Derry Matthews(Spoiler)

Post by Coco »

I see he had a win tonight for the interim title, had a quick look through his record and it makes good reading, 12 years as a pro 49 fights, 8 different belts to his name, 20 fights slated for 10 rounds or more, fought everyone domestically, he has a lot to be proud of.
Hopefully he can go on and earn some retirement money on the bigger stage now with his new title.
I thought perhaps he would fade away after his bad night against Choi all those years ago, how wrong I was!

Yeah he was lucky tonight. He didn't win that fight. I do like the guy though. He would literally fight anyone!

Contraversial result or not Derry is a proper fighter and a credit to the sport in this country.

In the arena I thought Derry had won by 2 , just watched it back then and still think he won a lot cleaner work , Luis done well tho good fighter hope to see him get a few big fights himself of the back of that performance

Was at the fight and can honestly say i've never seen the arena as empty as that before, couldn't have been more than 1500-2000 people.

Unfortunate for derry that l'pool were in the semi final the following day plus aintree the week before.

Thought derry just did enough.

Thought Luis won by a few rounds,Mathews started well and was landing the better punches throughout but his willingness to sit on the ropes for periods allowed Tony to come back into it,even if his work wasn't always clean

I had Luis winning by a few. If it was other way round the commentators would have been cheering on the workrate and constant pressure fighting of Luis. For me he just did more than Derry to win the fight, Derry did ok on the back foot, but nothing better than ok, at times I felt he was doing well just to survive and hang in there as it was a constant onslaught from Luis.

Not surprised the attendance was low as it looked a pretty poor bill on paper. It ended up being a lot more entertaining than I expected.

I had Tony Luis winning the fight by a couple of points. Derry just didn't do enough for me. I can't knock Mathews though, good fighter and have enjoyed watching him over the years. If the fight had been in Canada, I think Luis would've got the decision comfortably, but we all know that by now.

I've not much interest in watching Crolla v Mathews again to be honest.

Derry just nicked it for me by 1, this result will split opinion as most of the rounds very close. Wasn't a robbery tho. Derry Matthews is a credit to the sport, Liverpool and England. A proper fighter, I just hope he's made enough money from boxing to live the life he deserves. Maybe 2-3 more fights then call it a day I hope.

I thought Derry did enough to win.

Was great to see the mutual respect shown away from the ring on IFL afterwards.

I didn't watch the fight so cant comment on the result.

Good luck to the lad, but somebody ranked number 7 in the UK should not be walking around calling themselves a world champion.

World Titles are for the top, top boxers - Derry might be a good bloke who works hard etc. etc. but that is not the criteria to call yourself a World Champion.

Good fight :box: . I scored it dead level, but it was a fair decision that reflected a close fight.

I think Derry could have won more convincingly had he used his excellent jab more, but maybe Luis prevented him for doing that.

Let's hope it's a bigger crowd for Matthews' next fight.

Wonder if Eddie will let crolla fight Derry on a fwank show, Derry has the belt so it would have to work that way. That would draw a bigger crowd. They could even match Liam smith against a totally inept import again because that works so well.

Matthews Crolla 3 and L.Smith Carson Jones would be decent in L'pool on BN.
