Klitschko vs Jennings question!

Post by PokerRob »

Is this a WBA mandatory defense for Klitschko now that Luis Ortiz is no longer ranked WBA#1 due to his PED issues, or a voluntary defense???

A voluntary defence
we will have an idea whathappend with WBA next week. Chagaev is "regular champion" but must make a defence ASAP.
It looks like it could be Lucas Browne.

It seems that that should be the logical call. However, according to their site, the #1 spot is devoid of a challenger at this point in time. So, I would assume that Jennings is not the mandatory.

No I believe it is a WBA defense. I think Jennings is the highest rated WBA boxer (apart from Chagaev). Also he is rated 6th and 4th by the IBF and WBO respectively. So technically Klitschko can be defending for any of his 3 titles.

its exactly this, and it also releases Jennings wbc mandatory position. Wladimir is quickening the route to Wilder. Wilder may now have a tougher potential mandatory in povetkin (than Jennings) if he beats perez In may

Jennings is the highest rated WBA boxer (ranked #2), but I dont think that neccessarily means it will be a mandatory defense for Klitschko.

And yes, the IBF and WBO will certainly want their sanctioning fees so will make sure he's ranked in their top 10 also... Saying that Pulev refused to pay the santioning fee's to the WBA and WBO!

pulev was ibf mandatory, so if he did win, the wba and wbo would have become vacant

From what I know, for champions that hold the WBO and IBF titles, no matter who they fight, the fighter has to be in the top 15 of their respective rankings.
WBA on the other hand say that he has to simply be "ranked" by their association. I'm not sure if that is correct though.
WBC I have no idea.

Jennings fits the criteria, so if he pays sanctioning fees for all 3 (WBA,WBO,IBF), then he fight for all 3 belts.

He could have also fought for the WBA and WBO if he had chosen to pay the sanctioning fee's though! For some reason he did not!

Side Topic:

Are sanctioning fees the same amount for every ranked fighter within the respective organization? Or are they determined by your position within the ranks?

Thats a good question, to which Im not sure...

However, I would guess that the sanctioning fee's are the same regardless of whether your ranked (WBC#1 or WBC#15 for exmple).

I would further guess that each sanctioning body charges different fee's (i.e. the WBC will probably charge the most as its arguably regarded the most prestigious)!

Lesser santioning bodies such as the IBO dont charge sanctioning fee's!

The sanctioning fees for the wbc, wba, ibf and wbo is 3%
The IBF also charges 2% for fighter pention program.
Being undisputed champion would be expensive

Rod Salka didnt get the chance to fight for the titles, not sure if he was ranked by the WBA in the Super Lightweight weight class though!

Yes 3% of the boxers purse.
So let's say Floyd made 32 million and holds the WBC and WBA championship
6% would equate to 1.92 million dollars. In other words a highway robbery.

Assuming Floyd actually pays the full amount.
When dealing with boxers who don't need the belts the alphabet orgs can accept whatever said boxer is willing to pay or they can get nothing.
Floyd already gave the WBA nothing once(Mosley fight), they're probably happy to take whatever he's willing to give them now.

I thought WBA "super" champions didn't have WBA mandatory opponents?
As long as the champ makes his belt available anybody they fight counts as a defense?

If you are correct that means Klitschko only HAS to defend against the WBO and IBF ranked #1, the rest would be voluntarys which means he can pick anyone in the top 15, i.e. Shannon Briggs!

Chagaev must make a defense soon.As soon as he faces a top 10 opponent he will no
longer hold that crappy belt.
