Greatest Heavyweight fights of the 80's , 90's and noughties

Post by evrenb »

The heavyweight scene of the 1970's was and is greatly revered for it's great fighters and great fights. The contenders mostly all fought one another.

However the 1980's , 1990's and 00's produced some tremendous fights : -

I put forward as great fights : -

Holyfield vs Dokes - 1980's
Morrison vs Ruddock - 1990's
Brewster vs Liakhovich - 2000's

Not saying these were the best but they were great fights : - What favourites do you guys have?

Would be very interested to hear. I will put a few more forward when I remember them .

The amount of upercuts Cooper ate in that fight made me cringe. He was a very tough dude, just a few notches below evender in terms of skill and athleticism.

Byrd/Tua -- impressive performance by Byrd

Tyson/Tillis -- Mike's toughest test before Douglas

Bowe/Tubbs -- competitive fight

Bowe/Gonzalez -- good lead-up and great performance by Riddick

Mercer/Witherspoon -- competitive fight, not sure if I agree w/decision

Tua/Izonritei -- Izon was game and made for a good fight

Damiani v Mercer was good as well....Damiani was a very tidy boxer and just a shade away from being a proper player in the division.

Looked like he trained on whole vats of his Mama's pasta, ice cream and a cellar of good Chianti...but the guy could fight a bit and Mercer stills calls him out as one of the very best men he faced and admitted that he needed to find a shot that night. Francesco was at the London Olympics with the Italian team and actually looked a bit trimmer than when he was fighting.

Mercer also deserves some props....as mentioned by earlier posters.

I notice that very few of the picks are from the 1980's. Im sure there were more great Heavyweight fights in the 1980's.
This decade probably represented the best decade in Boxing history. It is right up there anyway.
