Sky Box Office (PPV): Frankie Gavin vs Kell Brook

Post by Ricky_ »

http://www1.skysports.com/boxing/news/1 ... box-office

This packed bill is set to offer tremendous value for money on top of any sports subscription you might already be paying including:

-

Frankie Gavin vs Kell Brook (IBF Welterweight championship)
A true British bust-up, the fight the fans have been calling for to determine the Welterweight Champion of the World! With the other 3 belts being contested on May 2nd in Pacquiao vs Mayweather, who will hold the final piece of the puzzle and put themselves in line for a mega-unification bout, Brook or Gavin?

Kevin Mitchell vs Jorge Linares (WBC lightweight championship)
Mitchell has tried and failed in previous world title attempts, finding himself outclassed and knocked out. But has found some better form recently and Linares is perceived to be a weak champion with 3 TKO losses already on his record. This is Linares' first defence since winning the vacant title, can Mitchell do the business against this p4p rated opponent? - Open your wallet to find out.

Lee Selby vs Evgeny Gradovich (IBF featherweight championship)
Interesting little fight this one, 1-loss Selby gets his shot at champion Gradovich with both guys hovering aroudn the top 10 in the Featehrweight rankings.

But perhaps the biggest draw of the bill is superstar Anthony Joshua, the greatest heavyweight sensation since Tyson (Mike or Fury) faces a heavy bag he brought along from the gym....

Anthony Joshua vs Kevin Johnson.
Kevin Johnson is bound to be Joshua's toughest test yet, well, he would be, if he knew how to throw more than 2 punches a round, never-the-less, he is a human-boulder, can Joshua KNOCK-OUT a human-boulder!? I can't wait to find out!

The price is yet to be announced but this stacked card would offer tremendous value even priced at £40, because that's £10 per blockbuster fight.
May 30 is set to be the biggest night of boxing in May, not just in Britain, but on the global scene when you consider how thin the May 2 Vegas card is likely to be.
Prepare for 7 enjoyable weeks of blockbuster build-up from Sky, Smith, Nelson & the Team from the channel & promotional company that gives boxing fans what they want.

Jesus H Christ!! Talk about boxing killing itself. Boxing needs more exposure not less tucked away on PPV. This is never worthy of PPV. Is this SKY's way of trying to recoup money to pay for the new football deal? Whether it is or it isnt, this type of PPV is not good for the fans or the sport.

I dont know if this is a PPV card.

I think you can sometimes forget how much you already pay for SkySports, I really believe that PPV should be reserved for special nights of boxing.

Dont get me wrong this is a very good card, as I think Mitchell's fight and Selby's fight could be belters but I am not convinced it should be on top of what Sky already charge.

I guess the answer will come when they release the price of it.

Incredible decision, I'm finding it more amusing than anything else as it's just so ridiculous.

It's so obvious now that Gavin vs Brook was hastily put together just so Matchroom/Sky can try to justify charging PPV for another 'stacked card'.

Added to the fact that Sky are putting up their prices across the board in the next couple of months anyway, I think people should look very carefully as to whether they're getting value for money. I'm certainly not and will be cancelling as soon as my current deal comes to an end.

Disgraceful. I hope the PPV falls on its arse, Sky are pillaging folk to subsidise their English Football contract. A fool and his money are easily parted.

Eddie Hearn said we are looking at the cream of the division either Marquez or Thurman. Then got Frankie Gavin & charged us £18 for the privalege!

It's a total joke, especially when you consider Al Haymon is actually paying TV stations for airtime to show events free to air. Not long until the only boxing on SKY Sports is Prizefighter, Sauerland shows and B level Matchroom fighters being sent abraod to be bashed up for life changing money. The card on the 30th May, if broken down, would have provided 3 or 4 great nights of fight action on SKY Sports. Yet again nothing but greed at the expense of boxing fans from SKY and Eddie.

Eddie has taken top fighters away from the other promoters, and now he's taken them away from SKY Sports subscribers. With Quigg Vs. Frampton and Khan Vs. Brook still real possibilities before the end of the year, and both events needing "stacked undercards", the future of boxing on SKY Sports looks very bleak.

I cancelled Sky Sports in December. Had no regrets. Now I just watch the fights the next day on youtube instead. I have to say that he is taking the royal piss now though. Served up utter fcking shite all year, real trash and then the first semi interesting fight card he slaps on PPV.

However for me it is not actually enough of a card to tempt me to watch it live even if I still had Sky Sports. If I had a date lined up or the kids round (which means they want to watch a film or do something together) I would not really be fussed at all that I could not see it live.

PPV for a card that I probably would only be 50-50 about seeing if it was free to air.

It's a bit much, so potentially this summer we could have this card as PPV, quigg v frampton if they do a deal, mayweather v manny.

All at least 15quid on top of the sky prices. Glad I cancelled years ago

If this was a Saturday Fight Night, you would really look forward to it. As it is a good card, lets not forget that but it just isnt a PPV card.

I am starting to think Adam Smith is doing a horrible job as head of boxing. He should be growing the sport and making it as big as possible, however by putting events on Box Office, you are just making it exclusive to the die hard fans.

It feels like Matchroom have grown the sport to this level, and dont want to take it further as they know them and Sky can just cash in by fleecing fans with average PPV's.

I've just looked at Hearns face book link to this, I've never seen so much abuse, it's understandable to an extent however there have been a lot worse PPV,s in the past. I can't see it being a great success as none of the fighters really have the cross over appeal of say a Hatton or Naz.

See I wonder who the PPV's are marketed towards? You generally get the impression PPV's are aimed more towards the mainstream. Once a guy like Tyson reaches his kind of fame levels, the average joe on the street would pay to watch but they couldn't name you 1 other champion from 1 other division.

In the case of Kell Brook vs Frankie Gavin, the mainstream football fans types probably haven't heard of either of them.

As for the "die hard" fans as you put it, you think that wouldn't be a big enough pool to make PPV worthwhile, and, they are the fans most insulted by putting this garbage on PPV on in the first place.

Seems to me like there are no winners in any demographic and it's just plain old bad business all round.

When time are they looking to start this card? I'm guessing they'll have to give each of the 3 'world' title fights a 1 hour slot with Brook taking the top billing. Realistically, nobody wants a main event kicking off at 11pm so it's going to be needing 8pm, 9pm, 10pm slots. Not much time really to squeeze anyone else on the undercard.

It's not Adam Smith's decision to put this on PPV, that's Barney Francis who won't up the boxing budget and gives more and more to football.
Mitchell v Linares is the best fight on the bill. I think Linares smashes him up.

Frank fun time against a man who is a world champion but still could not fill a ten thousand stadium in his back garden as the headline act as the main event is a joke.

greed is an awful thing and sky and matchroom can go fornicate themselves now and I hope this flops with ten pull outs and injuries

Corporate greed has ruined the world and this sh it ruins boxing
