herol graham v nigel benn

Post by semtexreilly »

two of my favourite british fighters, how do you see the outcome of a middleweight battle between these two????,graham to box benns head off,and win clearly on points,or benn catching him with a bomb out of nothing id say!!!!

Herol on points all day, Benn wouldn't have been able to cope with his style (same as pretty much everyone else).

It would have been similar to the Rod Douglas fight

Benn one of my favourites fighters but I think Graham too slick for him. The Jackson KO was a bit special but Graham rarely got hit flush like that, unfortunately for him it happened to be by one of the hardest one punch hitters you could find. I have a feeling Graham would frustrate Benn and win by decision.

love nigel - but Watson frustrated him to bits...so herol - even more tricky than Michael - would win either a late stoppage or, more likely, a wide points win

To be fair on Benn he was quite inexperienced at that point and fought a foolish fight, fighting at 100mph. Even so I agree Graham was a tricky customer and Benn would've struggled to outbox him.

Gut instinct says Benn, swarming and constant aggression as well as a clinical finisher at middleweight. Quick enough to get close enough to Herol as well. But if he went in there and fought like he did against Watson then Herol would have happily picked him off. I'll go for a switched-on version of Nigel getting a stoppage win in about 10 rounds and he's well behind on points.

:TU: a bout between Rod and Benn would have been an X rated shot out, Herol would have boxed Benn's ears off and stopped him before round 9.

I will go against the Grain with this one. I pick Benn as he had the better competitive spirit and that little extra championship class. Benn could win the big one; Herol couldn't. I love Herol to bits. He is one of the most gifted British boxers there ever was. Benn could use more of 'what he got' though, even if he did have less natural ability than Graham. A late stoppage for Benn.

People forget that Herol could bang as well. If you had to design a style that would suit Graham down to the ground to box, you would come up with Nigel Benn.

Benn struggled with boxers, Sanderline Williams a tricky customer only lost a SD and Malinga gave him problems. I can't see Benn repeating what Jackson did, he never showed that sort of one punch power over world class fighters. He just wouldn't land enough punches in my opinion.

Rod Douglas was a really good puncher and was a hot prospect and he landed nothing, Nigel would have been the same; he'd have been so frustrated and walk into solid punches, turned, messed about and then broken down. Herol at his best was amazing.

Rod Douglas was a top amateur making his way up in the professional game when he fought Herol Graham, no comparison to the presence or achievements Nigel Benn had in the late 80s or early 90s. I think Benn would be too ferocious and would eventually kayo Herol, whereas Herol would be too skilled for Chris Eubank. Horses for courses really

Benn's got a puncher's chance, but more often than not I think Graham would outbox him. This could be pretty frustrating for the Dark Destroyer unless he get's lucky.

as it happens, Douglas beat Benn in the ABA'S, IIRC

regarding benn-graham i have a tough time imagining how the style mix would work.

you mention Douglas not landing a.glove on graham which is true- there were some astonishing displays of evasiveness from graham in that fight- but as i think broomhall says above Benn would have much better speed to close with graham than did the slightly onepaced, plodding douglas

I'm on the fence on this one

After fighting Benn Sanderline Williams got a draw with Toney and close points defeat to Mcclellan so was a pretty good result really

Graham,all day easy
And i'm a massive Benn fan, but,as has been said, he was custom made for Herol who wins stoppage 8-10.

I think you misread my post. Maybe Palooka did as well, but he is from up north so at least has an excuse as probably spent childhood downt pit or teaching kestrels to fly.

Essentially I see this fight as a walk in the park for Graham. Everyone thinks Graham just a fancy dan, but he could fight and scored 28 KOs in 48 wins-and some of those guys top top fighters.
