Joe and Manuel Azevedo

First time at this site, and amazed that I found the fights of my grandfather Manuel Azevedo (087872) and his brother Joe (011871). I searched for records online years ago and found very little. Im glad beyond words that this site exists; thank you all for your efforts, it means quite a bit.

If you have the time, you may want to update the listings of both - their original nationality was Portuguese yes, but I think my grandfather at least would have liked his birthplace listed as the Azores, which is where the family came from. Also, my grandfather was born in 1900 and passed away in 1978 in his beloved Sacramento. Im sorry, I dont know the exact dates and cause of death, I was only 12 at the time.

We lived in Oregon then, and I only spent two summers with my grandparents as a kid, but I remember his pride in having fought at Madison Sq Garden (also his funny stories of Max Baer who was his best friend for years). I remember my grandmother telling us in hushed tones that he'd had a brother who had died years ago, but we werent to talk or ask about it. This is the first Ive read of his older brother Joe, and the first Ive learned he was a boxer as well. Incredible that I find out here and now, but it explains a great deal that I was probably far too young to understand.

He was a tough old cuss and I was a spoiled brat and all I can think of now is everything I should have asked him and he could have taught me. Which is why I thank you again for your efforts in this site; it means far more to some people than just boxing.
