have you ever been a fan of boxer that you defend and can lose sight of common sense??

Me it has to be Khan ... I get so defensive i just cant help it... so much so I get branded a stooge by an elder which I presume is not a term of endearment lol

do you or have you defended a boxer that can make you look like a bit of a STOOGE?

I try to be as rational as one can be even with the guys I'm bigger fans of (namely Michigan fighters & Cuban amateur program fighters), but I suppose I did get a lil outside the bounds of reality about Jorge Luis Gonzalez.

He was a 1990's HW if anyone doesn't know. He came outta the Cuban system which I highly respect. Was 220-13 as an amateur. He beat Lennox (believe they split 2 fights), Riddick, & Tyrell Biggs as an amteur & if not for Cuba boycotting the 84 & 88 Olympics he surely coulda had a medal or two in his possession. Did the Erislandy/Guillermo thing in 1991 & turned pro. Thinking about it now he might actually be the John L Sullivan or James Figg of escaping Cuba to pursue pro boxing.

Based on that amateur pedigree, going 23-0 (22) as a pro & him just being a big ass hard hitting mfer I thought for sure Riddick Bowe vs Jorge was gonna be like Riddick vs Evander or just epic on its own instead of a one side ass beating lol. And then after that when Jorge was pretty much KTFO by every fringe prospect he fought that still came as a surprise to me to some degree.

Ha ha remember thinking the exact same thing fantastic pedigree, big and athletic , good skills/power and loads of attitude and spite got me thinking he would rule in a still competitive heavyweight division, can't believe how far off the mark I was, think its pretty clear now that most Cubans don't have the mental strength needed to succeed as a pro IMO.

I wouldn't go that fair. I think Guillermo has showed himself to be a phenom & Erislandy & Yuri are still world class guys even if they aren't the #1 guys in their divisions, which is no small feat. And there are numerous pro Cubans these days who are doing a solid job of representing themselves in boxing at all levels (keep an eye on Marcos Forestal who I think will end up being "the next" big Cuban we talk about).

I do think there is a structure in Cuba & in the Cuban boxing program that is impossible to duplicate outside of Cuba & when all the reins are taken off of you, your same motivation & mindset could be a hard thing to maintain. Some have done it to high enough degrees to be among the world class guys in a division though.

I can be rational most of the time but for some reason i wont have a bad word said about Khan, and it gets worse when someone dares to beat Khan.

ohhhh the resentment and excuses are plentiful. The worse part is there arent that many Khan lovers on here, which tends to make me stick out like broner crying after he got beat

Obviously for me it's Golovkin. I simply see the skills that he possesses and know that if he were matched up with higher tier fighters he would still prevail, but for some people that is not enough and I totally understand.

I get defensive when people rip Calzaghe because I do believe that he tried to make some blockbuster fights and that it wasn't totally his fault that some of those fights fell through. I do believe that he had HOF skills and no amount of counter arguments can dissuade me from that belief.

Errol Christie for me, I don't know why but I always liked him and tried to gloss over his shortcomings in the ring. Something which became harder to do the longer his career went on but I still tried to do it. Actually, come to think of it I do know why, I saw one of his early fights and was very impressed.

How can you mention Jorge Luis Gonzalez without mentioning his hair?? That's all I remember about him! It was a classic.

I'm the same with Joe, mainly because at the end of the Kessler fight he looked straight at me and pointed his glove at me (obviously acknowledging he heard and took my screaming advice that won him the fight).

It's funny but i think that we all do this in some capacity and i think that factor has a lot to do with some decisions that are made by these judges. When i'm watching a big fight, my eyes are focused on the guy i'm rooting for. When watching, you can't watch them both at the same time, it's impossible. I may have a lot of time on my hands now that i think of it but I watched the Charlo vs. Martyrosan fight twice the other day. One time watching Marty and the other focused on Charlo. And I came up with two different opinions of who won the fight after. I think Marty edged it out but it just goes to show how tough this sport is to score and i really think that there's a better idea out there for scoring but no one has thought of it yet.

One thing that bothers me is that some judges score for ring generalship, some don't. Some score more for boxers pushing the action and not for fighters that are backing up. Some count body shots as effective punches and some don't considerate it a scoring punch. This shouldn't be THAT subjective. This isn't figure skating or a dance off. Judges need to use the same criteria and give the same weights to the results in the ring.

Not a boxer but I'm that way with Isiah Thomas. He can do no wrong in my book. I always get into debates over the best PG of all time, Isiah or Magic. It's Zeke hand down! I'm that way with the whole Bad Boys team but especially Isiah.
