question about Tito v P. Whitaker

anyone seen this fight? Was there any controversy in the result, was it even close or did Tito wipe the floor with him? Im not that familiar with Pernell's fights but I'm guessing he was pretty much shot by this time? reflexes gone? If he did have anything in the tank though surely a stylist as lauded as 'Sweet Pea' would have won some easy rounds against "Just a left hook guy" (Hopkins quote)??

Am ordering a bunch of Tito dvds off ebay so will find out for myself soon enough but I just wanted to kill 5 mins in work by typing this out. any insight into how the fight went is appreciated!

I think Pernell was a crack addict at the time he was wheeled out for this 1. It wasn't controversal.

From memory, it was a clear points win for Trinidad prior to his superfight with De La Hoya. What became apparent was what a good chin Whitaker had – he took some solid shots from a huge puncher like Tito.
I think Trinidad knocked him down, can't remember?!

It certainly wasn't a controversial decision, it was an easy nights work for Tito who controlled the action throughout. I think Whitaker was put down only once officially but he went to the canvas on other occasions just to get out of the way.

The front cover of Boxing News read: "Tito shows Oscar how it's done".

Pernell was one hell of a fighter, to survive with an absolutely prime Tito at Welterweight, when he was himself well in decline and in poor shape shows just how good he was.

It's such a shame that Whittaker was never really a prime time star. He was every bit as good as Roy Jones, but kind of slipped by most people.

The final scores (118-109, 118-109, 117-110) were a mere formality as everyone in attendance (with the predictable exception of Whitaker himself) witnessed Trinidad’s sheer domination of the fight. In the past, no fighter has ever looked good against Pernell Whitaker -- Felix Trinidad looked VERY good.

I think this is widely recognised as the only fight Pernell REALLY thought he lost without any need for argument on his part...
It was a white wash.....
Shame Pernell was so fucked by then.... stay off the drugs kids

Tito won easily, I think he looked a lot bigger than Whitaker as well. He wasn't shot in the true sense of the word either, as he still managed to hang in there, and wasn't brutalised.
