Kessler calls it quits?

Post by Grant »

Looks like Mikkel has pulled the pin on his great career. I follow him on twitter and he has just thanked everybody for their support over the years.
Always been a gentleman i think and can leave with his head held high.
What do others think? HOF Material?

The 2nd froch fight was good but obviously took a lot out of him.

Would have liked to to do a job on Abraham before he quit though

Yes, according to the latest on the Web he has called it quits. Kessler's a top bloke and he was one of the best fighters in a lively division. Best of luck to him in his retirement. HOF material? In my opinion definitely. He was at the top long enough and was in some cracking fights, of which he won his fair share. It's possible he may be remembered too much for his losses, even though he hardly ever lost, but who cares at the end of the day. The pundits will call it the way they see it.

Finally, let's not forget that he finished one all with Carl Froch and he gave Carl a really tough time in the rematch, same as Carl did to him first time round.

Good guy and top fighter...think his Dad was a Brit as well?

Gave it a proper whirl against Calzaghe and earned Joe's respect....shared a couple of great fights with Froch and ended Beyer's rather annoying-protected time at the top as well. And I like anyone who beats Mundine!

Really good fighter and person. As much as I like him as a fighter, I'm glad to see him moving on. He has looks and charisma and can parlay that into good paychecks in a much safer manner now.

Always good to see boxers call it quits on their own terms instead of hanging to the point of being just a name opponent absorbing beatings from youngsters.

If his opponent was game for it his fights were entertaining and he fought the best in his weight class. He lost his biggest fights but there is no shame in that, he won some big fights too. Like any other boxer he got opponents to come to him if possible but Mikkel was willing to go anywhere to make a fight.

46-3, two time world title holder(three if you count WBA secondary belts), unified titlist fora time(WBA/WBC) and fought almost all of the notable boxers in his division.

His best work imo:
Carl Froch UD 12- best opponent defeated and picks up a belt in a great fight

Markus Beyer KO3- unifies two titles

Anthony Mundine UD12- goes to Australia to defend his belt and dominates Mundine

Eric Lucas TKO 10- dominates a former title holder

Librado Andrade- dominates the previously unbeaten challenger to set up the biggest fight of his career

Excellent, very respectable career, probably not getting into the hall of fame imo.

Good call for him, a lot of injuries over the last few years, no point ploughing on when you're no longer A1. He looked a little diminished in the 2nd Froch fight.

Gave Calzaghe a real tough night, hardest of his career.

Kessler was 1 hell of a fighter, but the time is right, he's about 8 years past his prime.
