jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
first of all i'd like to say that jamie wilson himself done all he could, he tried his best but stevie wonder could see last night that jamie was so far out of his depth it was scary. when i first heard that he would be on i couldnt believe it!! he has looked bang average in all his bouts and i cant get my head round how on earth he got his chance after 5 bouts against nobodies.
i understand jamies reasons for taking the bout but where were the people looking out for him? his manager tommy gilmour has thrown him to the wolves. he has been in the game a very long time and must have known his charge was up against it. since he matches him and knows the level of opponents he has boxed so far.
but imo most of the blame must fall at his coach. chris mcadam take a bow because last night could have ruined jamie wilsons career. kris works with him day in day out and when that call came from tommy it should have been his decision to say no!!!! he has been a coach and boxed at profesional levels, he must have known that jamie was far from ready for last night after beating 5 nobodies.
if i was jamie wilson then after last night i would seriously be considering a change of coach and management. i dont know how long his management deal with tommy is so that might be a hard one but his first call monday should be to get rid of chris mcadam because he obviously doesnt care about jamie in the slightest. there is so much better coaches out there that would try do better for him and not throw him to the wolves.
billy nelson, terry mccormack, peter harrison, steve maguire, paul weir would all be better for him and im positive that they wouldnt throw there fighter under the bus for 10%!!! lol

He lost. I don't think he's ruined his career.

he didnt just lose though de he!!!! he was broken down and retired on his stool after a beating, if that was your son would you be happy that after 5 bouts your son was thrown in to get imbarassed on tv. jamie looked like a novice fighter and should have been matched appropriatly not put in a fight he had no real chance of winning.Horse wrote:He lost. look at the end of the fight jamie looked distressed in the corner and that could leave longterm damage and could ruin his career, hope not but can you really say that it was smart management or smart on the part of his coach?

If he was my son: then I'd be proud that he'd fought for the Commonwealth title on television and had put up an entertaining fight.boxing crazy wrote:he didnt just lose though de he!!!! he was broken down and retired on his stool after a beating, if that was your son would you be happy that after 5 bouts your son was thrown in to get imbarassed on tv. jamie looked like a novice fighter and should have been matched appropriatly not put in a fight he had no real chance of winning.

I don't think he was embarrassed, it was just too early for him.
Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
He's got plenty of guts but I think the OP is right, he was thrown to the wolves, he got a bit of a beating but can lick his wounds and come again, he needs 12-18 months of hard gym graft and a touch more experience but he definitely didn't disgrace himself. I've seen famous, highly ranked and very well paid boxers show far less heart then Jamie.

your telling me that you would be happy for your son just to fight for the commonwealth belt on tv but you admit it was too early? like i said stevie wonder could have seen that jamie wasnt prepared for that fight. only time will tell who is right but if my son turned pro then i would be looking elsewhere for a manager or coach because my sons health is more important than just fighting for teh title on tv. i would want to have faith that they were looking after his interests and not just throwing him in before he was ready to actually put up a fight with a chance to actually win the title fight.Horse wrote:If he was my son: then I'd be proud that he'd fought for the Commonwealth title on television and had put up an entertaining fight.boxing crazy wrote:he didnt just lose though de he!!!! he was broken down and retired on his stool after a beating, if that was your son would you be happy that after 5 bouts your son was thrown in to get imbarassed on tv. jamie looked like a novice fighter and should have been matched appropriatly not put in a fight he had no real chance of winning.

He was pulled out before he took too much damage.boxing crazy wrote:your telling me that you would be happy for your son just to fight for the commonwealth belt on tv but you admit it was too early? like i said stevie wonder could have seen that jamie wasnt prepared for that fight. only time will tell who is right but if my son turned pro then i would be looking elsewhere for a manager or coach because my sons health is more important than just fighting for teh title on tv. i would want to have faith that they were looking after his interests and not just throwing him in before he was ready to actually put up a fight with a chance to actually win the title fight.
You are too protective. He should gain confidence from that, not lose it.
Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
I have a mate who is an ex pro who hasn't a good word to say about Tommy Gilmour. He says he is a self praising twat! End of the day the boy got beaten but he'll be a better fighter if he manages to come back from the defeat.
Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
To be fair - both Wilson and Nelson have followed the current career model. Both had only previously faced opponents with big losing records.
Nelson was the best opponent that Wilson had faced as a pro, but equally Wilson was the best opponent that Nelson has faced.

Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
I don't quite understand how you can fight for a title haven not fought over more than 8 rounds but I would presume it's due to lack of fighters around at that weight.
I get the risk, there was nothing on Nelson's record to say he was a world beater. It was probably the biggest payday for the lad and i'm sure he wanted the fight. As for Gilmour, it looked to me like he was the guy who pulled him out which was the right decision.

Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
Not the worst match making I have seen. Wouldnt descibe Nelson as a wolf exactly. Maybe a sort of tame fox or perhaps a feral cat ? Only had one stoppage win going in, and the main difference I geuss was that he done a couple of ten rounders, but even then Wilson had done an 8 rounder.
I would say neither were really ready for this level tbh but it is the state of the game. Sometimes on paper an ok match can turn out one sided, and going into this I dont think it screamed mismatch.
Bottom line, hard old game.

Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
you might be right about that but why didnt chris mcadam see the distress his boxer was in before tommy jumped up? anthony nelson had won the english title which is a hard title to win, he was also a very good amateur at featherweight. i understand the risks sometimes but a young 21 year old against a more experienced 29 year old man imo wasnt good matchmaking. i hope jamie recovers and he can put this to a learning experience but he looked so shocked in the corner when he returned i think he might be mentally scarred going forward.broomy7s wrote:I don't quite understand how you can fight for a title haven not fought over more than 8 rounds but I would presume it's due to lack of fighters around at that weight.

Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
Tommy is Jamie's manager and has proberly put it to Jamie's team and they have accepted,
Tommy doesn't see him in the gym and is blameless and looks to me as if he stopped the fight, I see jamie as a very nice boy and to be honest as brave as he was he wasn't ready, he looked really distressed in the corner at end of the round and properly exhausted, I knew jamie was tough though but sometimes people have to stand up and protect him, hell come back stronger, I don't think jamie trains full time and that was the difference, Jamie doesn't touch alcohol but I can't really say he's ever done a proper camp, he was far to light when he weighed in also which worried me

Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
I think the biggest difference was fitness. Wilsons style is a hard style to maintain round after round, a lot of power shots, a lot of ducking and rolling. Nelson may not have been a lot fitter but his style allowed him to conserve a lot more energy. Thats the first I have ever seen Wilson but I personally think he will need to make adjustments to how he fights if he intends to hang around in 10-12 rounders. It could be seen in the first couple of rounds that the pace was fast, was just a case of who would gas first.
Having saying that, i totally disagree with anyone who said he embarassed himself. He was in the fight until he gassed, showed a lot of heart and can become a better fighter for his experiences on the night.

i didnt mean that jamie embarassed himself but imo the team embarassed him. jamie did exactly what any fighter would do and went out and gave it a go, he never gave up. my problem is with the team surrounding him tbh!!!! i understand what you said jamiem about tommy not seeing him in the gym but he has seen him box against low quality oposition and thought it would be a good idea to take the fight on short notice but there is no excuse for chris mcadam imo he is the one who spends hours with jamie and has been coaching for 15 + years at amateur and pro levels. i bet he wouldnt have thrown his son in to just fight for the commonwealth title.
jamiem do you think chris mcadam would take a fight with ronnie with his richard barclay? that would be an interesting fight

I am quite surprised the BBBoC permitted this TBH.
Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
Jamie has a style where he just has a tear up and Tommy has always seen him come out on top, his last fight he looked so strong, I think it was more the weight,
As for richard Barclay not a chance, I hope
I come across ok here but my view on ronnie is he's miles above barcley and Mcrory and domestic scottish level but he's came up short at british level, a split v troy and a dodgy one with craig evans nothing to be to fussed about, barcley beaten by Mcrory who was in turn schooled by podusovs, I know style make fights but ronnie as Iv said in most fights at that level he comes on so strong later on, where wilson faded ronnie comes on strong, pudosuvs was all over olace last 3 rounds v ronnie and was dropped twice that the referee missed, these fights could be made and it wouldn't be ronnie, David mcallister or Tommy preventing it:)

Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
I think Jamie really had to take this fight. Was the only way to really know where he was at. Couple of factors here that were against him. 3 week training camp against a 12 week for Nelson. Jamie showed some real quality rounds 3 and 4 can see a very nice jab and body shots. He shifts his feet well to get them off. Maybe needs to sit down on them more and just slow down a little and pick his shots. I don't know Jamies corner but they did look clueless and the fact Tommy had to get up on the ring says it all. Well done to Tommy. Jamie showed enough and I think this is the best learning experience he will ever have. I would like to see all Dundee fighters training together. They all have to travel to train maybe inbetween days they could work together really push each other on.. A busy gym is a healthy gym
Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
Thrown to the wolves?
In flyweight terms, he really wasent . Title fights come quicker, purely down to the lack of depth in the division.
Folk moan about fighters not being tested and being fed Journeyman, then one gets a title shot he gets fed to the wolves... Jamie should be applauded and fair enough it didnt work well for him, but he will be richer for the experience and is young enough to come again.

What your all forgetting is Jamie when offered the fight could have said no, he never he lost and hopefully he learns from the experience
Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
If you get offered a title shot you have to take it, you may never get the chance again.

Although I don't agree with what the OP is saying, I have to totally disagree with your logic? You take a title fight because you may never get a shot again!! is rubbish, he is 21 and had only 45 fights and at Super Flyweight he would have definitely got the chance at the British/Commonwealth in the future had he kept winning and progressing.Coco wrote:If you get offered a title shot you have to take it, you may never get the chance again.
I totally understand why they took the fight for Jamie as others have said Anthony Nelson didn't seem a big puncher with 9 wins and only 1 ko. Jamie was also in the fight at times and with a bit more experience then he could have beat Nelson but Jamie looked very nervous and didn't box the way i have seen him in the past and it just highlighted his inexperience.

I'm sure that Jamie would have said yes regardless mate, do you know a fighter that would turn the chance down? Imo it was worth a punt and he should be applauded for taking the shot on short notice.billy nelson wrote:What your all forgetting is Jamie when offered the fight could have said no, he never he lost and hopefully he learns from the experience
Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
Funnily enough everyone whose commented so far has probably spoken with a grain of truth. Sad to say though I thought the young lad was thrashed from beginning to end and totally exhausted by the finish. I really hope I'm wrong but I don't thing it's mentally possible to recover from such an experience. I hope he makes me eat my words, but I don't think so.

Re: jamie wilson being thrown to the wolves!!!!!!
Nothing wrong with the fight,as has been mentioned already, the lighter weights lack depth so opportunites come quicker and seeing as he's the first Dundonian to fight for a major title that I'm aware of,its no certainty that he'll get another shot, look at Iain Butcher,he's still in limbo despite most feeling he beat Satchell
Nelson didn't have a wealth of experience himself and isn't a massive puncher so it was a great opportunity for Wilson who applied himself well and is now in the boxing publics conscience, he can come again no doubt
His biggest problem was his jerky jerky style which expanded a lot of needless energy when he wasn't in range,it was the first time I'd seen Jamie but someone above mentioned it wasn't his usual style so we can maybe put that down to the cameras and the whole occasion
Most importantly he just simply gassed ,,because he was giving Anthony some trouble until the 5th,and everyone at Sky were raving about his toughness so it shows he wasnt embarrassed, if the fight wasn't stopped when it was then maybe a bad KO beckoned but he lives to fight another day with a lot more credit and experience than he did before Saturday
