The George Groves Equation

Post by freddydoesdallas »

I've been away for a bit so only just catching up on a few bits of news but the more i hear from Groves, the more im puzzled by the lad.

This little spat with Hearn and his statement about selling out stadiums and arenas just don't add up to me. I might be wrong but isn't he a fighter who is a former European champion that struggled to sell tickets, has been stopped twice at world level whilst the 'B' side and never actually been the main attraction for any event?

It might just be me but at the minute he's just another fighter who is a good addition to a card but i wouldn't go specifically to watch him.

The Froch fights boosted his profile massively however I think that he hasnt looked good since those fights and dare I say it has the look of a shot fighter.

I do think he needs a break away from things for a little bit which he is getting by having to wait for his world title shot against Anthony Dirrell.

George is trying to follow the Hayemaker route from his upbringing I.e. Being in control of his own destiny. He doesn't like Hearn hence him signing with Suaerland and retaining a degree of creative control over his career. He is in a peculiar position though with this WBC business..I would have thought that being with Sauerland the obvious target would be a faded Abraham for the WBO but it doesn't even seem to be an option.

In regards to his market value in relation to Degale this is quite tricky....there both sky fighters so no ace there for Hearn but James is inline for a vacant title so he's getting 50% no matter what. Unless sauerland make Dirrel a major offer he will have to go to the US for relative peanuts so advantage Hearn there. Groves' profile has been massively hosted following the Froch fights whereas :
Degale long since his forgotten Olympic triumph is still pretty much unknown so advantage Groves here

I used to think Groves only talked sh!t in the build-up to the Froch fights in order to promote them & was 'playing a role'; unfortunately it seems like he was displaying his actual personality & he really is full of sh!t anyway.

I understand where Groves is coming from a little bit.
George is the foil for these guys, whilst he may not be able to do Wembley on his own, he knows there is not a chance it gets done without him involved, so fair play to him for standing his ground.

Froch vs. Groves did Wembley.
DeGale vs. Groves could do Wembley.
Froch vs. DeGale wouldn't do Wembley.

Groves is a wind-up merchant and a love him or hate him fighter. People watch to see him win or get ko'd.
Froch is boring as hell.
DeGale is a prick but not a sellable prick. He honestly makes me want to turn my telly off when I hear him speak.

As for their previous fights Douglin was riding a 3-fight streak whereas Perriban was coming off 2 losses and a draw.

Wow...I see you share a drug dealer with George Groves :o

Let's just take a look at that again eh...

Froch vs Groves 1 wasn't a wembley fight. Let's see Froch and Degale have a FOTY with a controversial ending and then see if its a wembley fight.

Degale vs Groves could do Wembley...hurray you got one right.

Froch isnt going to fight either so in summary neither Degale or Groves get to fight at Wembley without each other.

You must be trolling with the recent form comments but I'll bite anyway so just for the record Douglins 3 fight streak came against 3 journeymen with 39 losses between them, Peribans 2 losses and draw came against 2 unbeaten fighters and staple SMW hardnut Bika. I don't even rate Periban a particularly good win but there is no comparison to Douglin, nil, none, nada.

Of course I'm forgetting the murderers row Groves fought before froch to earn his shot...oh hang on...

Agreed. I used to think he was smart but he seems completely deluded these days. It gets to him so much that a fighter of lesser natural ability has beaten him twice. The fact that he wont accept a 50/50 split even though it's IBF rules is crazy.

On the other hand, I'm very surprised that so many still think Degale is a prick based on the build up to a fight 4 years ago. In the last dozen or so interviews I've seen with Degale he seems a genuine, laid back character. People can't seem to understand that it was a simple case of Groves winding him up, just as he did with Froch.

Groves did turn Froch's lights out in the first round of the first fight and gave him a proper pasting for several rounds.

He may have done that big lennox but he still ended up losing the fight. There are times when lesser fighters have a bit of success in a fight against a better opponent but the better fighter usually wins. Froch wasn't punch perfect but he still won twice via stoppage.

I agree about degale too, he seems like someone who was trying to play a brash character early on but it didn't suit him and he paid for it. He's came back well. Groves has done the opposite though. He was likeable but now he's gone the other way. I couldn't watch him in interviews for froch 2

Neither Groves or DeGale 'do Wembley' without Froch.

I suspect even with Froch they don't do Wembley again. It was a one off for them. The stars aligned, the controversy of the first fight caught the publics imagination etc

Groves has looked average at best since Froch switched him off. He's always sparred hard according to reports.

So the amount of Twitter followers outweighs official IBF rules? :salut:

How does that actually translate to revenue generation? The froch fight would've seen people start to follow him. Do people tend to stop following?

Twitter is absolutely perfect for a passing interest in a man of the minute not an actual fanbase

That generally is true, although Groves Froch II was very even until the end. I think Groves has the higher profile than Degale because he got the win (just) the first time round and the national interest in his fights with Froch.

That being said, the two of them (Groves and Degale) together, because of their dislike for each other and their history would be what sells the reamtch so the split of 50/50 is probably fair. Also 50/50 of a lot of money is still a lot of money.

Groves does have an inflated opinion of himself.

Saying that he is fun to listen to and watch. Characters in boxing is part of the game.

And his first fight against Froch was very very exciting, all the way up to the shite stoppage by the Muppet ref.

What has Twitter got to do with Boxing splits? Twitter is for cun¥s who feel the need to sprout self important nonsense in front of an audience.

How many followers a fighter has on social media has zero relation to how many fans would actually pay cash and make the effort to see them live.

Hate the Twitter. I'm hating on it, not liking it. Our language is being corrupted by Twitter speak. Since when did a British guy use the words "You are just hating on Mayweather....."

It's a disgrace and I aint gonna stand for it.

Twitter is a good look at how the fighter is viewed by the general public.

Groves is the key ingredient in making Wembley happen.
Froch/Groves. DeGale/Groves. Yes
Froch/DeGale. No.

Froch and DeGale are bland personalities. Boring to listen to. They don't get the average joe in the street interested.
Throw Groves into the mix and he brings something out in his opponent. He makes the event interesting to the masses.

Love him or hate him, Groves makes you want to see his fights.
In my opinion...

You've every right to your opinion and i'm guessing you are a fan of him but i have to disagree with your last line. I didn't watch his last fight as it was on PPV and he wasn't an attraction for my cash and I can't remember watching his comeback fight either. If he went in with a top opponent, I'd be all over it. If he was on sky and i had no plans, i'd watch. If he was on the undercard to a good fight, i'd watch it. Groves himself against A N Other doesn't generate a buzz for me.

Far from the truth. Would much rather listen to Degale than George's delusions. Some of Degale's interviews with Kugan are genuinely funny and a good watch.
