Floyd
I understand this has been discuss in the Ray Robinson topic. But when comparing him to lets say Ali or any other fighter technically doesnt he have a claim to be TBE. Remember Im only speaking from in-ring I understand he's a scumbag outside the ring but it's not out of realm techinally again that's he is better than Ali? Let's take the outside of the ring stuff a side he has point. Its debatable but its valid right?
Re: Floyd
I font think that Floyd would box on if he had to make the 'rope a dope' a big part of his style, I also don't imagine Floyd having much punch related damage in later life - one of the important aspects of sport is to get out in a condition to count the money you've made - Floyd has (up to now) done this.
Re: Floyd
Floyd hasn't been really hit in his whole career where as Ali has been fooked for years because he took way to much punishment in the ring going off that Floyd for me. HIT AND NOT GET HIT, basic rule of boxing and Floyd has mastered it.
Re: Floyd
I've seen many fights of all the greats and when it comes to technical abilities there aren't many in the same class on most things but there are some who are better at certain things but not necessarily overall skills.
Jones was better than Mayweather offensively but his defense sucked and he lacked the basic fundamentals of it terribly.
Ali may have proven himself to be better offensively on occasions but not consistently.
Pep, Sweet P and Locche may have been better defensively as well but here's where the problem with most of them lies; none of them were able to transition from offense to defense as good as Floyd is and another thing to remember is that Mayweather was often facing smaller and faster fighters than these guys were (they were facing heavier and slower comp---especially the HWs).
Hate the man outside of the ring all you want but in it, there's no denying his technical abilities.

Re: Floyd
Floyd is the greatest boxer that i've ever seen but I don't think that I feel that he's the best boxer of all time. Probably the only time you will ever see me quote Chris Algieri but after his loss to Manny, Max asked him "just how good is this guy?" and he replied "Manny is the best at being Manny". I thought that was the only redeeming thing I could extract from that putrid fight. I thought it was a very cool statement and i think that it more applies to Floyd Mayweather Jr. "Floyd is the best ever at being Floyd". His style is his own and he didn't steal anything from anyone like most boxers do. Most boxers can point to another boxer as their motivation or genesis of their boxing style but Floyd's style "seems" to spawn from his creativity. He's artistic in the ring with more tools than any boxer i've ever seen. All that he possesses in talent pales in comparison to his work ethic. This guy seems to be in training camp 24/7. He just increases intensity close to a fight but he's always in the gym. Was there ever a time in Floyd's career where he looked out of shape in between fights like most boxers? Not once have i seen a picture of him with junk weight on or not completely ripped. That's being a professional and no one gets that these days. Look at all these boxers ballooning 25 pounds overnight after a Friday weigh in. That's unprofessional and a clear indicator of a boxers dedication. Boxers in shape should only balloon 3-6 pounds and most of that is water weight.
I personally think that the greatest of all time is Ali. His hand speed was incredible and his technique before he got old was the definition of boxing to me. But Ali hated the gym and was notorious for his poor work ethic in camp. If Ali had the dedication that Floyd has had since turning Pro, no one would have beaten him.

Jones relied on his great athleticism and never was as technical or skilled boxing wise as Floyd. Floyds ring smarts are second to none.KBB wrote:I've seen many fights of all the greats and when it comes to technical abilities there aren't many in the same class on most things but there are some who are better at certain things but not necessarily overall skills.

My question is in ring those talents you say Ali was great at, but are they better than Floyd in those departmentscaldo2025 wrote:Floyd is the greatest boxer that i've ever seen but I don't think that I feel that he's the best boxer of all time. Re: Floyd
Ali had a better Boxing Personality than Mayweather. Ali was far more entertaining. IMO
As for who was better skill wise does not matter. At some point there is a peak that is reached. Being mentioned in the same breath would be good enough.

Re: Floyd
Floyd’s a great fighter. So was Ali. But when guys are this good you have to look at what they proved in the ring. Ali beat 3 guys when they were in their primes who would make many people’s top 10 for the division all-time. Then you have other wins against guys who could easily be put in the top 20.
I’m not sure Floyd has one single win against someone in their prime who makes the top 10 in his division all-time.
All the evidence is with Ali. A vote fro Floyd is essentially favouritism.

Re: Floyd
Is it Floyd's fault when they all ducked him (Oscar ducked, Mosley ducked) none of them wanted to risk losing to him until they felt they were past their better days and would have a "built-in" excuse.Ezzard wrote:Floyd’s a great fighter. Still beating someone in their prime (Floyd did it to Canelo, Guerrero and Ortiz) is no measure of proof of skills. Ali took tremendous beatings and severe punches that broke his jaw and at the end of the day you have to ask yourself, which boxer would you rather have been?
Would you rather be the one being beaten to a pulp by Foreman or a boxer who has rarely been touched to the point that it makes big news just to say he got rocked?

Re: Floyd
Caldo2025 nailed it for me.
In ring Floyd is the best boxer i have seen with my own eyes. But not the best boxer of all time.
I criticize Floyd a lot on these boards but the guys skill and ring IQ are ridiculously sharp.

Might as well say I'd rather be Bill Gates - have more money and never have been punched at all.KBB wrote:Is it Floyd's fault when they all ducked him (Oscar ducked, Mosley ducked) none of them wanted to risk losing to him until they felt they were past their better days and would have a "built-in" excuse.Ezzard wrote:Floyd’s a great fighter. If beating a prime ATG isn't measure of someone's ability, what is?
Re: Floyd
Strictly speaking of Ali's offense. His hand speed was ridiculous and landed power shots with both hands from the craziest angles. There wasn't a punch he couldn't throw. I'd love to see their offensive statistics matched up because Ali was Far Better offensively. Unfortunately, we all know his defense was cruel to him. That speed, jackhammer jab and devastating power in a heavyweight? It's crazy and once in a lifetime type stuff. No one compares and there's a reason he's "the Greatest".world ranked wrote:My question is in ring those talents you say Ali was great at, but are they better than Floyd in those departmentscaldo2025 wrote:Floyd is the greatest boxer that i've ever seen but I don't think that I feel that he's the best boxer of all time.
