Watched a bizarre fight in Wythenshawe once Lester Fuentes v Mauricio Martinez for the vacant WBO Bantamweight title. No idea how or why that ended up there.

I watched Nikolai Valuev vs Darren Fearn (?) at York hall. Valuev got some press because of his size. I believe Fearn froze with fear at Valuev's size. Nikolai was being promoted by Frank/Kellie Maloney.... Don't know how/why he let him go....

Mexican-American vs Colombian, for a world title, in a leisure centre in Sunderland, no promoter listed on the show, but they must have been off their tits when they made that one.

There must have been some strong acid around back then.

I think it was sheer public demand that brought South Africa's Lehlo Ledwaba defence of his IBF super-bantamweight title against Argentina's Eduardo Alvarez to Maidstone Leisure Centre. From Maidstone to Manny. three fights and eight months later.

Cedric Kushner promoted the Quiroga-Perez fight, in the days when he was still breaking through and would promote just about anywhere. Perez had won the title in a stinker with Elly Pical so there was no interest in the fight in the States.

I remember watching Julio Pablo Chacon (Argentine) vs Victor Polo (Columbian) which was held at the York Hall on Sky Sports. Pretty random.

Also Johnny Tapia blasted some guy called Eduardo Enrique Alvarez in the first round with bodyshots at the York Hall. That was also pretty random!

I just double checked to find out that he did and also lost.

I know he went around a lot on the road to make extra money but as someone who knows paisley reasonably well its just hard to image a fighter of that status ever fighting there....
My home town. Also Ali and Sonny Liston had exhibition bouts at the old ice rink on Walter McGowan cards in the 60s. I didn't know that about Robinson.

I met Walter McGowans son through work and he has some interesting stories about his dad's time as a fighter.
He has pictures of Muhammed Ali with his dad and claims that Ali asked for the photo, to be fair he does look star struck in the photo.

Someone with a better knowledge will know how true this is but Im led to believe that McGowan was at his peak just as Ali (Clay) had turned pro which could explain his excitement at meeting Walter McGowan.

There have been some moments from the Matchroom stable.

Licinia vs Cora Jnr on the Haye vs Harrison Undercard - not that it got televised here.

Barry Hearn had some links with Hungarian(?) TV and used to have Hungarian fighters in the left hand column on quite a few of his Sky shows before Eddie took over.... we never saw them, but they were like the Main event on Hungarian TV.

Rocky Marciano vs Jack Matthews.

Rocky was based in Wales, and had some amateur fights there, the now Dr Jack Matthews lasted the distance and would go on to be part of Wales Rugby Union grand slam side of 1950 and win 17 caps for the British and Irish Lions.
