who invented Pound 4 Pound?

Post by Monte Fisto »

Just wondering, has this term been around since the start of boxing, or a recent promoters invention?
Also, who was first fighter you remember buying into as the P4P king??

For me it was RJJ

Since its invention by well-meaning admirers of the likes of Benny Leonard and Sugar Ray Robinson in order to point up the greatness of those worthies, the concept of “Pound-for-Pound” has gradually replaced critical thinking amongst large swathes of the boxing public. Humanity being what it is, even back in the mythical Good Old Days it was necessary to qualify statements like “Ray Robinson is the best fighter in the world”, as idiots had a tendency to respond with things like: “Hurr, durr, but Primo Carnera weighs twice as much as he does! He couldn't beat Carnera in a fight!"

No-one. I probably read about it first in my uncle's Septic boxing mags in the early 90s. I hope, upon discovering the concept, that I thought "What a stupid fuckin' idea".

i don't know but when Brussels started saying you couldn't buy a quarter of sweets any more or half a pound of bananas, I notice that boxing got left alone.
