Just to balance out the thread....
Here's one that took a few more rounds. Nate Tubbs gets down to business with Corrie.

Re: Corrie Sanders vs Johnny Du Plooy(1991)
Tubbs caught him and knocked him out. He had been 23-0 before that, mostly winning by KO. He came back less than three months later and won thirteen in a row until he lost to Rahman. He was beating Rahman up, but he quickly ran out of gas. Yet another time he was not in shape. Look at his soft belly. He said that his foot was hurt and he couldn't run or train properly for the Rahman fight, but he never liked to bother with training. He would rather play golf and go hunting and drink. The one exception was the Wlad fight. He trained very hard for that one. His final fight was a shame. I doubt if he did a single situp training for that one. The first punch to his belly finished him. He never fought again, and he was murdered four years later.
Re: Corrie Sanders vs Johnny Du Plooy(1991)
Lots of footage of Du Plooy recently .....thanks to Caractacus.....and it always leaves me wondering what Johnny might have done with a bit more discipline/dedication and if he had travelled abroad and worked in some other gyms and been managed differently as well?
Like Sanders, he had genuinely quick and heavy hands, and was not afraid to pull the trigger. But a typical Du Plooy fight against good opposition sees him start fast and confidently, catching the other guy flush and hard, only to suddenly start blowing and leave himself wide open for some big, game-ending shots.
There's glimpses of real class there- even in fights he lost - but you kind of know that there is no Plan B if the early bombs don't work and that the defence will fall apart. He seems to have trained for 6 round fights despite being a guy who was a 12-round championhip class fighter. Can't help wondering what a hard taskmaster like the late George Francis could have done with JDP.

Exactly, bodyshot.
I recall an interview a few years back where Johnny Du Plooy basically said that in hindsight he wished that he had been more serious about training when he was boxing.
It's clear he was a natural puncher.
I think he liked a party.

Does anyone remember Johnny Du Plooy fighting live on American television,
like USA Boxing or ESPN?
I cant recall ever seeing any of his fights until some were posted on youtube some years back.
You would figure he would have been more popular with American fight fans
back in the 1980's,with his mullet, hairy chest and terrific tan
and of course exciting straight-ahead punching boxing ability.

South African fighters were almost entirely blacklisted in the US then, and even when they did show them they were sure to include a heavy dose of accompanying hate propaganda, as in the case of Knoetze, whose full name was "Kallie Knoetze former South African policeman who killed a black child" in the USSA media.

No doubt,if Johnny Du Plooy had been born in Denton,Texas
instead of South Africa he would have been a star here
like Tommy Morrison was back in the 1980's/1990's.

I see Il Duceberry has been reduced to exhuming all of his fake profiles in order to generate conversation on his redundant spam threads. The grim carnival of schizophrenic attention-seeking will continue to its inevitable end.
Regarding Johnny DuPlooy - yes, he did indeed get a big coming out fight, in the States, on American TV - where he got bashed up by Renaldo Snipes. He went back to South Africa and resumed feasting on a series of podgy, punched out US imports.

Caractacus - Watch the Du Plooy - Snipes fight if you haven't already, the one where the guy beneath you said Du Plooy got "bashed up by Snipes". Ha ha! In fact it was one of the most amazing heavyweight fights ever, outside of some of Andrew Golota's krazy kapers, and in fact there are quite a few similarities between them! I had never seen it before, but I just watched it on Youtube. Du Plooy was beating up Snipes all fight long, a totally one sided affair, up to and including the seventh round...and then...Du Plooy just walked back to his corner and quit - and, yep, Lou Duva was in his corner and screaming at him and trying to push him back into the ring. A perfect prequel to Golota - Tyson, and I never even knew about it!

Uhhh...either your memory is playing tricks on you, or you didn't see the fight, or you're deliberately being silly to score points in some personal battle you've got going on.Tuan_Jim wrote:I see Il Duceberry has been reduced to exhuming all of his fake profiles in order to generate conversation on his redundant spam threads. Du Plooy was the one doing almost all the bashing before he quit with seconds left in the 7th round.
His problem was stamina, as mentioned in the other thread, although to be fair, Snipes was also almost out of after a high paced fight.
It was a weird ending.

Re: Corrie Sanders vs Johnny Du Plooy(1991)
It was a very good win for the prospecting Sanders who had all but 10 or 11 pro fights at the time. And Johnny Du Plooy was no soft opponent to a put a prospect in the ring with. Another exciting scrap was Du Plooy vs Pierre Coetzer - a fight where both men exchanged knockdowns. It was on youtube a few years ago, but the last time I looked couldn't find it.

Re: Corrie Sanders vs Johnny Du Plooy(1991)
man,the Sanders vs Du Plooy fight sort of reminded me of one of those old Wild West gunfights.
They first sized each other up on main street and then lead the lead fly!
Du Plooy punching style was like that of a "Whopper Chopper"
while Sanders punches were like heat seeking missles.
Man,did they seem to screw Sanders out of a more promising boxing career
because of his land of origin most likely.

also interesting is the fact that Johnny Du Plooy became Corrie Sanders trainer later in Sanders career.
and did you know that Corrie Sanders had once sparred with Nikolay Valuev?

I did not know either of those. Did you know that Nicolai Valuev is now in the Russian parliament?

Re: Corrie Sanders vs Johnny Du Plooy(1991)
I've often wondered about some hypothetical match ups between south African heavys like Gerrie Coetzee vs Johnny Duplooy or Corrie Sanders vs Pierre Coetzer or Corrie Sanders vs Gerrie Coetzee. Frans Both vs the Knoetzee brothers, etc. Some of those fights would end quickly of course, but something tells me there'd be some action pact ones even if short.

South Afrikan heavies used to put on some damm good scraps, eh. Who's their best heavy now? Is it that big kid Ruan Visser? I hear he's another giant almost 6' 10".
