Golovkin - Murray/Frampton-Avalos Viewing Figures

Post by black panther »

It’s been brilliant to see top class boxing return to terrestrial television in the last two weeks. The viewing figures for the Frampton fight won’t be out yet but according to BARB ( not sure how reliable they are), Golovkin-Murray did 740k:

http://www.barb.co.uk/whats-new/weekly-top-30?

In the grand scheme of things is this a good number? Is it enough to encourage channel 5 to invest further in boxing? What do you think the numbers for ther Frampton fight will be and is there a future for boxing back on terrestrial television? Interested to hear your thoughts - particularly those more knowledgable on the subject of tv ratings than I.

The business side of boxing is the side I thrive on, its what got me obsessed with the sport in the first place.

The Frampton fight had a peak audience of 457,000 viewers, with a 76% share. This may not sound a lot, but that fact it was on at 11pm at night means it was never going to reach the magical 1.000,000 mark.

If ITV managed to get the Frampton v Quigg fight, and did it properly, 24/7 type shows, adverts at prime time for weeks, weigh in live on ITV and a competitive undercard on ITV4, as well as the obvious need to start the main event an hour earlier then I think they would do huge numbers. Even if it does clash with MOTD, however, there is an obvious crossover of fans between the sports, hence many fighters affiliation to football clubs getting them such big suports.

Whilst I am not sure channel 5 will be in the position to go BIG with boxing, unless they get Fury back on, I do however think ITV could do some huge things to British boxing at world level. Enough to eclipse SKY and their PPV big bucks.

GGG 740K is a good figure for Channel 5. The only large audience they enjoy is Big Brother which is generally over a million, but otherwise the rest of their output is way less than 740K.

I never know how they work these numbers out  , how do they know what channel is on in my house?

Agree terrestrial TV a great 2 weeks however I noticed the Frampton broadcast was littered, absolutely littered with sh*t, especially bloody car adverts. :witzend:

I disagree, look at the site, it got beat by Top Gun... TWICE... and only finished in 29th place for the week!

By contrast, Fury vs Cunningham did more than double the viewing numbers (1.54mil) on channel 5 on April 21st 2013, and finished in 2nd place for the week!

If the Frampton fight only does 457k, as Sammy says, then surely this is terrible!!! I doubt it would even break the top 100 for ITV!!!

Says 2m viewers here
That's the overnight figure, the final calculated figure will come out next Monday, should be somewhere in that range.

Assuming its a big summer fight won't have to worry about clashing with MOTD and depending on when in the summer it is people may well be desperate for some form of sporting fix if they are predominantly football fans.

Don't know if I will have helped with the viewing figures, Frampton fight I watched the main event in the pub. The next day at home I watched it again as I'd recorded it and also watched the whole of the undercard from ITV4. I did think of the ITV4 show it was a shame that we didn't see any of the ring entrances (don't know why but I always think they are part of the build up and like to see them), and also if I remember rightly we didn't see any post fight interviews which seemed a shame. I know they are not normally massively informative as they are in the heat of the moment but thought the lads they showed deserved their moment in front of the camera.

I was in Belfast the weekend before the fight - non-boxing fans, male and female, all know Frampton. The buzz around him was huge.

Interesting insights Sammy. It's a real shame that so often terrestrial broadcasters only flirt with boxing instead of truly committing themselves to making a proper go of it. It's as if they view as a niche sport with a niche audience and don't see its potential as a mainstream sport.

I certainly hope that ITV will step it up for Frampton's next fight. In terms of pre-fight promotion (interviews, features, preview shows etc) but also getting it on in a better viewing slot (at least an hour earlier, as you say, and with a couple of live undercard fights as well on the main ITV channel).

The programme itself could do with a certain sparkle. Ditch the hard-working but personality-drained Mark Pougatch and bring in a certain Mr Jim Rosenthal.

Found where 457,000 and the 76% audience share came from, that's the Northern Ireland viewing figure, 25% of the population watching live.

Everyone seems to forget that commercial channels such as ITV and Channel 5 need to generate advertising revenues - in other words, it's not just about viewing numbers, it's about how attractive the perceived demographic is to advertisers. The fact it's qualitative rather than quantitative is why something like Big Brother was always so disproportionately attractive to advertisers back in the day and why it was therefore a signature property for Channel 4. By contrast, the sad reality is that boxing doesn't tend to be an attractive proposition to advertisers, largely because it's perceived, rightly or wrongly, to be predominantly followed by older, low income males, which is one of the least attractive demographics to advertisers (check out the type of radio ads on Talksport and you'll see see what I mean!).
By the way, BARB is hopelessly outdated and contains fundamental flaws as a measurement tool, which is insane when you think of the size of TV ad spend:

Thats right Deserter...

Myself I think its because, we (the boxing word), are an intelligent bunch of people who are very independent and don't simply do what we are told to do!

Contrary to this, the Big Brother world, probably sit there slackjawed watching the adverts and buy whatever they are told to buy. Much like the music teen world like/buy whatever Simon Cowell tells them to like/buy!

If we want boxing to be successful on commercial channels we need to take note of what is advertised between rounds and/or fights, and go out and buy a shit load of it... Then the TV channels will be able to charge the advertisers more money, meaning they can then give more money to the promoters, meaning the promoters can then pay more money to the fighters, meaning we then get better fights on terrestrial TV (excluding the BBC of course).

Either way, (TV License, buying the bollocks we see in adverts, PPV or subscription) we end up paying for it some how!

Sounds like the B&I board will all be driving Audis by the end of the week then.

Boxing on a Saturday night on mainstream tv would bring thousands of new fans on board! I wish a channel would really commit and drive the sport forward. I remember the crescendo of excitement in my home growing up when Benn/Eubank even Shea Neary was fighting on ITV and my family weren't hardcore boxing fans! I had to do do all my schoolwork and house duties just so my ma n da would get me any PPV events that were on the horizon!

The main culprits to be frank are the BBC - in contrast to the commercial channels they have an ethical obligation to cater to all demographics, yet the nature of the management there means that boxing is regarded as 'inappropriate' and they look on it with ill-disguised disdain.

Nearly 2 million peak isn't too bad for the time slot Frampton was on. I am however disappointed that the Murray vs Golovkin fight didn't break a million, Fury used to do much higher numbers on channel 5.
