More talented than skilful IMO.
So standing in front of a dangerous opponent like Ernie Terrell with his hands down while Ernie through combinations at his face and
he evaded with minute movements isn't skillful? Or out foxing Foreman by laying on the ropes isn't either?? Anyway... Ali seems to be disregarded a lot these days by boxing experts. He only seems to be revered by the 'general public'. Strange that.... :KO:

Do you really think Terrell was some sort of murderous puncher?

Ambling Alp II wrote:To me, skillful is about being technically sound in all phases of the sport.
To me, it would be Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, and Gene Tunney.

Pep was a better offensive fighter than other great defensive fighters like Whitaker and Benitez, but his offense wasn't enough to make him number #1.

Gans, Langford,Benny Leonard,Louis, Charles, Harold Johnson,Monzon, and maybe a few others are up there.
These guys all could throw any punch effectively, were clean punchers with good accuracy, and were good defensively. What sets Robinson Leonard, and Tunney apart is that also could move around the ring on their feet so well.
Others could move around well, but were missing other components.

Good post.

I didn't say that. He was a solid, fast straight puncher. He couldn't catch Ali.

Ernie (may he R.I.P.) was not a dangerous opponent for Ali, especially after Ali thumbed him early. Ernie's main goal that night was to go the distance, which he did easily.

Terrell was a tall plodder with a decent jab, but to make him out as some sort of fast, combination machine is horse shite.

From my own lifetime, my favourites are McCallum, Trinidad and Mosley.

McCallum for his ability to swarm without being hit - his defensive aggression; Tito for his speed and accuracy, his technique-based power, and his gift for tripling-up with the same hand; and Mosley for his amazing sense of distance.

James Toney deserves a mention, but Willie Pep is the master for me, even though he is completely different type of fighter.

When you watch footage of Willie Pep, it often looks like a 10th degree black belt teaching students. I think sometimes his punching power get's underrated, strictly by pct of KO's, but if you watch him you'll see him tag guys pretty good at times.

Willie Pep was so quick, especially before the plane crash, that nobody could touch him. I guess that is why they called him Will o' the Wisp."

He wasn't too shabby after the crash either, and being in a body cast for months (broken leg and back).

SRL comes first to mind. he had such an arsenal of
tactics to choose from. this rare talent of moving
like a dancer while having real pep in his punch. i
do not like how he mocked other great fighters, but
the skills were all his. he makes boxing look so terribly
easy. you see a leonard fight you want to try it yourself.

howard davis jnr was a skillful fighter, i've always thought that benny leonard was just about perfect, now it's only pictures i've seen of him but he looks like he had perfect balance, and everything i've read about him says he was a pretty amazing fighter technically.
