Russell KO's Gonzalez in 4th Round
Russell KO's Gonzalez in 4th Round
Gary Russell looked good in there against Jhonny Gonzalez, he looked an improved fighter and not the one who lost to Lomachenko.
Re: Russell KO's Gonzalez in 4th Round
The opponent might have something to do with it given how sluggish, clumsy, and chinny Jhonny looked compared to Loma. I didn't see any abilities that Russell hadn't already shown and Loma took Russell's shots without seeming remotely bothered.Evander wrote:he looked an improved fighter and not the one who lost to Lomachenko.
Still a career-best showing by far for Russell though, and I'd love to see him fight Mares.

Eh, I'm not too excited for a rematch at this point. I'd like to see them against other opponents before they fight again.

i still think hat loma needs a new trainer and needs to fight more intelligent. with his athletiscm and overall well rounded style he could be much mroe effective wouldnt he be so sluggish so many times. sometimes you have to box smart. i see loma beating jr again. but jr definitly looked improved today. anyway, walther beats them all.
Re: Russell KO's Gonzalez in 4th Round
Styles make fights, Loma worked Russell out in 3 rounds and never looked back, Loma is very sharp with pivoting and turning opponents walking them into punches, along with his speed and counter punching he will be very hard to beat, he learnt heaps from salido
Re: Russell KO's Gonzalez in 4th Round
I agree. It seems fairly obvious to me that Lomachenko is a significantly different fighter than the much slower and stiffer but heavier punching Gonzalez, and I don't see what Russell did tonight that Loma didn't already cope with in their bout.Pureist wrote:Styles make fights, Loma worked Russell out in 3 rounds and never looked back, Loma is very sharp with pivoting and turning opponents walking them into punches, along with his speed and counter punching he will be very hard to beat, he learnt heaps from salido

bollx thought Gonzalez would KO oh well who was up before the KO
Re: Russell KO's Gonzalez in 4th Round
Russell clearly won every round in my view and he scored a KD in the third. I suspect that it was 30-26 x3.ajwesty13 wrote:bollx thought Gonzalez would KO oh well who was up before the KO

Who else can beat a decent opponent with one arm and don't break a sweat ?crusader wrote:I agree. Re: Russell KO's Gonzalez in 4th Round
Gonzalez clearly picked the wrong opponent , Russell is too fast , good footwork , solid skills . First time I've seen him but he will be a handful for anyone at 126 #
Gonzalez .... at 33 that is about it for a guy at Featherweight, his chin recovery time seemed gone and he appears a bit shopworn , the reflexes start to erode just enough to make a difference and against a super fast boxer like Russell it proved catastrophic.

Re: Russell KO's Gonzalez in 4th Round
I disagree with this statement, there are guys who are bigger that are or should be shopworn that is much older than JG (Marquez comes to mind) and for anyone to say this after the way that JG disposed of Mares in quick and devastating fashion is just simply not recognizing that Gonzalez just wasn't fast enough to deal with GR even though you did stated that much.Kootenay47 wrote:Gonzalez clearly picked the wrong opponent , Russell is too fast , good footwork , solid skills . I focused mostly on the part in bold because many people will say stuff like this without adding the rest of the equation like you did now that JG has gotten handled easily but the difference is that they'll be saying that about him vs any opponent which just isn't true.
Re: Russell KO's Gonzalez in 4th Round
Gonzalez has looked terrible since his victory over Mares. This only means that the two top fighters left in the division are Loma and Walters. Can't wait for that fight.

Re: Russell KO's Gonzalez in 4th Round
Look at the damn rankings...
Walters at #1 is absolutely fine, after he KO'd both, Darchinyan, and Donaire. But Castellanos at #2? How? Why? What has he done? And Vetyeka at #3.. because he beat Chris John or what? Russell didn't beat anyone, before he lost his fight with Lomachenko. Yesterday he picked up his biggest win by far, and should be considered a Top-10.
Cuellar at #5. He retired Juanma Lopez, but is this enough to be at #5? Mares at #6? Shouldn't he be ranked behind Gonzalez, unless Mares wins a fight again? And who the hell is Sonjica at #7? Never heard of him! Selby at #8 seems fine, Gradovich at #9 aswell. Gonzalez behind all of these guys, because he lost to now supposedly #4 ranked Russell Jr. Well, okay.
Hosono at #11? Hunter at #12? And damn Lomachenko at #13? Why? Didn't he beat up the #4 in Russell Jr, last year?
...
should be like that:
#01 Nicholas Walters
#02 Vasyl Lomachenko
#03 Gary Russell Jr
#04 Jhonny Gonzalez
#05 Abner Mares
#06 Evgeny Gradovich
#07 Lee Selby
#08 Jayson Velez
#09 Simpiwe Vetyeka
#10 Jesus M.A. Cuellar
