Dennis Andries

I was a big fan of Andries as well. I remember his fight with Hearns, Dennis was outclassed but that didn't stop him coming. He was a fighter's fighter, I've loads of respect for him.

I can remember the Hearns bout, I was stood up yelling when he dropped Tommy, Dennis was so brave and gave it everything and the Cobo Hall (I always thought it was the Kobo Arena) was a cauldren. It's incredible that after beating Dennis, Tommy went down to middleweight to capture another title.

I think I read Jeff was on the streets some time ago and broke? I hope his fortunes have changed.

Was it 28 years ago seems like yesterday,if i remember correctly it was shown live and at a reasonable time on a Saturday evening then later on Tyson fought Bonecrusher in what turned out to be a stinker.how did Andries get up from the massive right from Tommy ?

I cant remember which fight it was-maybe one of he Harding fights-but I remember Dennis giving his true age in an unguarded moment in the after fight interview-which was hushed up pretty quickly-does any one else remember that?

The Harding fights were super. I was a big Harding can. Wasn't a big puncher but sooooo tough. He looked weedy next to the built Andries.

I think I read Jeff was on the streets some time ago and broke? I hope his fortunes have changed.

I was a big Harding fan as well, the call to fight Dennis the first time came pretty late in the day and when you consider he had to go over to Atlantic City to do it (having never boxed out of New South Wales before, let alone boxing anywhere else in Australia or overseas) you get a good picture/measure of what he did that night.

Sure Jeff was undefeated and definitely going somewhere, but you've got a guy who was basically fighting on dinner shows at working men's club shows and tough rugby league joints, and suddenly he turns up with the right attitude and digs in to win a WBC belt in Atlantic City! What Harding took in that fight before coming back was heroic.

The triology with Andries was fantastic, but I still think Jeff's best moment was going over to France and doing a number on Christophe Tiozzo in Marseille...that was a result. Tiozzo was pretty handy and knocking him out in a place like France deserves some respect.

andries management ballsed up big as it was just inside the same financial year as his previous fight so both were taxed at the top rate costing him most of his purse ,a couple of weeks later would of saved him a lot of his purse if i remember right he took about 20k from the fight

I thought it was shown the following Saturday afternoon. I remember watching it down the pub and it was snowing outside. I think......

It may have been snowing inside the pub as well.

Yeah good point about the first Andries fight. As I remember he was a total unknown, was referred to erroneously as 'Jess Harding' in a few Brit papers.

I seem to remember he was actually rated at super middle after his previous victory although looking at his record he had fought mainly in the low 170 range.

Any of the Aussie posters know what happened to him? I will try some research

Dennis got screwed over tax as well if i remember right the hearns fight was in the same tax year as his previous sibson and Williams fight moving him to the top 50% tax rate if it had been a few weeks later it would of saved him much of his purse

Yeh it was definately live on the saturday evening,i remember it very well,me and my old fella were screaming when tommy briefly hit the deck and if it wasn't live then we would have known who won beforehand,proper hard case was Andries.
