Solis looked completely awful.

Without seeing him before, I wouldn't believe this piece of fat was someone who could become no2 just after Wlad.

I couldn't see any talent today, neither speed... actually when I turned in on the fight was already in progress, and for quite some time I thought this to be some slo-mo replay. At least Thompson is 40+ and was always quite slow for a top guy.

don't ever tell me Boxrec or IBO ratings are better than IWBR www.independentworldboxingrankings.com before this fight they had SOLIS AT 9 AND TT at 26 despite the fact that that TT beat SOLIS less than a year ago.

try and understand how IWBR works.

Be honest and tell the truth.

Good point. I was never great in math but I know if someone beat someone they should be ranked higher. And it's not like Solis beat anyone else of note in the last couple of years.

I didn't notice before the fight that Solis was ranked #9 and TT was ranked #26, but if I had noticed that it would have pissed me off. :witzend: Let's see the revised rankings...

I just glanced at the boxrec rules and it would be interesting to see how the ranks were affected after the 1st fight. Particularly, I wonder what exactly is meant by 11. (...) The clear decision factor is in proportion to rounds boxed and the mean score difference per judge... the first fight was won by Thompson, but since he won by 1 point and 2 points on one scorecard and lost by FOUR on the last one I just wonder if it it worked the proper way. Though current ranking could be just because Thompson lost to Tacam in the meantime, and Solis was "only" inactive (that is not to defend boxrec ratings in any way).

IWBR also has the totally shot Juan Manuel Lopez, who was stopped within four rounds in three of his last four bouts, ranked multiple spots above Lomachenko.

Don't ever tell me that Lenny's rankings are better than BoxRec's

Lopez has retired so not in the next set of rankings, but it is on what you do, 11 months ago he beat the an opponent ranked 6. Lomachenko is probably the best but he is beating fighters ranked 26 and 41. IWBR is about results.

If Solis was allowed to eat pizza & chips in between rounds, he'd still be undefeated!

How this fat slob was ever seen a a top fighter, and not too long ago either, is a question that will be asked long after mankind is extinct & Solis himself is still stuffing his gob with pizza & chips! :witzend:

You're about results yet rank JML as such when he's been badly stopped in three of his last four and failed to make it past the fourth in each of those losses, won only a single fight in roughly 2.5 years, and scored his only win over a guy who was stopped two fights before and in his next bout, after which he retired; some results those are. Within the same period Lomachenko lost a close split decision to a top fighter who knocked out Lopez twice, won a clear decision over an unbeaten contender in Russell, routed a former title challenger who was more competitive with Chris John, and handily beat a limited but tough Ramirez, who I think was arguably better than everyone JML's beaten since 2010 barring Ponce.

Regardless of your method, and I'm fairly sure BoxRec's rankings are based on results too, having the totally shot version of JML who was badly knocked out in three of his last four and has one win in about 2.5 years ahead of Lomachenko reflects poorly on your rankings in my opinion.

Not to mention that since the win over Ponce that I think he's getting too much credit for, JML was flattened in both of his fights and couldn't make it out of the third round either time.

Crusader, you make fair points about Lopez and largely I agree with you. It's more a case that Lomachenko should be ranked higher, than Lopez being wrong ranked at 17. The problem with Lomachenko is he just has not beaten good enough fighters yet, he has a brilliant record for one with just 4 fights but they are still against a #26 ranked fighter #40 ranked fighter and a #42 ranked fighter. His next fight is against a #29 ranked fighter. Subjectively he is probably number 1. All computer ratings or formulas will find it hard to place him high. Boxrec has him a few spots higher.

We have a major update on Wednesday where we list the last twenty fights.

Whether Loma is too low, JML is too high, or both, I think it's highly questionable to have the latter above the former. Overall the rankings seem fine but there are still infelicities that can be cherry-picked, perhaps as you've done with Thompson and Solis.

The Solis Thompson rating/method was fundamentally wrong. Thompson having beaten Solis, Solis having not fought and the huge gap.

Glazkov is another in IWBR rating who is a too high, he got his points against Adamak and a similar situation to the one you brought up.

All systems will have quirks caused by upsets but the upsets are real and in sport the interest is that the underdog can sometimes win. Our ratings are just what have happened on a linear basis since 1990. It probably does not need everyone to be exactly right, if 10 of us gave our top 10 current heavyweights they would all be different. I think the best combination is a subjective top 10 but the IWBR from 11-100.

The key for me is that if you beat someone you should be ranked above that person (obviously with a time frame). The tagging that exists in IWBR so that results affect pairs or groups is significant.

The rewarding of meaningless fights is very minor in the IWBR. Ali Raymi is number 73. He not only has never fought anyone in the top 100 but none of his opponents have ever beaten or even faced a top 100 opponent.

Tony Thompson is 4(3)-0-0 against 3 time amateur champion Solis and top amateur David Price. Solis had only lost to Wlad and Price hasn't lost as a pro to anyone. Pretty damn impressive for a guy like TT who had virtually no amateur background and is almost as old as I am. Solis' "conditioning" is a disgrace though.

Firstly, this is a poor and pathetic performance from both fighters in a country in which boxing is starting to take off. This sport won't if shows like this are promoted.

Anyway, Solis was in a disgraceful condition. I've spent a week in Miami for the England pre-world cup friendlies and it's as if, Solis has spent his whole preparation week with me, going from the Clevelander pub, to another pub, to the local Mexican and then to a club. Shocking.

As for Tony Thompson, time is catching up, you can tell. Not an impressive performance but let's face it, his opposition was SO BAD that he just had to stick to his game plan. He deserves another big fight in the UK to get a proper paycheque and retire on a high. Let's face it, he won't face Wlad again and if he did, he would lose pretty badly. A funny bloke though. Him & Kevin Johnson always make me chuckle.

Thompson should get a 'last chance saloon' fight against Wilder; if he wins he gets a title. If he loses, call it a career.

Man, Solis looked like a journeyman. Too heavy, too small, not busy enough, could slip some punches but in total he looked miles away from someone who won the gold medal the the Olympics. I am not surprised his promoter lost his nerves and trashed him after the fight, his reaction in the ring is priceless. He was absolutely furious. How could Solis think for a second that he would have a chance in the rematch if he would show up even more out of shape than the last time?
He made Thompson look really good, he moved better, stood tall, had the higher work rate, even though the latter doesn't mean that much. I know, put him in with a younger man like Tarkam and Thompson will not look good, but for 43 that was not a bad effort, I mean I am in my mid 30s and stairs are starting to get challenging!
Anyways, I don't see Solis regrouping, dropping weight and revive his career, this may have been the end.

I would mind. I like Thompson but come on, he's just too old and slow now. I hope he gets a good money fight for his last hurrah but a title fight is stretching it too far.

He's earned it. Beating Price and Solis twice in the last couple of years . . if Wilder is going to take an "easy defense" before fighting Fury or Klitschko (and I guarantee he would), Thompson should be the guy.

Once in awhile boxing produces a performance bordering on the bizarre and this was one of them, where on earth do I start.
Right off the bat Odlanier Solis looked to have put little effort in the conditioning department, first impressions were he's fat, out of shape and looks terrible so it didn't bode well for what was about to come and it didn't disappoint.
Once again the unmotivated Solis showed up right on cue and had no fire in his belly, fought without purpose or urgency the entire bout and just went through the motions, it was awful.
Tony Thompson probably came out of the opening rounds and thought that if the intensity level is this low then it's going to be an easy nights work and he would have guessed correctly.
It would be easy to completely destroy Odlanier Solis here but what's the point he's already done it to himself, the man clearly wants no part of boxing and hopefully hangs up his gloves.
The event itself was strange and I laughed out loud when the rounds were ending early, in some cases 10 seconds or more remained.
During the break between rounds 7 and 8 the music played in the arena sounded like a mix between the soundtrack to The X Files and the guy who played the flute for Marcos Maidana's Argentinian national anthem at the Mayweather 2 fight.
Throw in the blonde leggy ring card girl in the red outfit and I'd managed to entertain myself during this brutal excuse of a boxing match.
Finally it was over and one of Solis's corner men appeared to be reading him the riot act and rightfully so, Solis wasted everyone's time and any potential lofty expectations I had of him seem like a very long time ago now.
From time to time at sporting events you'll see fans put brown paper bags over their head shameful in their teams performance, in this case if you're a Solis fan double bag it.
