New Best Team in Boxing?

Post by BAD INTENTIONS »

How about that NBC crew? These are some big names in US sports commentating.

Marv Albert
Sugar Ray Leonard (I would have preferred Tyson)
Al Michaels (Host)

Will they have a third commentator?

I'd have preferred Mike myself, but I think he's a lil too "erratic" I think for live national TV. Maybe throw Mike on the post-fight coverage that's supposed to be shown on NBC Sports. Can get away with a few f#cks being said & uncomfortable silences due to things Mike says over there I bet.

I'm not the biggest Sugar Ray fan as a commentator, but him saying "unbelievable" back in the day is still etched into my memories.

Sean O'Grady's nutsack > Jim Lampley

To me Jim is like a retarded person with a great voice & a TV weatherman who's got his eye on a anchorman job look.

Who don't dig Sean O'Grady? He's the man.

Not enough people speak Toneyese so they'd have to increase the budget to throw in subtitles.

but o'grady would be more like the expert analyst, lampley like a play by play guy.
when covering a sports event, they usually have an ex-jock to break the game down and
a play by play guy and a color commentator to add some opinion and yell and keep things
moving.
al michaels has always been one of my favorite play by play guys, be it boxing or baseball
or football. his call of hagler-hearns is as much a part of my memories of the fight as the
fight itself. boxing has so many idiots with mics who nobody really knows how they got
jobs covering boxing. they really aren't good at covering sports and have no boxing
background whatsoever. i would put alex wallau, al bernstein, and max kellerman in
that category.
albert is a color man who can do some play by play by usually just yells catch phrases
and throws out a few observations during breaks. larry merchant i think was just kept around
in that role for nostalgia and also because his drunken ramblings were sometimes a diversion,
but harold lederman, steve bunce, pat o'brien, and chris berman ok at it.
the expert commentator who breaks down the fights has lots of great options. gill clancy was
great, o'grady was good, george foreman, lennox lewis, and roy jones are ok but jones overuses that
"dog fight" analogy. atlas is kind of an attention whore and i know something is wrong when
i look at my scorecard and it looks anything like jim watt's, and i have to turn off the sound
entirely when that guy is talking. i probably trusted manny steward the most in that role.

Al Michaels was on Adam Carolla's podcast the other day. Talked briefly about the PBC national TV deal. Must say he didn't seem all that hyped about it & sorta seemed meh about it from what I could gather listening.
