Re: Khan v Algieri official
Disappointing. The Broner fight would've been a good one and I'd be up for that. Algieri? That's a very flat fight.
Khan says that he won't fight Brook and that Kell is not big enough, they are differnt levels of career and blah blah.
The he fights Algieri whose world level career consists of a very close decision against Provodnikov after being put over, and being put over 6 times and not winning or trying to win a round against Pac.
Hmmmmmm

I've heard it all now... Show Pony? He won an Olympic medal at 17, cleaned out the juniors from the age of 12 and went on to win a world title... Dropped Maidana, stood up to his onslaught, shutout Devon, etc yet now he's getting compared to a kid who does kick ups? Leave the forum, pal!
Re: Khan v Algieri official
Algieri...Yaaaaawn. Just a ticking over fight, Khan still hoping for Mayweather or Pacman. Obviously shit scared of Brook, which we knew all along. Brook has a lot of things Khan doesn't like, decent enough speed and a powerful dig. Khan just playing it really safe waiting and hoping for his superfight.

I do not see a SUPER FIGHT in Kahn's near future. Pac and Floyd are making so much money on thisTheCobra wrote:Algieri...Yaaaaawn. fight that they are setting up their retirement.
If Pac wins he will rematch Floyd.
If Floyd wins he will have one more fight in September. Kahn will not have time to train because of Ramadan.
Where does that leave Kahn????
No where that's where. The guy has bought into his own delusional fantasy that he is #3 P4P.
Kahn will be sitting on the side lines watching the other contenders move ahead of himself.
Eventually he will have to fight a Brook or a Thurman.

Re: Khan v Algieri official
To defend Khan for a second: one more loss is going to seriously damage his career, and he might never be able to return to a shot of being an elite fighter in mega fights -- a shot which he has now. Therefore, if he is going to lose a fight, it really has to be in such a big money mega fight, so he can secure his future. Further, the prospect of losing against a Mayweather or Pacquaio is worth it for the absolute superstardom that would await him if he by chance won.
Brook, alas, just isn't up there with those names yet. He can't provide either the money or the potential reputational reward to compensate Khan for the risks he'd take at this stage of his career.
Given boxers risk their lives every time they step into the ring, I don't begrudge them working their careers to maximise their earnings. What I do begrudge is the assumption of some (I'm looking at you, Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather) that it won't affect our view of their legacy or historical standing. One needs to take risks, overcome difficulty, and face serious class in order to build a proper legacy.
Meantime, if Brook keeps winning, keeps building his fan base and recognition in Britain, the fight will happen, because the money will be too big for it to not.

You make a few good points. But in Khan's defence again, Algieri fight still better than no no Dan!Carbo wrote:To defend Khan for a second: one more loss is going to seriously damage his career, and he might never be able to return to a shot of being an elite fighter in mega fights -- a shot which he has now. Who has Brook fought who is worth a mention other than Porter?
Re: Khan v Algieri official
Can Algieri punch and is he any danger whatsoever (sic)?
Why did he get a shot at the p4p number two if he's not done anything of note?
On the point someone made of Devon Alexander not being a threat, I strongly disagree. There's a threat that he boxes your head off and serves you up another 'L'. That was a good win.
Khan has come unstuck in the past where no danger was foreseen. Personally I would say screw Mayweather. Concentrate on yourself. At the end of this year do you want to look back on a win over Algieri or a win over Brook. A stadium PPV fight with Brook would make each man a good couple of million, win OR lose. Beat Algieri and Mr Mayweather will still do whatever he wants. Fight Kell Brook at Wembley for the IBF title and whatever Khan holds.

Re: Khan v Algieri official
I think it's clear that a fight in the UK versus Brook is potentially very big indeed and Khan could get £5m easy for doing that and I'm sure Hearn would guarantee him that - what's he gona get for Algieri, no more than £1m I bet.
So therefore it's not about money for Khan it's about avoiding the risk of losing a bigger payday in the future by keeping it ticking over rather than take on someone like Brook who could end him.

Re: Khan v Algieri official
For the average sports fan in the US, Algieri is a bigger fight than Brook. They don't know either but if you say 'Algieri went the distance with Pac-Man' they'll tune in.
Brook means nothing over here. After a few more wins, he might. Khan v Brook ain't that big yet. Brook being a belt holder means nothing anymore. There's over 100 of them. And that's just the WBA!
Khan v Algieri will sell to the US public. And that's a very large chunk of Khans market.
Boxing is a business. This is a business decision.

Brook beat Porter in America. I'd think that was more impressive than losing incredibly widely against Pacquiao.Taansend wrote:For the average sports fan in the US, Algieri is a bigger fight than Brook. They don't know either but if you say 'Algieri went the distance with Pac-Man' they'll tune in.

is no one giving algieri a chance? he's tall, might outweigh khan,is quite fast and mobile and he does throw a nice right hand.khan might suit him more. and lets face it paq and prov are far more durable, tough , and hard to wear down than khan is.

You're an expert, and experts aren't who makes a fight sell -- it's the people at the margin between liking the sport and being a fan.Horse wrote:Brook beat Porter in America. So your point, while probably valid, is also probably irrelevant.
Re: Khan v Algieri official
Yes, but wasn't Brook vs Porter on American television? Brook must've improved his reputation in America with that win.Carbo wrote:You're an expert, and experts aren't who makes a fight sell -- it's the people at the margin between liking the sport and being a fan.

I don't see why Algieri would be more respected by fans even in America. He just got whooped badly.

I understand, but do you think that that fight would have been on the radar of any marginal fan?Horse wrote:Yes, but wasn't Brook vs Porter on American television? Boxing fans would have taken note, and know Brook is a leading fighter at 147. But it won't make a big money or big coverage fight -- and that's what Khan needs now to justify taking a big risk of losing.
If he stays unbeaten, he could be a serious contender to fight the winner of Mayweather-Pacquiao. If I were his manager, I'd try to at least see how the landscape looks after that fight.
Re: Khan v Algieri official
Would a marginal fan be excited by Algieri? I doubt it.Carbo wrote:I understand, but do you think that that fight would have been on the radar of any marginal fan?
Brook vs Khan is already a big money fight.Carbo wrote:Boxing fans would have taken note, and know Brook is a leading fighter at 147. But it won't make a big money or big coverage fight -- and that's what Khan needs now to justify taking a big risk of losing.
He may well make more money against Brook than he would against Mayweather or Pacquiao in fights that may never happen.
If he actually beats someone good like Brook, Bradley, Marquez, Thurman or even Porter or Maidana: then he makes a shot at the winner of Mayweather vs Pacquiao more likely and perhaps increases his slice of the pie.Carbo wrote:If he stays unbeaten, he could be a serious contender to fight the winner of Mayweather-Pacquiao. Re: Khan v Algieri official
I suspect that given Algieri has a recent fight against a crossover household name, yes.Horse wrote:Would a marginal fan be excited by Algieri? I doubt it.
Indeed, but not considerably more than Mayweather of Pacquaio might be, and it isn't going to significantly raise his profile in the way a fight against one of those two would.Horse wrote:Brook vs Khan is already a big money fight.
Big risk for not a great deal of improvement of the current situation.Horse wrote:If he actually beats someone good like Brook, Bradley, Marquez, Thurman or even Porter or Maidana: then he makes a shot at the winner of Mayweather vs Pacquiao more likely and perhaps increases his slice of the pie.
The fight against Brook will always be there, and will only build in money and prestige terms by letting it cook for a while.
Re: Khan v Algieri official
But he was beaten with ease.Carbo wrote:I suspect that given Algieri has a recent fight against a crossover household name, yes.
Just how stupid do you think the American public are?

Re: Khan v Algieri official
How much would Kahn make fighting Mayweather?
Canelo was only guaranteed $5 million plus a percentage of ppv sales.
Bringing his total to $12 million.
I have a hard time believing Kahn has the star appeal of Canelo. So I would assume the money would be less.
I think the smart money would be to take on Brook for the reported $8 million he has been offered.

Re: Khan v Algieri official
Algieri probably does have the slightly bigger profile in US just about with his win over Provodnikov, but he's not undefeated, he's not a belt holder and he's not on a roll of good wins like Brook is - including beating Porter in his own back yard.
I think as Froch vs Groves proved, it doesn't have to ALL be about America anyway, we can have big super fights over here in the UK and we're pretty good at them with the hype and marketing side - making big events with big crowds and big paydays. Khan could be a part of that against Brook and make a career high payday, so to me there's no other excuse for it - he's just on the avoid.

Does Kahn have the mass appeal for a ppv as Canelo does?
Does Kahn really stand to make as much money as Canelo?
