Boxers facing same opponent many times.
Im just watchnig an old fight while im taping some of my archive fights and noticed a boxer called Steve Garber, and ex heavyweight who once fought Lennox Lewis amongst others. But Garber fought a bloke called Mick Cawdon 6 times in his career. Got me thinking. Who else fought the same opponent many times in their career?
Re: Boxers facing same opponent many times.
The great Dick Tiger was pretty much the king of the repeat and all against A-Grade competition.....makes you wince when you look at his record.
4 times with Joey Giardello...who would want to do that?
4 fights with Allan Dean when he was UK based (but not A-Grade)
3 times with Gene Fullmer and they were back-to-back
2 with Jose Torres
2 with Emile Griffith
2 with the decent Pat McAteer
2 fights with Spider Webb
Throw-in fights with Yolande Pompey, Don Fullmer, Nino Benevenuti, Rubin Carter and Bob Foster and that's a collection.

Sugar Ray Robinson boxed Gene Fulmer 4 or 5 times as well as Jake LaMotte 5 or 6 times.

It was 6 times with LaMotta, sometimes giving away nearly 20 lbs.Rexob wrote:Sugar Ray Robinson boxed Gene Fulmer 4 or 5 times as well as Jake LaMotte 5 or 6 times.
Robinson also fought Carl "Bobo" Olson 4 times.
Walcott and Charles had 4 bouts. Kid Gavilan had 3 or 4 with Johnny Bratton. Gavilan had 3 with Ike Williams.

Re: Boxers facing same opponent many times.
Holman Williams and Cocoa Kid faced each other 13 times, Kid taking the series 8-3-2.
Sam Langford went (unless I've miscounted):
7-2-3 v Joe Jeanette
8-2-6 v Sam McVea
2-12-2 v Harry Wills

Re: Boxers facing same opponent many times.
Why no mention of tough Irishman Chicago lt. heavy, JIM BARRY ? He fought Sam Langford 12 times. He also met Jennette, 3x, Sam McVey 3x. In fact just like Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, he boxed almost every top larger black fighter of his era. O'Brien met black fighters 33 times and Barry about 30.
