Except one of the losses is to GGG (who everybody lose to) and the other is a questionable SD.

Questionable doesn't make it a bad decision, it was a very close fight. The decision reasonably could have went either way, it happened to go to Barker.

Geale is 2-2 in his last four, beating 2 C-level fighters(if that), losing to somebody that wasn't very good to begin with and quitting on GGG.

He's still a solid middleweight but he's vulnerable. It's easy to see why the Cotto camp is interested in him.

If geale decides to box I believe he wins his bout. Geale has made it clear he wants another fight with Ggg and I believe a victory here will give him that.

Is this really happening?! Jesus, Geale is FINISHED. Cotto clobbers him. I know Cotto is petrified of actually fighting a real opponent like GGG or Canelo but this is just ridiculous.

You cannot be serious, McEnroe. He's not even a better "boxer" than Cotto. Shocked there are several ppl on here who actually thinks Geale would win this fight. Seriously ridiculous. Get bent.

For the sport, I'd rather see GGG vs Cotto, but short of that happening, I'd be happy to see Cotto defend his middleweight title against a legitimate middleweight contender. Being an Aussie, I'd love to see Geale get another shot at the world title - I'd give him a shot of beating any middleweight today apart from GGG.

How is Geale finished? Apart from the GGG fight, he's just lost two disputable split decisions in 'world title' fights. In his most recent outing, he widely outpointed Jarrod Fletcher, who while not world class, is a solid domestic-level boxer. I haven't seen any evidence of decline - he has always been a B-level fighter and still is.

Cotto, on the other hand, was an A-level welterweight who looked great in beating an out-of-his-depth Rodriguez and an old and creaky Sergio Martinez. He is very small for the middleweight division and we really don't yet know whether he can beat a fit, world class middleweight like Geale.

I think it's an intriguing matchup. They are both 34 years old, one is a great natural welterweight who has moved up, the other is a solid natural middleweight. I can see why the fight could appeal to Cotto's team - Geale's chin is average and he lacks a knockout punch, but on the other hand, he is clearly the bigger man, has good handspeed, good boxing skills and generally throws a lot of punches. I think a close decision is probably the best bet and if it's close then it will more likely go to Cotto, but a Geale win wouldn't shock me.

HBO won't approve Geale as a GGG opponent again.

By beating Cotto Geal will become a name, much bigger then he ever was. HBO would beg him to fight GGG.

Oh you believe everything Bob Arum says

Although fwiw & tbf I don't think its NOT about that or that it coulda played a part. When you got two sides that are more even, which is a situation Saul isn't used to, things need to be worked with regards to both sides more. Saul's either been the A side & people are either willing or not willing to accept his terms or he's accepting Floyd's term to go after the number one spot.

This fight is the first fight where things were even-ish as far as negotiating strength. If you go in like all the times who've been the A side then yea that mighta had something to do with us not seeing this fight yet. Personally I believe if Saul had been open to fighting Miguel in NY on June 6 we'd be looking at this fight in a couple months, but Oscar & Saul were seemingly far to focused on hijacking Floyd's Cinco De Mayo date over all else.
I would have to think Cotto would be the A side if anyone was in the negotiations, but even split is believable too. Canelo had a set date in mind, and pulled out of the negotiations. Cotto was taking longer than Canelo wanted, but even Canelo's trainer said it wasn't an issue of Cotto being scared or anything like that. You can't blame Cotto for taking his time on a fight of that magnitude, or wanting to wait to see if Floyd/Pac fell through. I think a lot of the frustration Canelo felt was that he was not in control.

Yea its arguable Miguel is the A side. Mainly I just feel like these are two guys with rising power in Saul & lowering power in Miguel that are near the same region in power right now. I don't think Oscar & Saul respected that reality & I wouldn't be surprised if that did show in how it was all being discussed which is gonna be a problem. Its an extreme example, but if Marcos Maidana woulda been sending contracts about how things were going to go down to Floyd he might not be living the lifestyles of the rich & famous right now lol.

lol.
Beating a past his best welterweight is not going to make Geale a star.
Nice try though.
If he beats Cotto he will still be the guy who quit on GGG before completing three rounds.
Beating Cotto might get him more HBO fights but GGG will not be one of the possibilities.

Not when HBO refuses to approve Geale as an opponent.
They might be able to take it to another network but GGG/Geale 2 won't happen on the HBO bankroll.

That's all assuming that Geale first defeats Cotto which is not a foregone conclusion.

I guess I won't complain, since it looks like Geale is still ranked in the top ten by most at middleweight. I hope it is Cotto seeing how he fares against a true middleweight, and doesn't try to weight drain him at a catch weight like I am sure Roach will push for.

You're very naive if you think Geale hasnt a chance on in this one. Styles Diddy. Geale has a busy style to beat Cotto. Have a stuidy of their last few fights and then see who is making a ridiculous statement - get bent !! I see the fight isnt named in the schedule. Wouldnt surprise me if Cotto has ducked this challenge after having serious second thoughts..

I'm not bias here even though I'm Australian (Cotto is actually my favourite fighter anyways) but I think geale could handle Miguel pretty easily. Cotto isn't a middleweight, simple. Geale isn't exactly the biggest 160 pounder either. But he'll be the bigger man

Geale is a decent opponent, I hope Cotto doesn't have one eye on his potential future paydays and overlooks Geale as that may be a fatal error.
Geale has a pretty awkward style that can be difficult to deal with (unless you're GGG), he also puts in a good workrate and will have a weight, height and reach advantage.
I don't doubt that Cotto has what it takes to beat Geale, but it is far from a foregone conclusion.
