No, he wasn't. Not by anything we have to go on. Certainly not based on any filmed evidence, including the short bits of him pre-plane crash. Whitaker was one of the most skilled and versatile offensive boxers of all time.Ambling Alp II wrote:

...i go with willie.....he was so damn much fun to watch.....could totally frustrate an opponent....
haven't seen him mentioned here, but billy graham was highly skilled. not flashy...but so smart. another guy i loved to watch. carmen basilio said he was the smartest guy he fought. (while we're at his, carmen said gavilan was the quickest and sugar ray was the hardest hitter.)

..willie pep.....loved to watch him razzle-dazzle his opponents.
i think billy graham deserves a nod here....smart, good inside and outside.....carmen basilio said he was the smartest fighter he ever faced...( for the' record, basilio said gavilan was the quickest and sugar ray the hardest hitter.)

...i wish i had seen tippy larkin. those who did say he was a marvel. glass chin kept him from major success.
Re: Most Skillfull Fighter Of Alltime ?
I have three men in mind:
Sam langford
Henry Armstrong
and Ray Robinson.
But really it is difficult to pick there have been so many. Was Benny Leonard better than Roberto Duran at lightweight? As it is, choosing one does not diminish the other.

Totally agree with your view on ALI gees can any-one do that shuffle like himevrenb wrote:So standing in front of a dangerous opponent like Ernie Terrell with his hands down while Ernie through combinations at his face andTomasino wrote:evrenb wrote:Sorry if obvious but no one thinks Ali???
More talented than skilful IMO.
he evaded with minute movements isn't skillful? Or out foxing Foreman by laying on the ropes isn't either?? Anyway... Ali seems to be disregarded a lot these days by boxing experts. He only seems to be revered by the 'general public'. Strange that....
I was tossing up between the greatest and the pound for pound king I only went SRR way because I once watched an interview with ALI
And he said pound for pound ROBINSON was the best ever and that he was the greatest heavyweight ever.......

Willie Pep was a remarkable boxer. The best of his time. He got to be top 5 greatest boxer of all time imo. He got to be.Seamus wrote:What the heck, let's keep the salute to Pep going.
This monster won 230 fights! People don't know the magnitude of a boxer winning so many fights like he did. That's amazing.

Benitez must have had wonderful talent and skill to be a world champion at 17 years old - its kind of like those pianists that are almost supernaturally inclined to the instrument and can play far beyond their years.

Right on the money, bro! The Hands of Stone was a complete fighter. A versatile boxer that could fight inside, outside and counterpunch at any given angle. In his prime, he was fun to watch. The best fighter of my lifetime!FrozenMixedVegtables wrote:Duran had the most complete skillset ever imo
I've always been amazed by Jose Napoles skills
Re: Most Skillfull Fighter Of Alltime ?
Though he was a complete fighter I don't think he was the most skilful ever, I've seen Duran bouts where he relies on his power and not on placement or if he was stronger he wouldn't outthink or trick them, he'd out macho them. Duran was too temperamental to be seen as the most skilful ever, too much passion and too easily swayed.elmersalsa wrote:Right on the money, bro! The Hands of Stone was a complete fighter. Sugar Ray Robinson. But Roy Jones Jr didn't have many weaknesses.

Re: Most Skillfull Fighter Of Alltime ?
A big part of being skillful is adaptability. If you have all the skills, you should be able to adapt to different styles and strengths that your opponent has. No opponent can "be all wrong" for you if you are the best or right up there.

Not in the league of the aforementioned greats but I always found stevie Johnston very skillful.

In the same vein, I always enjoyed watching Harold Brazier - he was in a lower league than the greats but was clever and skilled.evrenb wrote:Not in the league of the aforementioned greats but I always found stevie Johnston very skillful.
