I hope he's bearing up OK and adjusted to prison life; he'll get through - drug sentences are a joke compared to other crimes, best of luck to him.

There was a bloke in the Doncaster Star last week; he'd contacted his long lost daughter - aged 14, he'd then gone on to abuse and rape her over a 12 month period. The girl told a social worker and then the police. The bloke went to court and got 12 month.
Re: What's the latest on Steve O'Meara
That's worthy of execution in my book, law doesn't allow it, but he should still have got the maximum sentence allowed, some judges clearly have no right to be in their job if they're handing down sentences like that.palooka wrote:There was a bloke in the Doncaster Star last week; he'd contacted his long lost daughter - aged 14, he'd then gone on to abuse and rape her over a 12 month period. Devils advocate. O'meara was done for drugs. Which are bought by addicts who often commit crimes and burglaries to buy the stuff, like the guys who may have beat up and nearly killed Anthony Crolla.
I liked O'meara and he was a good pro boxer who came across as a nice bloke, however because he was a boxer and we all like him arent we guilty of double standards if on the one hand we are saying he was hard done by but on another thread people are saying that villains (often feeding drug habits) dont get dealt with strongly enough?

As long as you can afford things like that and its a hobby rather than a habit and your not hurting anyone, then for me its no worse than smoking or drinking, everything in moderation is my motto
But Steve must have knew what he was doing and the risk involved, poo happens,i would never do it because i wouldnt be able to do the time, getting caught with a bit of personal is my limit,i will begrudginly pay the fine which i have done on more than one occasion
Re: What's the latest on Steve O'Meara
The problem is that the current way of thinking is to take down the dealers and bang them up, while trying to stop drugs flowing into the country. Doing that will never solve anything, the demand for drugs will always be there, and while it is, there will always be people willing to sell them.handsofstone wrote:I see what you mean,i like a joint and have been known to enjoy the occasional line,im not condoning it ,its just that i have never robbed for it and i work for it and its the same for most people i knowBroomhall wrote:Devils advocate. They cant even keep drugs out of prison let alone the country
Re: What's the latest on Steve O'Meara
It's a losing battle, what's the point in fighting it? They've just sent 18 of them away here for dealing heroin, doubt it will make a difference. Some of them have been done before, one of them was sent down for dealing a few years ago, he's been shot and kidnapped and he's still doing it, they're wasting their time.handsofstone wrote:They cant even keep drugs out of prison let alone the country

I have to admit Broomhall, you're 100% spot on there. Good point.

Sentenced to 13 years yesterday. With time spent on remand and good behaviour he'll probably be out in 4.
Re: What's the latest on Steve O'Meara
When I was younger (than i am now lol) I got 3 months (just under 6 weeks) in the Jimmy Nail. I honestly don't know how some folk get through it! It's hard time! People who say it is easy have never done it! Good luck to anyone doing time. Jail can be a breeding ground for scum but you can also meet some good people at the same time!

The reason why drug charges are so severe is normally because the people who sell drugs are often far worse than the people who take them and are often connected to other things such as sex slavery, gun running and general racketeering.
When alcohol was prohibited in the states the gangs smuggled and sold it illegally, when the US government then lifted prohibition, it took out a route for the gangs to make money. Lift the ban on drugs and prostitution you'd destroy half the organised gangs in this country as it's their main source of income.

Couldnt agree more. The UK jails are full of drug users, low level pushers and people committing low level theft to support their habit. And then they're turfed out to do the same thing.banjo wrote:The reason why drug charges are so severe is normally because the people who sell drugs are often far worse than the people who take them and are often connected to other things such as sex slavery, gun running and general racketeering.

Holland and Portugal have a different approach built around solving and helping rather than punishment like the UK.

12 years does send out an effective message of what happens if you choose to get involved in drug dealing etc. And I do agree that the mindset in dealing with drugs here in the UK is wrong. Drug addiction needs to be seen as illness and not a crime, and all drugs should be legalised.
By doing this it allows the Government to control supply and generate taxation through licenced drug stores,Which can also give the opportunity to help addicts get off the gear. I support the legalisation of drugs.
