Never made a good pro? Just curios who really looked like to have all the promise but for one reason or another failed in the pro ranks

I will start with an easy one Harrison

Audley can't fairly be described as not being a good pro. He was good, just not exceptional.

Is it fair to list the Cubans such as Stevenson and Savon - the reason being a bloke in a funny hat with a fat cigar?

There are very few top amateurs who don't at least make 'good' pros. There are plenty that don't live up to their amateur pedegrees: Henry Tillman and Jorge Luis Gonzalez would be two examples.

Stevenson would have beat them all, just like Big George says in this tribute.

I've seen Stevenson's height listed from 6' 3" to 6' 5" but he looked taller than John Tate so must have been closer to 6' 5". If so, that means he might have made the first really skilled champ of that size, years before Bowe, Lewis and the like.

Eiji Morioka-Won an Olympic Bronze in 1964 then went 6-4 in the pros. Set up a gym before he passed away which is said to have one of the best prospects working there.

Serafim Todorov-Olympic silver medal winner in 1996 (famously beating Mayweather) and a winner of copious other amateur medals...went 5-1 in the professional ranks.

György Mizsei-Won bronze at 2 Euros and the 1992 Olympics (losing to a brilliant Cuban). Retired with a record of 1-1 then had a comeback, which saw him moving his record on to 2-1-1. His son has become popular over here with bouts against the likes of Crolla, Matthews, Flanagan, Saunders and Harrison.

I think the Americans listed him shorter than he was sometimes to score some sort of political blow, believe it or not. He was 6'5" all day and twice on Sunday. Ali had hunched up some by '96 but Teofilo loomed large. Photos can be deceptive due to perspective but you'll not find a picture of Stevenson where he looks like a 6'3" guy. Savon is even taller.

Joe Gallagher trained a lad who won 2 national schoolboy titles at same time as Ricky Hatton, and he was reckoned to be at least as good as Hatton, in fact they boxed an exhibition bout in Germany (I think) and he looked to have the edge. You wonder what sort of career he could have had if he hadn't made some wrong choices.

Ooooh a couple of obvious ones, Jeffries (hand injuries) and Stalker (not suited to pros)?

Solis had a much better pro career than Audley.

Another Cuban, Yan Barthelemy. Don't want to be harsh but he's been a complete flop as a professional given his amateur credentials.

Recent UK names Frankie Gavin, Joe Murray and Tony Docherty. Not saying any were expected to go through the world scene like a red hot knife through butter, but i thought all would do significantly better than they did.

Tyrell Biggs springs to mind, and remember Abudullev (sp) - stellar amateur that beat cotto then lost to him in pro game and it never really worked.

Too many cubans to mention, for obvious reasons.

Adrian Elliott, he was something like a four time ABA super heavyweight champion who had a few and lost to Hughroy Currie (I think - no shame in losing to Currie who was a good fighter).

John Hyland, Tony Mulholland - a fair few Scouse amateur stand outs never made their mark the same in the pro's.

Bobby Wells - the Bronze Bomber who won said colour medal in the 1984 olympics but was a so-so pro.

There are loads really.

For me cos of the fight night series and I started boxing watching him, Errol Christie. All them amateur titles, Aba senior title at 18...Beat a German in Berlin for Euro junior title and went unbeaten in 73 (I think).i find this all the more extraordinary as a lot of these wins will have been against local lads in backwater wmc's who never saw a black face in their community! So smooth and easy on the eye and could knock a house down. Loved Errol. Hounorable mentions from this era George Collins, boy wonder and Mark Breland , even tho he won a world title it was predicted with his frame he would be a multi wt champ. Loads of kids won senior abas and took on journeyman role..aforementioned Alan Temple and the Ramseys/Dentons spring to mind.

Brian Hughes said Craig Dermody was as good as he's seen. Seen countless class amateurs over the years who never did much. It was a different sport... Things have changed though with the head guard going, and the points scoring. 3 round pro wars most of them now.

Liverpool's Neil Perkins did well as an amateur, world bronze.

6-0 as a professional but not afforded much coverage so far.

Hopefully he gets a few more outings under his belt in the next 12 months and into a interesting domestic fight with a Beefy Smith/ Brian Rose type fighter.

Tidy boxer.

Tony Adams blitzed his way to the ABA light-welterweight title at Wembley in 1982, destroying George Gilbody in under a minute, then completely bottomed out in the pros under Terry Lawless. He even lost his power.
