Veloso, a 30-year-old single mother of two young boys, claims she was duped into smuggling the drugs.

She said the 2.6 kilogrammes (5.7 pounds) of heroin found in her possession at Yogyakarta airport five years ago was sown into the lining of her suitcase without her knowledge.

There was a Soldier in my unit when I was in the Army that went to his cousins house and was asked to drive his cousins car over to a house across town, his cousin drove one car and he drove the other but the car he was driving had drugs in the back of which he later claimed he did not know about.

My guess is that he more than likely knew since he knew what kind of person his cousin was and that the house they were going to was a shady place to begin with, I have a hard time believing she didn't know what kind of people she was dealing with when that happened.

Filipina maid Mary Jane Veloso was saved from the firing squad in Indonesia at the eleventh hour after her alleged human trafficker surrendered on the day of her execution.

Veloso, who was escaping a desperately poor life in the Philippines, was arrested in 2010 in Yogyakarta with 2.6 kilograms of heroin in the lining of her suitcase.

The mother of two has always maintained her innocence and insisted she was duped into smuggling the drugs by an acquaintance who had bought her new clothes and the suitcase.

She had been told there was a job for her as a domestic helper in Indonesia.

The dramatic intervention came after Veloso's recruiter, Maria Kristina Sergio, reportedly surrendered to authorities in the Philippines on April 28, the day Veloso was due to be executed.

News website Rappler reported the National Bureau of Investigation had earlier filed illegal recruitment and human trafficking charges against Sergio and two others in connection with Veloso's case.

In early 2010, Agus said Mary Jane was offered another job as a domestic helper in Kuala Lumpur by a godsister identified only as Christine or Cristina. But when she arrived in Kuala Lumpur, the job was no longer available.

Christine then asked Mary Jane to go to Yogyakarta in Indonesia instead. Agus said Christine gave Mary Jane a brand new suitcase to use plus $500. Mary Jane told her lawyers the suitcase seemed heavy but was empty.

On April 25, 2010, she arrived at Yogyakarta's Adisucipto airport via an AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur. When the suitcase passed through the X-ray scanner, it set off the alarm. Indonesian authorities then found packs of heroin wrapped in aluminium foil weighing a total of 2.6 kilograms hidden inside the lining of the suitcase. They later estimated the drugs to have a street value of $500,000.

I agree that she does not have to die for smuggling, you don't give life imprisonment for stealing a candybar, it's a good thing he's doing but honestly he may not have much influence in the outcome and it is a distraction for him at this moment.

So my buddy calls me and says "hey man, i know that you are going on a trip but can i just have your suitcase for a few hours? I need it for...ummm...i have to carry something". Bear in mind that some of these countries are under extreme pressure to exact the harshest penalties to prevent smuggling in order to facilitate the so called war on drugs, by other nations.

I'm sure she is guilty, but in countries where people are this poor, people are willing to take the risks, often the smugglers themselves will set the mules up, so that bigger shipments can get through.

It's a sad world.

You nailed it there. It's almost worth the risk for these people. In Indonesia right now the big thing is surrogate babies. They pay these young girls roughly $6k American dollars to carry and deliver babies for Westerners who end up paying a third of the price they would locally. These woman normally work as maids for twenty five cents a day so it's a no brainer for them. It's a multi billion dollar industry right now exploiting these poor women who get kicked out of the shelter an hour after they deliver the baby. It's definitely a sad world my friend.
