Malta Boxing Scotland?
Ive heard through the grape vine that the contoversial Malta Boxing Association will be taking over & be based in Scotland,im just curious to what the current situation is with the BBBofC and what it means for Scottish boxing,if Fights are matched correctly and all the safety procautions are met such as expierance, weight, bla bla then it can only move it in the upwards direction, hopefully somebody has some better information
Re: Malta Boxing Scotland?
Scotland still falls under the board's jurisdiction, unfortunately nothing to stop Malta moving in, but unless something major is going on, it will be in an attempt to compete against the board, just have to hope it fails miserably.

Re: Malta Boxing Scotland?
They were going to put Danny Williams and Francois Botha in with each other, don't think I could sum them up any better than that.DanielGraham73 wrote:Theres enough of the shows happening throughout England, ive never been to 1 so couldnt comment on how its ran etc would like to hear more on what there about

Sure Ian weaver former Team Gb boxer went for his Bbbofc medical and was denied it for a issue & went with malta boxing i think, could be wrong though
Re: Malta Boxing Scotland?
Not the only one refused a license by the board to go with them. BBBofC aren't perfect, but I don't think having more than one sanctioning body is a good route to go down, things need to change with the board, but I think that's best done within the current system.DanielGraham73 wrote:![]()

Re: Malta Boxing Scotland?
Noticed a few Brit guys fighting on Maltese cards over the last while. I'm sure Peter McDonagh is on one soon and Scott Dixon (blast from the past) was fighting on them also. I think he had to move there after all the carry on he had to deal with.

How do you know ? - even if this is correct is it fair to criticize a sanctioning body for something they may have considered doing but did not ?
You are aware that both Williams and Botha continue to box around the world under various sanctioning bodies - it is a sad fact that fighting each other would probably pose a lesser threat to their long term health than some of the opponents they have faced.
The BBBofC are an antiquated gentlemens club that needs shaking up - they will not do this proactively of their own accord (why would they?) but they may be forced to change with the advent of alternatives.
Re: Malta Boxing Scotland?
It was listed on here and Luca Di Caro, who's behind a lot of this Malta stuff, asked for it to be added to the schedule, was supposed to be 30th January at the York Hall.bripez wrote:"were" they ?expe wrote: They were going to put Danny Williams and Francois Botha in with each other, don't think I could sum them up any better than that.

Expe have you any idea why it didnt take place or was it just a publicity stunt ?
Re: Malta Boxing Scotland?
I can't remember exactly why and the thread asking for it to be added to the schedule has been deleted, someone did ask for it to be moved to a show in Equatorial Guinea, there was a bit of confusion about that and the rest I can't remember.spudder56 wrote:expe wrote:It was listed on here and Luca Di Caro, who's behind a lot of this Malta stuff, asked for it to be added to the schedule, was supposed to be 30th January at the York Hall.bripez wrote:

Re: Malta Boxing Scotland?
I am sorry but how can a so called governing body be respected when they sanction something like that. I agree that the BBBoC is a bit antiquated but there is no way they would accept that fight!

100% correct mate
Re: Malta Boxing Scotland?
we dont need them, we have a healthy circuit of shows over the next few months.
Daniel were did you hear this ? Who was saying that they will take over ? what scottish based boxers are going to be signing with a Malta based promotor? Your being very vague and need more details ...
Now if you look on the Malta website it does have a scottish boxers father down as representive, but as far as i know (and i could be wrong) he has no formal boxing background other than his laddie being a fighter and he is more involved with Kick Boxing .

'Malta Boxing Scotland' sounds like words that shouldn't go together. A bit like Women's Rights.
These suntanned parasites are bad for boxing and the Board of Control should exterminate them, starting with Rio De Janeiro De Carlo. My name is Brian Moore.

Re: Malta Boxing Scotland?
Under EU laws, the Maltese Boxing Commission can sanction fights anywhere it wants, but that does not mean promoters will be willing to work with them.
The BBBofC is a limited company by guarantee, which effectively gives it the same status as a charity. Unlike a regular limited company, it is a non-profit organisation with its liabilities being guaranteed by its members (ergo, licence holders). It is not a statutory body so it cannot prevent any other type of boxing.
To my knowledge, there are no statutory bodies in UK sport. Even the big boys like the Football League and the FA are self-appointed.
The BBBofC often describes itself as the regulatory body for professional boxing in the UK, but that claim is at best misleading and at worst completely false as the government does not recognise them as a regulatory body. Boxing in the UK is actually unregulated.
What the board can do, though, is decide who its members are and have suitable rules in place for them. Because of its size and longevity, boxers need to be with the board if they wish to get the best opportunities, fight on Sky etc. The board is able to revoke licences (which in reality are memberships) if it wishes, and one way it does this is by striking off those that box for organisations it does not approve of (ie Malta, Luxembourg, GBA and even IBA, EBF etc).
While I agree that these rival organisations have a right to exist and the board has many issues, including delusions of grandeur when it comes to its real legal status, I feel we need a strong board because too many organisations makes things messy and confusing for fans.
The issue with Malta etc is also the quality of their shows. They aren't much above what you'd see on the so-called unlicensed circuit (there's actually no such thing as unlicensed boxing as the term merely means not licensed by the BBBofC). Many of the boxers on their shows are people who have been turned away from the board for medical reasons or are simply not skilled enough to get a board licence.

I know the only promoter so far in Scotland, and I believe boxers/ kick boxers will be interested as they are allowed to do both codes much like the majority of sanctioning bodies in EuropeAlba wrote:we dont need them, we have a healthy circuit of shows over the next few months.

I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to do it some fighters simply can't get fights so this may be another option for them

Football (The FA) is a government appointed regulator btw although i dont know if thats the case with any other sports.
Ie just spoken to someone this morning, from scotland (Edinburgh i believe) and usually promotes unlicensed shows, who said before i had even seen this post that they have just been approved for a Malta promoters license.

Re: Malta Boxing Scotland?
It's not a statutory body. It does not have complete remit over football in England. For example, the Financial Conduct Authority places restrictions on who can and can't give financial advice, but the FA can't stop you playing five-a-side with your mates. That's the difference. The FA does not even control the Football League.Looking On wrote:Wake up call wrote:Under EU laws, the Maltese Boxing Commission can sanction fights anywhere it wants, but that does not mean promoters will be willing to work with them.

Sport England and UK Sport are the only two governmental sports bodies.
The government recognise the FA, but they do not appoint it. The government recognises the BBBofC, but does not appoint it. If you want to set up a new football association and meet the necessary legal requirements, there is nothing the FA could do to stop you.
The FA, like the board, is a professional association, not a governmental regulator. There is a huge difference.
Re: Malta Boxing Scotland?
I know whos running it but it's down to the people involved to come out and say who they are. I like the idea. A lot of boxers in Scotland are treated badly in my eyes. This might be a way of pushing boxing forward. Got to agree with Billy this may help fighters fight both codes so they can make a living properly. We will see where it goes. Hard road ahead of them

There's a bit of it around Leeds/West Yorkshire now, too. Lee Murtagh is involved.
Re: Malta Boxing Scotland?
The Government (via the Department of Culture, Media and Sport) as well as UK Sport officially recognise two bodies for boxing: the British Boxing Board of Control and the Amateur Boxing Association.
The board have the same government recognition as the FA for football, the RFU for rugby and the LTA for tennis.

Scottish boxing needs something big to happen to it again, wasnt long ago Ricky Burns was selling out arenas & with Limond boxing down south for his defence and lads like simmons & brophy now promoted by MGM it doesnt look to good for the big shows up here, few potential british champions this year though Butcher, simmons etc it should/could get the TV Sky shows
