what fight would be bigger
what fight would be bigger
Other than this weeks fight what other fight in the history of boxing would of been bigger in the present day? Just off the top of my head Leonard vs hearns 1 gets my shout and ali vs frazier 1
Re: what fight would be bigger
Rumble in the jungle surely imagine prime ali on Twitter !!!
Re: what fight would be bigger
Tyson vs Lewis would have been bigger.
It might have happened faster when they were more evenly balanced too.
But then again, can you imagine Don King on twitter?

Duran vs Leonard 1 & 2 would have been huge, same with Leonard Hearns 1.
Imagining the press it recieved back then, and the further exposure it would receive today, Ali vs Frazier 1 would have surely been the biggest promotion in history?

Re: what fight would be bigger
The battle of the Z men - Zarate v Zamora would have got some hype.
Sanchez v Gomez would have been given the full 24/7 treatment.
Tyson v Berbick would have had a lot more hype around it.

Leonard vs Hagler. If you are talking potential fight - Foreman vs Tyson when Foreman was champ would have been the biggest fight of all time.

For me, this. A lot of other people that would agree are dead now.Impractical Poster wrote:Louis/Schmeling
Pacman and Mayweather et al have been leading us a merry, tired dance for years, but this was a black American going up against a German backed by Hitler on the eve of a big war. It was a big deal. Also I'd say Ali's regaining of the title or a couple of his Frazier fights were "bigger".... This weekend's fight is just richer, that's all.
Re: what fight would be bigger
Tbh this fight would of made more money 4/5 years ago,its only the money that ther makin that makes it big, james toney vs roy jones jnr back in 93 was bigger than this,SOMEBODYS "0" MUST GO

Re: what fight would be bigger
It's biggest in the sense of inflation, but in terms of truly penetrating the public consciousness it's not bigger than the Tyson fights of the 90s. The Tyson/Holyfield PPVs were enormous, as was Tyson/Lewis.
I still remember on the morning of Lewis/Tyson strolling over to the bus stop of my small northern village and hearing two elderly ladies discussing the fight. I'm not kidding. It seemed like the world was talking about that fight. Mayweather and Pacman on the other hand are two people that, in all honesty, the general public are ignorant of. I would expect the majority of people who watch the fight on Saturday night will have never seen either man box, and think Shane Mosley is an F1 president.

Re: what fight would be bigger
Loads were bigger. As mentioned already in this thread, any of Ali's big fights, any of Tyson's fights from Berbick until Lewis ( yep, Floyd calls himself 'money' but Tyson, in his prime, today? Would earn 3 times what Floyd pulls in for a fight...different level entirely )
Floyd is the most famous boxer on the planet. In their pomp, Tyson and Ali were among the most famous MEN on the planet. Floyd's whole persona is very much driven by the fame obsessed, materialistic society that we live in today. He actually lacks personality from what I have seen, hence the whole 'look at me, I am rich' charade. The man is tedious when he speaks etc. His style in the ring, whilst appreciated massively by the likes of us, boxing fans, is hardly the sort of style that attracts the casual. Ali and Tyson by comparison had a much better story, had far more about them as people and of course, they both had styles that appeal to the wider audience ( Tyson especially )
Floyd is lucky there isn't many big name fighters around right now. He has manipulated himself into a standing he would not have been close to had it been any other era.

Have you ever seen his fans? Myself and Riddick Blowe were in a casino to watch one of his fights and his supporters looked like a convention of pimps. Mayweather's persona appeals to a certain type of person, and they are certainly not equipped to discuss boxing (or much of anything).lillywhite14 wrote:Floyd's whole persona is very much driven by the fame obsessed, materialistic society that we live in today. You can't really measure the "biggest" fight by looking at pay cheques. I mean some shitty donkey playing in the English Championship will probably earn more in a year than Pele earned in his whole career. Inflation and in particular inflation in sport has been crazy the last 30 years due to PPV etc
Donald Sterling bought the Clippers basketball team for $12m in 1981 and sold it last year for $2b...
Maradona cost £6m in 1985/6.... a player of his calibre would be 15 times that today
Tysons $10m pay cheque for his 91 seconds against Spinks (that his mother in law allegedly took) would be worth at least 10 times that today. As for the $5m Ali and Foreman each got in 1974.... probably worth $200m in today's sports world.
Last example... 18m people in the UK watched Benn v Eubank 2... simply mind boggling.

This is a huge fight, but I think promotion and marketing has come a long way in the last few years which is making it so big and lucrative. For me ODH v Tito was a bigger fight than this.
