Anyone read or got Wayne Mc Cullough's Biography?

Post by Max Molyneux »

Just finished it yesterday and not a bad read. :TU:

Says he was robbed in Daniel Zaragoza and the first Larios fights ain't seen them so what do you guys think?

Man he could go through wars in the ring though take a beating even off a natural Welterweight like Harrison which he mentions he was in hospital for days after the fight and was not 100% before it but pride wouldn't let anyone call it off.

Says it was a bad stoppage when he was forced to quit in the second Larios fight too so why did they stop it? He thinks he wasn't doing too bad in that one too.

Says he will keep fighting but he''d be good as a trainer from what I've heard teaching two of his sparring partners to box, teaching his wife on usuing the pads and having experiance from Futch, Thell and Roach and being a former champion so he'd have good experiance doing that.

What do you guys reckon?

The first Larios and Zaragoza fights were close, robbed might be a bit much - but there was a case either way. I would recommend you get to watch both contests - very good fights. Personally thought Zaragoza nicked the fight, but Wayne nicked the Larios one.

The Larios stoppage has been discussed on countless threads here - personally, I think Wayne has a point. I thought the fight was beyond him, but some of the rounds in which Larios didn't dominate could have gone to Wayne on work rate. I think there is a case (not a strong one but a case) that Wayne could have taken four of the rounds, including the last two rounds of the fight. With two rounds left - two big Wayne rounds, and there might have been a small case for a draw.

There was also a legitimate case of Wayne scoring a KD in one of his bad rounds (think it was the 7th). It looked okay to me, but wasn't scored. If that would have been scored then I think the small case for a draw, could have been a case for a Wayne win.

What did bug me, is that it looked like Steal and Goodman wanted Wayne out of there ASAP - they were looking at him from the 6th. At that stage, Wayne was definately in the fight and momentum had only just swung to Larios - who had a bad cut. If they would have stopped it in the 8th there would have been less argument from me, cause things were loooking pretty horrible - but then Wayne had a better 9th and 10th (might have even won them) and then the fight was stopped, perhaps Larios was fading.

I wonder if Wayne will fancy his chances more vs Vasquez - tremendous punchers, but when has that bothered Wayne. Can be outboxed/outworked on times.

He reckons that people thought he made Hamed look ordinary too he knew he lost like though.

From what you say it sounds like Wayne's still got it then?

How much more punishment can Wayne soak up, it's not like he's a journeyman who mugs and spoils and avoids getting hurt, he leads with his face every single fight and almost boasts about taking punishment, like it's a smart move.

I fear for Wayne in later life, I really do. Sure it's his life, but I would hate to see him in a wheelchair.

Good read alright, like Max said quite a bit of background stuff in it that people might not have heard before. Wrote it himself too a la Michael Murray but thankfully with out Murray's flowery style.

I plan to buy the book, but I remember that some months back Wayne referred to some "revelations that would surprise people" or "things that few people knew about that would shock them" being in the book.

Any idea what he was on about....?? (I doubt he meant his opinion on disputed decisions or stoppages!)

I brought it from a discount book shop on a recent trip around Lisburn, it was £6.99 i think. I am hoping to start it next week after i finish my Ian Brown Autobiography, the McCullough book seems bang up to date judging by the back cover write up so should be a good read.

I bought it yesterday and got to Page 60 by last night.

My initial take on the book is that it's OK, it's an easy enough read, and Wayne comes across as an all-round good sort of guy. There is clearly no room for self-doubt on his part, judging by some of the descriptions of his amateur career!

Onto the professional career in front of the TV tonight.

I went and seen him at Poole in November. He rocked out some classic Roses songs. The man is pure class. King Monkey!

I am reading this book at the moment, a little bit disappointed so far. Although Wayne always seems a great guy, it's full of the typical arrogance and warped views a fighter usually has of himself. Every time he lost an amateur fight there was an excuse. Every single time. They've also sprinkled in all these comments every few pages such as "Wayne McCullough is the greatest Irish fighter of all time" and so far the whole thing is coming across to me as little more than a self worship session. I suppose this should have been expected considering the confidence in ones self a fighter must have to be successful.

By coincdence I went to bed last night after reading about 3/4 of the book thinking exactly the same! An excuse for everything, the self-styled greatest fighter of whoever/wherever.... I must watch some of the fights again, Morales and Larios 1 in particular!

Few fighters are honest enough about themselves to write a book which is heavily biased towards themselves and the indignities they suffered.

I guess it's true of most of us really, the truth is usually pretty ugly, when it comes to ourselves.

I thouhg George's Foreman's biography was entertaining, he was pretty honest about what a pudendum he was when he was younger, and didn't really trot out any excuses.

Reading Bruno's one at the moment and he comes out as quite honest in it. Especially about his problems.

Yes, I thought that in the extracts I read.

That's next on my boxing bookshelf.

The only bit I can think of was how sick he was against Harrison , that his heart was beating a such a quick speed (he had a virus) that he could have easily had a heart attack in the ring .

He's probably talking about what went on at the Olympics and the amateur scene.

Brown is the worst live act ever my mate was at the belfast gig and said he was so bad people just left and everybody else just booed his arrogant ass off the stage.

I have been pleasantly surprised with Brown's solo stuff (in studio). He is so useless live and I always thought/believed than John Squire carried the Stone Roses. Whilst his solo (Brown) stuff isn't a patch on his work with the Roses, I thought it would be completely naff.

Strange really, both John Squires and Johnny Marr were two great Indie guitar heroes who were a major part of two (IMO) of the greatest UK bands ever, in The Stone Roses (1st album anyway) and The Smiths. Yet both these gifted performers post band years have been a major dissappointment.

thought the Larrios fight was a great battle but for me the Mexican won it and Wayne's claims of bias were just desperate bullshit. He got a rematch though and in the end up he took a pretty bad beating.
I don't see how anybody can think he beat Zaragoza. The word 'schooled' comes to mind.
I have read the McCullough autobiography and found it a decent read. Not too many insights into the often shady business of boxing. It was full of excuses and conspiracy claims though which is rather typical of a boxers bio. No one ever seems to lose a fair fight.
Read the Chris Eubank bio if you get the chance. That was brilliant. Full of examples and stories of Eubank's bizzare behaviour and some amazing admissions about some of his fights and his background. I never liked Eubank as a person when he was a fighter. But I find him to be an extremely interesting individual these days. :TU:

Found the chapter about his struggle to box in Britain was an interesting read.

Ian Brown is a tool. Stone roses are a one album wonder that were totally overrated.

Second Coming is an underated album.... could never understand why it was criticised so much.... still one of the best albums of the last 10 years IMO.
