Boxing pubs - london

hey all,

I happened to stumble across 'The Ring' pub at southwark today (had to pop in for a pint on me lunch as ya do) and I thought it was great. It has so many old photo's on the wall of who have apparently fought there and although quite small had a really good feel to it, gloves hanging down and even the history of the pub itself actually holding bouts there.

I was going to write something about the pubs in London that have a history of boxing anyway at some stage, mainly for my own benefit if i'm honest, but it really got me interested in other pubs that could be out there.

So on that note, do any of the people on here know of any other pubs in London that I could visit that also have a bit of 'boxing history' attached. I have been to the Dundee near York hall which has a bit on the walls etc, but ideally places that the landlord has tales to tell etc, that been said..anything boxing related really is fine.

I don't mind travelling about for it, in fact I quite like the idea of it but ideally on the tube network so I can drink while I take some notes.

I'd say most pubs in the East End are "boxing pubs" but don't know any official ones.

If you do find out a few though and fancy someone tagging along with you for a few jars give me a shout.

The Tom Cribb on Panton street. I'm not sure how much of a boxing lineage it has but it is named after the famed 1800's bareknuckle fighter who once pitted his dog, Puss, against a monkey. Look up Jacko Macacco.

The Thomas A Becket down the Old Kent Road, London SE1 is a famous one, think its more of a bar/club these days but Ali, Frazier, SRL and of course Henry Cooper all trained in the upstairs gym.

Bermondsey Tube Station nearest or the Elephant and Castle.

The famous Henry Cooper pub down there too but think its closed now

The Ring (Southwark tube) used to be better before the refurb (years ago) - they used to show boxing all day and night and it was more of a pub. I still like it for a cheeky cpl of pints, but not as much as I used to.

You have the Lamb and Flag in Covent Garden too, that also staged bare knuckle bouts - so you could start in the Tom Cribb (Piccadilly tube) then walk up to the L&F - about a 10 minute walk.

The Tom Cribb is definitely more of an after the office kind of boozer. It's a small pub. But there are loads of bareknuckle boxing prints and write ups there. Worth having a look round.

I found a boxing pub / bar a couple of years or more ago. It was somewhere in the city and downstairs. I think it was only open selected hours. They showed boxing on a loop and there were boxing magazines there and memorabilia.... I just can't remember the name off hand, it was something like 'Boxing Bar' or something. It was very random. I am not sure it would still be there. I will try and research on Google.

Can't remember what fight it was but spent ages trying to ring/send messages on facebook to find out if they were showing it and they never bothered to reply so in the end just found somewhere local that had it instead. Would like to go there but they don't seem that proactive about saying when they are open and advertising what they are showing. Surely for a start you'd be posting on boards like this if you are a specific boxing pub open and showing some of the big shows that people will struggle to otherwise see.

If you want to see a piece of boxing history, then Bar Italia in Soho has an old black crumbling pair of Rocky Marciano's gloves framed above the till. Worth a gawp.

it closed a good while ago, not long after i discovered it existed - which was a shame as it was 5 mins from my office - never bloody went there!

The Coningham Arms would put the fights on if you asked when I lived in Shepherds Bush as a student. More of a Horse racing pub but has more TV screens than customers usually.
