The things they say: Casual fans

Post by black panther »

Now Mayweather - Pacquiao is almost upon us and the hype is almost at a fever pitch, lots of casuals have approached me regarding my thoughts on the fight and where I'm watching it. There's nothing wrong with casual fans; we were all casuals at one point and I'm happy to educate them regarding our fine sport. But I have heard even more "interesting" comments in the lead up to this one. Today my cousin asked me;

"Mayweather's already beaten Klitschko right?"

Slightly before that he proclaimed "Yeah Mayweather's definitely the best boxer ever; he's knocked out everyone."

Anyone care to share some "casual" boxing humour?

I've found it amusing to listen to casual fans struggle to comprehend the lower weight divisions. A colleague of mine this morning let out a bizarre stream of consciousness when trying to figure it all out, went something like:

"So welterweight...I thought Mayweather was quite small? Isn't he a lightweight then...is there such a weight as lightweight in boxing? How much does welterweight weigh? How much did Naz used to weigh? Heavyweight is the heaviest, yeah? What weight would I be?"

At which point I wandered off in case he started asking about the various title belts, I couldn't face attempting to explain all that before my first coffee.

Great great thread. More will come to me in time, but I remember in 06, 07 arguing in a beer garden with a man convinced that Mike Tyson had lost his final fight to Audley Harrison.

 I have had the pleasure of explaining to someone that a typical 10-9 round doesn't mean that one guy lands 10 punches and the other 9 :box:

You seem to be confusing 'casual fans' with people who don't really know or care about boxing but are decent enough to try and make conversation over something you are interested in.

Absolutely nothing wrong with being a casual fan and mocking a lack of knowledge is not a desirable trait.

Good point. I just humour them. No point blinding them with facts. They won't have a clue what the likes of us are on about.

I thought the opening paragraph of the thread explained all that quite clearly tbh.

These people care enough to want to watch the fight mate. Person who watches boxing but doesn't know a lot about it = casual fan. Lighten up :D

Looking forward to hearing plenty of "Why doesn't he just knock him out?!" type comments come Sunday morning.

It's clearly a good natured thread. The fact our heads are so full of facts about half naked men punching each other marks us out as the real joke.

When Hatton had his comeback fight I, as always had a house full of my mates. Some who like boxing and some who watch boxing because its an excuse to have a drink.

When Hatton was stopped one of my mates said:
"Thats feckin embarrassing, he has trained for weeks and then gets knocked out because of a wee punch to the belly"
After about 15 minutes of arguing and him refusing to accept me telling him that he never knew what he was talking about I decided to prove that he never had a clue so asked him:
"If You thought Hatton won the first round then how would u score it at the end of that round?"

His answer.... "1-0 obviously"

I was in getting my haircut the other day and a guy next to me was adamant that Mayweather 'was far too powerful' and the best fighter in the world! Total wanker! I had my youngest girly with me so never uttered a stutter lol!

Love the casual fans in any sport, i'm no different I have a healthy knowledge of football and im a fairly big fan, but my mates who have season tickets must think some of my opinions are plain stupid lol Everyone gets caught up in the hype and all turn into experts basing their opinions on the few fights they've seen and second hand opinions / info.

The amount of people on facebook posting comments on Carl Frochs and sky's posts (many of who have posted betting slips) saying manny will win in rounds one or two is insane. And its because the last fight they saw him in was against Hatton.

I really enjoy the banter and getting to be the "expert" who all my mates start ringing and texting for my opinion on the fight. It's great for boxing.

It's like the World Cup all over again
