Supermiddleweights - USA vs UK

Post by davie »

It's looking like Froch vs Ward for the WBA is highly likely, Degale vs Andre Dirrell for the IBF is set and Groves vs Anthony Dirrell WBC may not be a million miles away.

How many belts do you think will end up this side of the water by the end of the year?

Degale vs Dirrell is happening in America. We know that.
Let's assume Froch vs Ward happen in the UK (I'm saying this to give Carl a fighting chance and to make the discussion interesting, if he fights Ward on his doorstep again, he loses every time)
And I'm guessing if Groves gets Anthony Dirrell he'll have to travel, Dirrell is the champion and I'm not sure Sauerland are going to break the bank to bring Dirrell over

So assuming the above happens, who do you think takes the belts? (I've run this on the british board as well for comparison, the results are predictable  )

Andre doesn't seem to have many sexy options, but I'm still not sold that Andre vs Carl II will go down. If it does, wherever it does I think Andre wins. It'd be funner if Carl won, cuz Carl is the funner guy to watch & than maybe we could get a trilogy. I don't see it happening though.

The Andre Dirrell vs James DeGale fight is highly interesting to me as a guy who was a big Dirrell fan from his amateur days til he basically fell off the boxing map post-Arthur. He's been sorta kinda active, but he hasn't fought anyone elite in 5 years. Its been an amazing waste of time for a once promising fighter. Who knows what he has left at this point. I know 2009 Dirrell outboxes DeGale all day, but 2015 Dirrell will be the one in the ring. Idk what to expect in that fight, but I kinda gotta lean towards DeGale even though I don't really want to.

Anthony Dirrell is fighting Badou Jack next & I know people love hating on Jack, but I don't hate his chances here so idk if Groves will be getting Dirrell or Jack. I do think Groves is sorta overrated as I think Carl isn't quite what he used to be more than Groves is all that, but I mean Groves, Dirrell & Jack are probably all overrated to varying degrees so idk that I care too much who wins let alone have much of an opinion. I guess I'd just lean towards the guy who's fighting at home.

looks like we're all in agreement so far.

There's not a great deal between Groves, Degale and the 2 Dirrells for me. Recent form and location should be the big deciding factors.

Isn't Jack the guy who was supposed to fight Degale a while back, but it fell through after he got KO'd by a journeyman?
Can't see Anthony D losing that fight.
Groves may be overrated to a degree, but I still think on his day he can beat Anthony D.
I pretty much agree with everything else.

lol, but yea thats one way to put it. Like I said I'm not super impressed with any of these guys is my main thing. Jack is clearly the #3 guy here, but I don't believe its by as much as most would think (I think Boxrec rankings correctly have all three of these guys ranked within 11 spots of each other). I know some people are impressed with the way Groves lost to Froch, but I try not to be a fan of a guy cuz how he losses. None of these guys give me any feeling of confidence in being right if I picked them is what it all boils down to for me.

I've not seen enough of the Dirrell's recently to say for sure how the fights involving them would go so the only one I'm certain of is Ward v Froch. Ward wins that unless he has lost a lot during his period of inactivity and its not a fight I want to see

I've liked what I've seen of Andre Dirrell since the Abraham debacle, admittedly the opposition hasn't been as big as Super 6 but he seems to have a mean streak about him,he's impressed me and IMO is Ward's biggest threat

I'd favor the three Americans but I think Degale and Groves have solid chances of winning. Ward is the only big favorite for me.

Ward, Froch and Andre Dirrell are the A team at Super Middle. Andre has the gifts to be number 1 but he lacks balls. Thought he beat Froch but he made it ugly and beat himself that night.

Slightly surprised by the outcome.

Both the British and current scene have Ward beating Froch, but CS has it much tighter
Both boards have Degale & Groves winning against the Dirrells, but CS is a wider split in the UK fighters favour.

My suspicions of bias are completely unfounded

I couldn't vote for the Dirrells - Antony Dirrell as he's the list convincing fighter on the list, certainly not by a long way, but going life and death with old man Bika is a bit of a concern, as is avoiding Groves to fight Jack, doesn't scream confidence.

Andre could easily be in my top 3 but can't vote for someone who hasn't been fighting at top level for years. Glad he's fighting Degale next so we can see whether he's genuinely back and what Degale is made of.
