New Australian heavyweight champ.

Post by tsmithy50 »

Ben Edwards beat Hunter Sam in Canberra tonight to become Aussie heavyweight champ, surprised this has gone largely unrecognised.

Of far more importance than this Rexob yob, is this article about Ben before the fight and the reason for his return:

http://www.smh.com.au/sport/boxing/canb ... 3og0l.html

As Ben has flittered in and out of the game in recent years, will be interesting to see if he can garner some more fights on the heavyweight scene.

I like Ben. Who should be next?
now that he is committed and still only 31 he should be looking at up to 4 fights in the next 12 months.
can anyone suggest 4 opponents, realistic ones?

He is a dangerous fight for anybody. So unless someone particularly fancies a crack at the national title they will probably avoid him.

Exactly plenty of sweat and hard work to get this far [winning national tittle ] surely some respect deserved for both young men I reckon. :TU: :TU:

I wish Ben all the best, and hope he wins some money for his family and creates more interest in heavyweight boxing in Australia, but he is wide of the mark when it comes to Sonny Bill.

His last opponent, Chauncy Welliver, is better than anyone Edwards has faced in the ring and Botha wasn't retired for five years when he faced SBW - he had fought Pianeta, Takam and Michael Grant in the 14 months beforehand: all much better fighters than Edwards.

I would put the house on SBW beating Edwards at this point in time.

The Chauncy Welliver SBW beat was pathetic. Edwards would have left him looking like Browne did.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Edwards fought Welliver, he seems to be taking a liking to the Aussie dollar.

Big Ben could do to SBW what he did to Hoppa.

Alas SBW wont be back in the ring until after the Rugby World Cup when another suitable stiff will be sought and subsequently sacrificed.

Don't play coy Franny.
You know as well as I do that Edwards is a kick boxer who has dabbled in boxing over the past 7yrs.
Showed some good skills outpointing Hunter Sam over 10rds to win the Aus HW title recently.
Sam proved tobe tough with a good set of whiskers.
Hopefully Ben will stick with boxing and give it his best shot.
Can't imagine SBW wanting to lock horns with Edwards during his next footballing holiday.

Had a look at one of his fights :oo very below average to be fair, it must be infuriating as an Australian boxing fan, watching and paying for this amateurish level of boxing.

Fair enough matey.

How far do you think someone like Big Benny Edwards can go in boxing over the next 2,3,4 yrs or so ?

We'd be getting into crystal ball territory there Franny.
Hypotheticals usually aren't too accurate.
Ask me again in three years when Ben has had another dozen fights. :TU:

Would Big Benny Edwards be better than a heavyweight such as Shane Cameron ? Just trying to get a picture of how good he is.
