When was the last p4p top two fight?

Post by magwitch »

Lennox Lewis and Vitali would both have been operating somewhere close to the top...just throwing it in as an idea.
Roy Jones vs somebody... Was Oscar De La Hoya ever regarded as the pound for pound best? Mayweather vs De La Hoya?
Somebody can probably tell us...

You lost all credibility you may have ever possessed when you put p4p top two and then Lennox and Vitali in the post.

:oo Vitali was absolutely nowhere near anyone's P4P lists when he fought Lewis

I know he wasn't sugar ray leonard and but I thought he was an unbeaten fighter at the time, who only Lewis could compete with , that's why I suggested him and just to start to brainstorm! Sorry

I can get by without your respect, don't worry. Like I said up there - the subject interests me - and I thought someone might be able to tell me the answer - I notice that an answer was lacking from your post.
Damn losing my credibility. Sh*t! :(

This is more like what I was hoping for! Or possibly something involving Shane Mosely was, and fought, quite a few fighters near the p4p pinnacle, I'd have thought.

Good one. That might be it.

When will be the next time it'll happen. The approaching big fight would've been it a few years ago but not now.

Toney vs Jones? Fairly sure both were ranked highly.

What about when Mosely fought DeLa Hoya? Were the two of them not near the top at that time?

Great question... hard to answer, although the Chavez V sweet Pea is a good shout.

My timings my be slightly off but I am guessing RJJ was p4p for 9 years from beating Toney in '94 to beating Ruiz in '03 and he never fought a number 2 guy.

Barrera v Morales must have been close when they fought. Certainly top 5 p4p?

Had a quick look at The Ring year end ratings...

Pac and JMM were one and two in 2008
Floyd and Pac 1 and 2 in 2006/7/9/11/12
RJJ and Hop 1 and 2 and vice versa in 2002/3
Hop v Shane 2 and 1 in 2001
Shane v Tito 1 and 2 in 2000

1990 to 1993 Chavez and Pernel were top 2

Of course this was at the end of the year so mid year scenarios could have been different. But those are the years a sensible P4P 1 and 2 could have happened ( the weights were close enough)

So Jmm v Pac in 2008 could have been and Chavez v Pernell 1993 was a 1 and 2 P4P.

I say could have been for Pac v JMM because it depends at what point Floyd "retired" :))

Playing devils advocate here MW, but do you think Aaron Pryor was ahead of either of the aforementioned in early 1985?? What about Michael Spinks?? Both had pretty impressive resumes at that point.

Good point knockout, maybe #2 Pryor - assuming he hadn't imploded by then - Hagler was #1, and whoever won Hagler Hearns was surely P4P 1.

Great research there :salut:

I was wondering about Barrera V Erik but like you I end up saying top 5 or something like that! Was Barrera never any higher than that? Or Morales for all I know? I can't remember who won their 1-2-3 off the top of my head.

I hadn't realised JCC was ranked the premier, or second best boxer in the world for 3 years. Just before my time. Would Mike Tyson's chokey have been a factor in that?
