SMW tournament

Post by ikorolev »

http://www.BS.com/chavez-hits- ... ard--87287?

With Chavez being in legal limbo plus HBO vs Showtime/NBC issue, likeliness of this tournament is low, but if Chavez manages to fight Froch on Showtime with Golovkin and Hopkins fighting on HBO, then both issues are going away if/when Chavez loses to Froch. Whoever wins in the other pair, can fight Froch.

So, who would win that tournament ?

A super middleweight tourney without Ward?

No need to include him I guess since the winner would then be too obvious.

Amirite? Amirite?

I would pick Gennady at this point, his prime is now and he is a great fighter regardless what the doubters think.. Hopkins of 2001-2002 vs Gennady of today would be a classic

Its obvious. If its a tournament with GGG, God, Chuck Norris, & a damn T-Rex, it would still be GGG, clearly.

I'd say Hopkins or Froch. Jr. gets outboxed by both and GGG's power not as big an issue at 168 and gets out classed as well.

so GGG's power is not as big an issue, meaning he can't drop froch like groves did, and that
means froch is going to outbox GGG... lol...

Junior is too big for any of these guys, Hopkins excepted.
If he's in shape, he smokes them all out (No pun intended).

Ward needs to be included, though, since he's acknowledged as the world's best 168-pounder.

Junior wasn't too big for Martinez or Vera. Why would he be for Froch or Golovkin ? See poll results. NOBODY picked Chavez to win.

i personly think froch.

i am not so 100 % sure how ggg would look like as a sm boxer, if he could bring the world class power he has at midd. too sm.

hopkins easily handles chavez jr, as anybody else do

froch simply to much for old hopkins, the hopkins of the pavlik days might have been another story, but even than froch realy is tough

golovkin also overpowers X

froch vs golovkin, thats a big one. this is great boxing, oh hopefuly they make this one day.

froch absorbes g punches, froch size brings problems to g. his overall combination punches and strong build would be to much for g.

Are you guys not reading Carl's interviews ? He said that Golovkin is too dangerous to fight. Froch wants his last (and relatively easy) fight before retirement. His sheer guts and desire are not as strong as they were.

Sure, where is that video ? Here is a quote:

“Just swerve Golovkin like the plague. He punches like a mule. I don’t need to be in with him. Dangerous fight.”

And here is a Hearn interview on the same subject:

http://www.boxingnewsonline.net/eddie-h ... -golovkin/
"Froch v Groves Facebook Q&A - Part Two"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hV1jSJpDLZI

Apparently, HBO televised a version of the same interview during the Golovkin-Geale fight, which takes Carl's remarks out-of-context (at the 9:45 mark):

“Just swerve Golovkin like the plague. He punches like a mule. You don’t need to be in with him. Dangerous fellow!”

They conveniently excluded the fact that Froch laughed in a sarcastic manner immediately afterwards and he also said that Golovkin wasn’t big enough to make the jump to super-middleweight.

This was clearly a tongue-in-cheek comment, but the media, as well a several forum posters, jumped on this quote to suggest that a fighter like Carl Froch is "scared" of GGG!
Here's Froch's clarifying his misconstrued comments in boxing news:

"It was tongue in cheek back then. I was being a bit cheeky and you can take those comments with a pinch of salt. What I will say though is this guy can f*cking punch: he's dangerous and if he can be avoided we'll avoid him. "

You may be right about that particular statement intended to be sarcastic. Possibly, it was even prepared.

However, Carl's actions support at least his total lack of desire to fight GGG. Froch arranged voting in his facebook page asking fans to pick his next opponent between DeGale, Chavez and Golovkin, and when Golovkin won, he silently ignored the results. I suspect that Hearn who has a high opinion of Golovkin, persuades Carl to avoid GGG.

Talks about Golovkin being too small for SMW are laughable. Fighters move up in weight all the time. Golovkin became visibly more muscular in the last few years, and he will be naturally outgrowing 160 in a couple years.

Have you got the URL? I read this quote on another forum, but never seen the original article.
No, it was in the paper edition of boxing news. Some posted a pic in this thread at the scene, seems expired:

Martinez pretty much ran the entire night before caving in to the size and pressure of Chavez.Fortunately for him, time ran out before he did.
And Vera? I seem to remember Junior coming up with 2 wins over the guy.
size mattered.

Junior is a cruiserweight in the body of a super middle. He would wear down Froch (a lucky winner over ancient Glenn Johnson and the very ordinary Groves) and then toy with munchkin Golovkin at 168. You know, GGG. The middleweight legend who has fought absolutely nobody.
And my hat's off to this NOBODY guy since he apparently was the only one smart enough to select Junior as the likely the winner of this fantasy tourney.

Vera definitely beat Chavez in their first fight.

Golovkin's opposition is much better than Junior's. The only time Junior fought somebody outstanding, he lost. If he rehydrates to 190, it only means that he carries unnecessary fat. All 3 will beat him with different levels of ease, but he doesn't pose any real challenge to fighters of that level. No wonder that everybody is eager to fight him: low risk, high reward.
