Re: Jimmy Ellis vs Ernie Terrell...
Tough fight for Ellis. Terrell was so tall with a long reach, and was a difficult guy to fight. I would probably be rooting for Ellis, but if I had to bet on the fight, I would probably put my money on Terrell.
Re: Jimmy Ellis vs Ernie Terrell...
Both good boxers. Terrell was hard to fight and beat in his prime. Would say Jimmy was probably the harder puncher but Ernie fought tall, and smart... Somewhat of a precursor for Vitali Klitschko. Ernie on points.

Hello Evren,
I agree with your hypothesis on this fight I can see a long frustrating night with Jimmy trying to get inside of Terrell's reach to work his body and Terrell staying behind his jab and doing his best to nullify Jimmy's attempts with clinching tactics. I see it going the distance with jimmy having some good moments however not having enough to bring down the Bigger Terrell. Terrell by Majority Decision
Sincerely
Mikey Capp

Too bad that the Ellis-Cooper fight never came off. That would have been an interesting match up. I guess that the BBC would not sanction the fight for some reason (I heard that they were affiliated with the WBC). Then I guess that Cooper hurt his knee. Ellis was then going to fight Greg Peralta in Argentina, but that fight never happened (poor ticket sales I hear). Then, Joe Frazier.
I guess that Ellis never got to make that much money from being WBA champ. Too bad.
Anyway, Ellis beat Quarry, and Quarry beat Spencer, and Spencer beat Terrell, for whatever that's worth.

Re: Jimmy Ellis vs Ernie Terrell...
I just watched the Ali/Terrell fight again.
And before I watched it, I did agree with the majority opinion that Terrell would sort of "Klitschko" his way to a win.
But now I'm more doubtful. Jimmy would have been much smaller, but if he could have eluded Ernie the way Ali did, he would have a chance to outpoint him. Jimmy was fast, and pretty elusive.
Here is an edited version showing every meaningful punch that took place in that fight, and Ali just shredded the man in a very one sided affair. Now I'm certain Jimmy would not have that sort of success, but he might be able to pull off a close decision. In fact I think that's the outcome I would bet on.

I happen to agree with this minority viewpoint.BoxBuzz wrote:I just watched the Ali/Terrell fight again.

Especially with Dundee in his corner, I think the slick, mobile with good power Jimmy Ellis finds a path to victory.

In defense of Ernie, he was most likely starting the decline when Spencer beat him. I have to think there were repercussions from the severe beating Ali gave Ernie less than a year before. I watched that Spencer-Terrell fight live on TV and Ernie looked sluggish from the get-go. I'm not sure his heart was in the fight game at that point.
As far as Cooper-Ellis goes, Jimmy would have slaughtered '68-'69 'Enery. (see Patterson-Cooper '66 for a glimpse of how Cooper-Ellis would have played out)
Re: Jimmy Ellis vs Ernie Terrell...
Good point about Dundee being in Ellis' corner. He could always seem to come up with some good fight strategy. Also about Terrell being on the decline when he fought Spencer.
I did see the Patterson-Cooper fight and agree that Ellis probably would have beaten him too.

Re: Jimmy Ellis vs Ernie Terrell...
I would lean towards Ellis winning a fairly close decision. For a while, Terrell was fighting at a high level and would have been tough to beat.
The fight could have turned out similar to Terrell-Machen, which was an ugly fight. Terrell managed to win that one.

2 fighters who had al the tools physically, but I don't know if they wanted it if it went into the trenches. There was a good point that Dundee may have coaxed a win from Ellis but iv'e always thought that Terrell could have done better everytime he fought.Rubin Carter said in his book that ellis run away from him the whole fight.Anyone for a rematch ater a close debatable decision.Would anyone have paid to see them fight twice. Not me...
