A pub near me is showing Floyd vs Pac...

Post by ILikeBeer »

And charging £10 to get in.

WTF? :  The PPV is only £20, when you consider that they charge between £3.60 and £3.70 a pint round here, it barely seems worth going to.

It'd be cheaper to order the PPV, then to buy a ticket to this pub and drink three pints. :o

The price of a PPV for a pub/club is much higher than if you're buying it at home.

Sky costs an absolute fortune for pubs, it wouldn't surprise me if a ppv would also cost a huge amount for them.

How much do you think the pub will have to pay for it??

Plus the cost of staying open until 6am

True. It just doesn't strike me as a particularly good deal for the punter. I aint got Sky Sports, but I'm on Virgin and can order the PPV over that platform for £20 should I so wish. Or pay £10 to watch it in a pub where beer is going to be more than £3.50 a pint.

I see what you're saying thugh, they've got to recoup the money they're paying somehow, as they probably wouldn't just by selling alcohol. And not everybody can order PPVs on their telly, if they're on freeview or whatever. So it's not an option for some punters. Maybe it's on a extra-massive screen as well.

For perspective, the first Froch v Groves fight cost commercial premises £225+VAT in addition to their monthly charges.

That's the thing, a lot of people won't be able to buy the box office event on their TV at home.

Also, assuming it's a normal pub, they'll have to get an extension to their license, so maybe it's only worth it if they know they'll make a certain amount.

Still, fucked if I'd pay a tenner for a shit view surrounded by people who are probably shitfaced by then.

+ about £140 for there monthy charge.

I think £10 is a bit too steep know a few boozers that have done £5 a pop and there's a little buffet put on.

I agree with the original poster, I think £10 is far too much for a pub to be charging.

It will be interesting to see if the demand is there for pubs to screen it, considering the time of the fight and the cost of the PPV for them.

If you are worried about the price of beer at 6am then you have more to worry about than pub admission prices.

I'm probably going to the pub on Saturday to watch Kell Brook, as I don't have regular Sky Sports. There's a pub advertised as showing it, but it'll probably be busy on a Saturday night. This can be a bit of a pain in the arse, when you're trying to watch something.

As my local pub gets predominantly office based staff, it gets dead on a Saturday night. I've arranged to meet a mate there, hopefully persuade them to put Sky Sports One on, and then watch some of the undercard with mates and a quieter pub. It closes at 11, so at some point I'm going to have to transfer to watch the main event.

Not sure I'd pay £10 to be stuck in a pub full of people. When I watch Chisora vs Haye in the same pub, there was barely space to stand, and I had to fight my way to the bar. Pain in the arse.

If its a proper locals pub they wouldn't bother with the licence, tell the locals maybe advertise inside (only) and just run it with the landlord behind the jump so no staff.

I don't think many pubs will bother with it unless the landlord himself is a big fan and knows a few regulars are too. Not because its not a big fight and people won't be interested, purely because of the time its on. People talk a good game about watching these fights but will be burnt out by the time it even gets close to starting if they're a drinker

First supermarket chain I've ever seen with a television in, as well. When you queue up, they have BBC News on silent for you to watch.

Maybe I'll enquire about their chances of having Floyd vs Pac on. That way I can sit there, and buy beer and snacks as I need them. :salut:

I think a tenner is all sright, it cost that to go to the pictures, plus your guaranteed a good atmosphere as only boxing fans will show up. I remember paying £5 to watch Bruno Tyson in a pub and that was probably about £5000 in todays money.

I used to drink in a boozer in East London and they got rid of sky, BT etc, we asked the landlord why, he said because it costs £30,000 a year! I think he might having telling porkies about that, but it does cost a lot. If you want to watch for free, go to casino's they allways have it on and there is no entry fee. :TU:

For those interested, this article states on average independent pubs paid £643.00 a month for Sky Sports back in 2013. So now it must be even more than that:

Price comparison based on research conducted by Sweeney Pinedo in Feb 2013. 267 independent pubs surveyed paid on average £643 per month for Sky Sports vs. £138.08 for the new BT Sport Pack after discounts applied,

It's linked to the rateable value of the premises as well as capacity. Some pubs pay in excess of £1500 a month.
