Not sure if this has been posted already so if so, apologies .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDSH8cXtFRQ
Re: Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte amateur fight
Cheers for that ! Wow what a small ring for two giants, and Joshua looked a proper novice then, when was that ?
Re: Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte amateur fight
Does anyone know for sure @ what stage of their careers this was ?

2009 - Dillian Whytes debut Anthony Joshua's 5th fight.
Re: Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte amateur fight
3 years later AJ won Olympic gold, that's quite staggering when you think about it.london wrote:2009 - Dillian Whytes debut Anthony Joshua's 5th fight.
Re: Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte amateur fight
very early days. only thing that worries me slightly about Joshua is his stamina. Skelton pressured him more than the rest but it wasnt that bad and the left hand started creeping down and coming back lazily. he needs to watch he doesnt get tagged with right hands over the top cos even if he has a good chin, its heavyweight boxing.
Re: Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte amateur fight
If anything that shows Joshua heart and toughness. He was a novice and battled to get through it. Good experience to ahve

Against an experienced fighter too, pretty sure Dillian should not have been fighting at novice level back then.jackukmma wrote:If anything that shows Joshua heart and toughness. He was a novice and battled to get through it. Good experience to ahve
Re: Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte amateur fight
When does whyte make his comeback?
Re: Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte amateur fight
IT WAS ANTHONY JOSHUA'S 3RD BOUT.

I heard it was his 5th bout.
It was Dillian Whytes 1st fight so knocking down Anthony Joshua and winning every round is a pretty impressive debut.

Do you know what? It's one of my pet hates when people say it's their first fight when they've had loads of experience in other codes. Some don't even declare it.london wrote:ERIC GUY wrote:IT WAS ANTHONY JOSHUA'S 3RD BOUT.

What's your point ? Whytes only 18 months older than Joshua and used to fight Muay Thai but I didn't see him kicking Joshua then again Joshua was supposedly a trained competeive athlete running 100 ms in under 11 seconds representing his county.
The real test will be to see what happens if they meet again in the pros. Will people be piping up saying oh AJ had 40 more amateur fights than Whyte etc ? I don't think so.

Re: Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte amateur fight
My point is nothing to do with those two. If someone's fought Muay Thai, K1, MMA... Then they have fight experience. It's like a Rugby player switching codes and pretending he's a complete novice. Joshua's running is irrelevant. I'm not favouring either, just something I see trainers do and it's wrong. And a Muay Thai guy still punches, that's silly. It's like saying me and Ronnie O'Sullivan would go into a game of pool even and he only had snooker experience.

Yep defo agreed. Also in light of dillian whytes suspension he may have had even more of an advantageDeserter wrote:Agreed.mickey1975 wrote:My point is nothing to do with those two. A bit silly your analogies however you cannot deny that AJs competitive athletics background would of helped massively with his boxing with all the strength, endurance, speed etc training he would of received and to run under 11 seconds at that age means he was clearly talented.
The only way we will see who'a progressed more is if they ever meet again in the pros.

Big Larry was a better sprinter... Look mate, you are obviously mates and want the fight, I think that ship has sailed...london wrote:mickey1975 wrote:My point is nothing to do with those two. I hope not but looking at Dillians recent tweets he doesn't seem that motivated so you maybe right.

IF we extend that logic then do we then ignore Saensak Muangsurin's boxing world record due to his Muay Thai stuff?mickey1975 wrote:My point is nothing to do with those two. Re: Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte amateur fight
Not really. Muangsurin was competing with high class boxers and everyone was fully aware of his Muay Thai background.Boxing Prospect wrote:IF we extend that logic then do we then ignore Saensak Muangsurin's boxing world record due to his Muay Thai stuff?mickey1975 wrote:My point is nothing to do with those two. The problem with Whyte and his am career is he should not have been competing at novice level given his fighting history. He should have gone straight in at open level. 'Ringers' like that can be dangerous.
Re: Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte amateur fight
His athletic background may have helped, but it's no comparison to having several kickboxing matches in which boxing skills not found in athletics and weightlifting are a significant part. If a random track and field athlete was selected and put in a boxing match against a random kick boxer, who would you put your money on?A bit silly your analogies however you cannot deny that AJs competitive athletics background would of helped massively with his boxing with all the strength, endurance, speed etc training he would of received and to run under 11 seconds at that age means he was clearly talented.
There is meant to be a novice division to ensure some degree of equanimity regarding the competitive experience each boxer has, and not accounting for competitive experience in sports where boxing skills are used is antithetical to that.
At the same time I don't think a kick boxing match is equivalent to a boxing match, so I'd favor counting each non-boxing bout and dividing it by some figure, perhaps 2 with uneven results rounded.

Here is Joshua being stopped by a Romanian named Mihai Nistor. I looked for this fight for a while and didn't realize that it has been online for several months. Let me preempt the screams of 'it was the amateurs!! It means nothing! fornicate you for posting this!' by saying that I'm posting so people like me who were curious about the fight and may not have seen it have a chance to do so. Many future pro stars were stopped in the amateurs, Joshua was very inexperienced compared to most international level amateurs, and he won a silver at the world championship later that year.

He's clearly hurt there, and it's a correct stoppage for the ams. All the same, he seems to take those shots leading to the stoppage fairly well, especially the first which looked to come from outside his line of sight.
Haven't watched the whole thing yet.
Re: Anthony Joshua vs Dillian Whyte amateur fight
Was that the only time Joshua was stopped in the amateurs?
