Your new favourite boxing writer

Post by Datsue »

Talking about the mighty Springs Toledo on another thread got me to thinking:

Does anyone remember Zeferino Jackson, who used to write about Oscar De La Hoya's "nude full-body greasedowns", B-Hop's old prison mate "Spanky" & their kinky watersports sessions & how ODLH hated black people 'cos a bunch of crackheads once tortured his pet mouse, Gonzalito, to death?

Jackson managed to get published on badlefthook, blacksportsonline, bleacher-report & on & on & on (though most places have, since someone blew the whistle a few years back, gone & deleted them all now). But a good place to start is here: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=zefer ... 7gaG3IHoDA...

My absolute favourite of Jackson's was the story he sold to Bleacher Report about Israel Vazquez & the ancient Aztec bestiality PED cult, that was fvcking bazzing.

PS: Respect to Paul Magno of the Boxing Tribune, whose recent column stirred glorious memories of Jackson, kudos to the man.

Terry Dooley wrote:I also miss out on good bad writers as I don't visit websites often enough. Springs Toledo got some epic reviews, but I only recognised one of the names.

Well worth checking out Springs' stuff mate, especially if you've ever seen Barton Fink.

"Lower East Side. Early morning traffic is audible, as is the cry of the fishmongers..."

But Zeferino Jackson was a-MAY-zing. Look up some of his stuff & tell me how no-one spotted he was massively taking the piss for about five years... Particularly, like I said, the awesome Israel Vazquez Aztec Bestiality PED cult story. & I have a soft spot for poor ickle Gonzalito...

i think some of the comments are a touch harsh, Toledo seems to have some flair for the written word, he just comes across like he enjoys exercising that flair a bit too much. Its form / style over content, as if he wants everyone to marvel at what an astounding writer he is all the time rather than engage with his subject. I suppose it is an ego thing - if he could rein that in a bit he'd probably be very good.

There's some fella called datsue writes some good stuff, if only he'd drop that tiresome pose of objectivity&balance and actually give his opinion now and then.
