I'd put him top 3 all time. Win over Joe Gans and draw with Joe Walcott (disputed most think he won) are up there, his wins over Harry Wills are simply incredible. Wills said he would have been almost unbeatable in his prime. His KO over Tiger Flowers while blind is stupendous. Never see a fighter like him again.

The book on him is superb.

I have him rated at #3 all-time pound per pound as well. What a fighter. Incredible fighter. When you look at his ledger and the fights that he had from welterweight to heavyweight, and still won the majority of them, is very great to behold. I only have the greats Henry Armstrong and Sugar Ray Robinson above him. Nobody else after those two but Langford.

As a top 100 great puncher, I have him rated at #4, behind Joe Louis, Jimmy Wilde and Archie Moore.

He seemed to be at his most potent at 180lbs although he must have been some machine as a welter and middle.

When fighting heavyweights Langford's best weight was between 175 and 185. His best wins were probably kayos of Joe Jeannette, Sam McVea, Harry Wills, Jeff Clark and Gunboat Smith.

My grandad would always speak of him and jack Johnson. Can always remember him saying how avoided Langford was!
