GGG?

Post by Stuarty »

I value the peoples opinions on here and I thought I would ask the question... How good do folk rate GGG? He is my fav international fighter and I rate him very highly. Exciting to watch and technically sound!

Is unquestionaly the man in the mw department at the moment (despite cotto holding lineal title)!
Seems to have everything, power, great footwork, good chin!
Is perhaps destined to be permanently swerved and avoided!!

He seems to have everything, however it's not the strongest division anymore, there is a you tube video with trainer Robert Garcia and he asks how would he do against Hopkins, Toney, Trinidad, Roy Jones etc. That's the problem I don't think there is anyone at MW who can even test him. I think to prove his true potential and become the P4P best hell have to step up and clean up the SM division.

GGG at middle weight, he's in a league of his own right now, without a doubt he's the best middleweight on the planet and as much as I would like to see him test the waters at super middleweight it' up to him entirely, if he wants to continue as he is, he'll just cement himself as one of the all time greats at middleweight but if he is successful at SMW he'll definitely be on the best pound for pound list easily.

I was impressed with his come forward work output against Murray. Hadn't seen him box before that. You need to be good defensively as well to walk down a man like Murray for 11 rounds too I'd suggest.

I think he's good, not great.

Suffering from a lack of good competition will actually harm him in the long run. Needs the likes of Andrade, Canelo, Charlo's or even a Trout to step up as all of them are better competition than is currently available at MW.

He could win mos fights at 168 but he really isn't a big enough man to be fighting some of the better fighters up there.

Great fighter but just lacking the resume just now, some solid wins but needs to beat a p4p'er or he'll never get mentioned with the likes of Hagler,Monzon and Hopkins and to be honest there's no one around MW at the moment who he can beat to get the credit, a win over Cotto will dismissed as nothing more than a mismatch against a faded WW

Cotto was not that fantastic at 154 which is most of the problem.

Destructive punch power and a good boxer.

I cant see anybody who will be able to touch him at middleweight for the next year or two. I think the lack of competition in the division will do him a disservice as he wont be able to prove how good he is, if he is that good. I think if he stepped up to super middle he wouldnt be as explosive, especially as he would give away a good couple of inches in height alone.

He may be the most physically gifted fighter in boxing right now - granite chin, perfect balance, strong, devastating power, excellent stamina. Whether his porous defence is a result of his gameplan (he has admitted before to changing his style during his pro career in order to be a more fan-friendly fighter) or simply a weakness that he has is another question. As has been said above, there doesn't seem to be enough talent at 154/160 to test him enough to find out just how good he is.

I would like to see him fight Cotto just so he can say he's cleaned out 160 and then try his luck at 168 - the real test will be whether his power and granite chin carry up the weights. If they do we might have something very special on our hands. But at 31 he doesn't have all day to find out.

I know a lot of people think Golovkin can only cement his legacy by moving up in weight but I'm going to be slightly unconventional and say, why does he need to?

He's just about cleared out the MW division now, has a massive KO ratio and has become unmissable for any boxing fan.

New challenges are always on the horizon(how big would a Canelo fight be?) in boxing and I'm sure the MW scene will look different in a year or two. He could be in some fantastic fights and win everyone by KO for the next 2-3 years. That'll be a test, the first man to do 12 with GGG...

In saying that though, my opinion is that Golovkin can move up to SMW and rule the roost there too. He'll be about for a good few years yet, even if the KO's dry up a little at the higher weight.

If he's to go down with the ATGs he will have to go up in weight. Not his fault that the division is as weak as it is but that's life.

I do think he'll move up in weight, can't see anyone but Ward or Froch giving him a test.

It's interesting how the Eastern Europeans are coming through - Golovkin, Kovalev all ready up there with Lomachenko, Usyk and Beterbiev on the fringes and I'm sure I'm forgetting someone.

Hopefully we get to see Kov v Beterbiev in 18 months or at least Beterbiev v Usyk at CW down the line. Although Golovkin was supposed to smash Kovalev in sparring, I don't think he can move up to LHW but possibly a catch-weight with Kovalev could potentially happen.

Obviously number one, and rightfully so. As BJS said he could take him and Eubank out on the same night.

I kinda agree why should ggg have to move up would be a relatively small smw (with big power mind)!
The great marvin hagler remained at mw for his illustrious career!

Hagler had the likes of Hearns,Duran and SRL to fight at the weight.

That is true, though they were all ww and Lmw who stepped up!
Hopefully fighters like andrade, canelo and Lara may do likewise

Golovkin is mustard

Nice breakdown analysis vid here highlighting his use of shifting - he is technically excellent as well as a monsterous puncher:

SMW also wasn't really established as a weight whilst Hagler was fighting, was it? Even if it was, I'm sure Hagler was one of those guys wishing for the return of 8 weight classes so wouldn't have wanted to go to SMW; he'd have to have gone to LHW out of pride where he'd be far too small.
