Bowe vs Hide - If Hide had a chin ??
Bowe vs Hide - If Hide had a chin ??
Just watching this fight - Firstly what a really good fight, and a weird fight too..
Hide boxed brilliantly and was landing cleanly and outboxing Bowe for the first two and a half rounds. Until his chin gave out on him.
Question is ; if Hide had a chin would he have won? I say yes!

Re: Bowe vs Hide - If Hide had a chin ??
Quite possibly.
Hide was a phenomenally hard puncher for such a small HW.
Riddick Bowe claimed he'd never been hit harder, so that must tell you something.
Hide's chin certainly let him down, plus he looked like he fainted at one point, so that leads me to think his nerves must be a factor too.
Bowe, although he wasn't in his 1992 pomp, he was still a formidable character with a lot of heart and it's more than likely he would have still prevailed, but I don't say that with full confidence.

Re: Bowe vs Hide - If Hide had a chin ??
Hide's problems run far deeper than his glass chin. Having a solid chin doesn't mean you have the stomach for a fight. Hide fought Bowe and Klitschko in a condition of utter terror because he is a bully who can't take what he loves to dish out on overmatched, handpicked opponents and sparring partners.
Inject Hide's jawbone with the marrow of George Chuvalo's skull and he still loses to anyone world class - likely quitting on his stool, crying and quivering. In fact he broke out in tears on a recent BBC news interview, because he 'doesn't have a team of people to look after him anymore'. He's a 43 year old man. The news reporter looked flummoxed by his infantile behaviour. It's far too much of an over simplification to hang Hide's losses on his chin.

not that recent...he's been in stir since end of 2013Tuan_Jim wrote:Hide's problems run far deeper than his glass chin. Having a solid chin doesn't mean you have the stomach for a fight. Re: Bowe vs Hide - If Hide had a chin ??
Always deeply fascinated by this fight...despite admitting the fact that in only represents a small, largely unimportant/obscure footnote in the history of the heavyweight championship story.
Hide - just for a couple of rounds - gave us a cameo of why his often erratic, deeply difficult behaviour was worth tolerating. A supremely fast, agile/elusive and aggressive heavyweight going straight at a far bigger man. Great speed, reflexes and a desire to come out throwing shots had Bowe unsettled and it seemed to be working.
Bowe - the main man and still considered a great champion in the making - suddenly looks like just another heavyweight and the first signs that he can be rattled and is standing-still in terms of developing his talent are apparent. Another supposedly easy night becomes something of an ordeal.
Both men are at a crossover point. Hide realising that his hard-hitting and speed are not enough and then suddenly/disappointingly fronting up to Bowe and letting him back into the fight...and Bowe getting a bitter, unexpected taster of what it is to come; namely that he can be hit and he's no longer improving.

A better Chin just gives Bowe a chance to continue to warm up, sharpen up, get into the proper rhythym, and beat on Hide into the later rounds, and still eventually put him down.

Hide was a blast to watch. You knew you were going to see a ko one way or the other.
Bowe was just in another league.Better chin or not Bowe wins this.

Re: Bowe vs Hide - If Hide had a chin ??
This is probably the most accurate summary of Hide. He certainly had the ability to beat Bowe in my opinion and based on the first few rounds I would say he could have won. The mental aspect is the major factor here. Watching again it seems clear that Hide seemed to deteriorate when Bowe started pressing harder. It was weird how he would go from the 'mighty defeated' to bouncing up almost comically and then attacking Bowe and looking blinding. Then capitulating. He was down something like 6 times. He became fearful and anxious and this drained him of his energy and his legs.Tuan_Jim wrote:Hide's problems run far deeper than his glass chin. So I agree it wasn't solely his chin. He was a strange character Hide. I met him in Vegas and he was odd to say the least.
Re: Bowe vs Hide - If Hide had a chin ??
I really enjoyed Herbie when he was on, but even if he'd sustained his early form throughout, it's hard not to see Bowe using his size and weight to slow him down, and take him into deep water later. To win, Herbie needs to be able to exploit his speed and power to really threaten the KO, and the evidence of Bowe's career is that he had a hell of a chin. I agree a Bowe win is virtually inevitable unless he responds to Hide's elusiveness by falling asleep.
Re: Bowe vs Hide - If Hide had a chin ??
Interesting that you say that as there seemed to be a sudden change of events after Hide butted Bowe and riled him. So ironically Hide's illegal tactic served no purpose other than to wake the giant ! Bowe was really a good fighter - what could and should have been.SamWise72 wrote:I really enjoyed Herbie when he was on, but even if he'd sustained his early form throughout, it's hard not to see Bowe using his size and weight to slow him down, and take him into deep water later. Yeah, without the butt, maybe it's a Herbie win. That sure changes the map of the world, eh?

This. Classic school bully, and frankly, not the full shilling.Tuan_Jim wrote:Hide's problems run far deeper than his glass chin. Having a solid chin doesn't mean you have the stomach for a fight. Maybe we should have a thread paying homage to guys who could not last more than 6 rounds. We could start with Hide and Vitaly Kltischko.

He lasted 6 rounds against an obese Lennox Lewis and somehow people are impressed with that. If you check out the Passing the Torch Thread you will see that. People have made other comments praising Klitschko's performance as well.
Hide gets bounced up and down like a ping pong ball and some people are impressed with that. (Numerous other times other people have actually criticized Bowe for his performance in this fight.)
Just don't get it.

Aha, so to gain entry to the "can't go past the 6th" club you just need to have been stopped in the sixth once. No matter if you may have gone 12 rounds many times in other fights. Got it.

I disagree, Hide came to win and went down fighting. Unlike for example Haye, who simply coasted to a points defeat against Klitshcko.Ambling Alp II wrote:He lasted 6 rounds against an obese Lennox Lewis and somehow people are impressed with that. Re: Bowe vs Hide - If Hide had a chin ??
You can give him some credit for not quitting. If you want to argue that his performance was not as horrible as Haye, fine. My point is that he pretty much got dominated. He should not get too much credit for this fight.
Just find it odd that the guy who gets stopped well short of the finish (Hide and in another case Vitaly Klitschko) somehow get credit, while the winners get no credit and occasionally even get ripped.
