Hagler vs Hearns: 30 Years Later and The Fight Still Marvelous!
On April 15, 1985 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, NV, The Fight between the World Middleweight Champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler and the WBC World Super Welterweight Champion Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns became a legendary scrap of our times. There has been never been another fight like it, and probably there would never be.
These great two champions tear on each other from a deep hatred and dislike of one another. They were supposed to fight in 1982, but it was cancelled by a Hearns' injury.
But on that night, whoever watched live, the fight was highlighted perhaps as the best first round of all time. It was the best first 3 rounds ever according to the boxing experts.
Hagler suffered a big gash in the middle of his forehead and the fight was stopped for the ring doctor to examine it. It was a product of one of The Hitman's lethal right hand. Sensing the fear that his title was going to be taken out by a cut, Hagler attacked Hearns with a tremendous fury, with no fear of being stopped by one of the greatest KO artists of all time.
Hagler full of blood, stopped Hearns in 3. It was the greatest win of his career ajd established him as an all time great fighter and of the greatest top 3 middleweights ever.
Hearns was SENSATIONAL, but Marvin was MARVELOUS!

Comparable to Dempsey-Firpo.... if the that fight was the greatest fight first half of the 20th century... then Hagler-Hearns may very well of been the greatest fight last half of the century...

Tremendous fight still go back to it on a regular basis!

I think that history should rank Hagler higher than he usually is ranked. As far as I know, Marvin was only knocked down once during his entire career, and that was probably a slip. He was a real tough guy.

Its sad that Hagler like esau of the bible sold his legacy for a bowl of soup. The fix he performed in the Leonard fight was pathetic.Hagler pitty patted his punches whenever Leonard could be hit after his long runs around the ring.Hagler was always resentfull that he never got the really big money. He dominated his division and the only marketable matches were welterweights and junior middleweights. He took the money and ran and hid from shame in Italy to become the David Hasslehoff of Italy.A fourth rate actor in Italy.I think Hagler is self loathing since. He had a good name and reputation,a legacy and he chucked it for a big payday.Leonard a fourth rate Ali Clone whole career was based on fixes. The early Stoppages of Benitez and Ayub Kylule and Hearns, the outright screwing of hearns in the second fight, the badly fixed no mas fight, the slightly better fixed uno mas fight. The crowinng fix is the Hagler fix which deceives the ignorant fight fans into calling Leonard an alltime great or legend.Leonard was only good at running away possed no punching or boxing skills.Note to ignorant boxing fans running is not skill its running.Skillfull fighters like Hagler Duran and even hearns can slip punches and feight.Leonard just ran.Running should not score points no more than clinching would on a judges scorecard. The whole Ray lenord the master of pysch jobs and strategy master is laughable.Again another feeble attempt to somehow ride Alis coat tails.Duran was not tormented by Leonard acting like a pompous ass in the no mas fight.Duran was supposed to lay down got pissed at Leonard overdoing his role and said No mas Ill quit instead of laying down.Leonards numerous stories of how he knew he could come back and beat Hagler.Story one he saw how diminished hagler looked against Mugabi, story two he watched how duran fought Hagler and used that strategy of lead right hands.Three he figured it out himself.I know like aAli Liston one of these fixes will come out in an FBI report someday in the next 10-15 years.

How Marvelous took those wicked shots from the Hitman was something to behold. Hearns lost the two biggest bouts of his career. That put him out of the top 50 greats pound per pound in my view. Hagler to me, is a top 30 atg and of course, a top 3 great middleweight behind the greats Carlos Monzon and Sugar Ray Robinson.

And the fact that they were both on American talk shows slating one another, only added fuel to the fire. It was the perfect to nearly an unparallelled bout.elmersalsa wrote:On April 15, 1985 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, NV, The Fight between the World Middleweight Champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler and the WBC World Super Welterweight Champion Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns became a legendary scrap of our times. I recall Hagler saying he liked to call Hearns Bug Eyes

I can see that it must have been amazing at the time but knowing now that tommy broke his right hand on marvin when he hit him with his money punch takes something away from it for me.
Still, great performance by marvin.

The great thing about them both (as I understand it) was that they both thought they were feared of each other...
Hagler though Hearns was running from him, and Hearns really thought that Hagler was afraid to face him. It meant that they both had supreme confidence in themselves and were convinced not only that they were going to be victorious - but that they were stronger and more powerful than the other.
And it led to "THE WAR!"
Most entertaining fight of all time.

Hagler taking that big right phweee! Man that was some shot to take, I wonder if there has been another punch taken so well in all of boxing? most would have been proper KTFO with that punch but it just kinda stunned him for a second or so! Then Hagler was back on him! Great chin.

is it true that hearns plan was to box hagler and to try and outmanoeuvre him,but the plan changed when he had a massage on the morning of the fight and his legs were weakened, hence he came out blazing, figuring he only had about 5 rounds in left in him

Even if the great Thomas Hearns legs were strong that night, he was on the verge eventually of being stopped. The great Marvin Hagler was not going to be denied. He took all of the Hitman's right hands and kept coming. Marvin was Marvelous that night.
He applied the pressure. That was THE ONLY WAY TO BEAT HEARNS.....THE ONLY WAY!
