I don't feel responsible for the state of boxing, it's not as if any of us has any clout to alter things for the better. We hoped that there'd be more action last night but we all knew it would no be down to Manny to force it. I think we were swept away with the marketing - that Manny would have the speed and aggression to force Floyd into extended exchanges - he didn't and couldn't but there's nothing any of us could do about that - we believed Freddie Roach and video montages - in a way we were sold a pup.

We knew it was years too late, we knew what result was coming, we knew we were watching a crass exercise in marketing management, and along with it we got a career defining example of why Floyd should change his moniker from money to short change.
There is good reason why Floyd holds such a caveat laden claim to being TBE.

If they want to watch great, if not, so what.
I don't agree. The casual fans are very important to the survival of the sport and it remaining as a major sport.

And that lame fight was a dreadful advert for world class boxing. The clued up Boxrec member may have known it would be a cagey 12 rounder (I have never witnessed an exciting Maywether fight) but the hype would've convinced the casual fan that this fight was going to a barnstormer.

There are going to be a lot of p1ssed off PPV buyers who are not hardcore boxing fans. And especially knowing how much both were paid, will leave a bad taste in the mouth that neither really tried to dominate and there was zero excitement.

I am a bit embarrassed as a boxing fan.

Yes exactly that, which makes me a hypocrite and hence I've expressed frustration. The thread title offered a clue. Sorry, not sure if you have anything constructive to add?

A lot of tension in here today... Shame we didn't see some of the same intensity in Vegas!
Cos of the Sky hype machine had not to subconsciously convince ourselves it's going to be another epic! Sadly reality kicked in - floyd was just to good on the night!

You are an ignorant and blind boxing fan as you put it, if you think Mayweather is bad for the sport. He is a defensive genius who displays the skills of the sweet science impeccably. Last time i checked the aim was to hit and not get hit, not stand there and trade punches just because its more exciting to watch. Its boxing not fighting

I thought Mayweather was flawless last night and actually thought he might end up stopping Pacquiao, defensively he's a genius but I was impressed with his attacking last night,he's never gonna be Golovkin or Kovalev and anybody who was expecting anything different clearly doesn't follow boxing that close

It wasn't the greatest fight in the world...but I still enjoyed it.
I did tell people that it had the ability to be a stinker and although it didn't stink as much as some people are making out, it certainly wasn't a classic.
However, I don't think those who have watched Mayweather recently expected anything different. I thought he put on a great display and he should get credit for his performance, injury or not he made Pacquiao look pretty ordinary.

Truly, what did people expect?

Did people think Floyd would play to Manny's strengths? Of course not. If anyone knows a tadge about boxing they knew exactly Floyd would fight and of course how Manny would too.

The question was whose strengths would prevail ... The emphatic answer was PBF and when the rematch happens in September, the answer will be just as emphatic only this time a possible stoppage as Manny will have to take more risks thus make more mistakes.

BTW ... It's nice to see Boxrec doesn't change.

Brian Moore,

Your thread as ridiculous as it seems has envoked debate or as we used to call them a "ruck" has started .... for the British Forum on Boxrec it has to be a good thing. Life around here has been dull for a while.

So, to liven the place up I will visit my friend at the corner shop to see what he has to say, couldnt get any sense out of him yesterday as he was telling one of his reliable sources rumours about negoitiations Chris Eubank Sr was involved in. Apparently rumour has it whoever he was dealing with could not bear it any longer so went to make another fight instead.

You care about boxing, but you don't give a fcuk about attracting the fans to the sport that would make it better? Seems like a strange position to take. Perhaps 'moronic' would have been a better word, actually.

I'd like to definitively explain this to you -- although whether it'll sink in is open to question.

Casual fans are what would bring big money to the sport and thus create the market for bigger fights, and attract more people into actually boxing, and thus bring us more better boxers. It's as simple as that. Further, if you're offering the kind of product that attracts those fans, and continue to offer it, those fans will continue watching, and de facto stop being casual fans and start being actual fans.

The reverse happened with me: partly, it was moving abroad, and thereby being cutoff from access to the weekend fights on Sky and my friends who liked boxing, but a big part of my drift away from the sport was that the big fights were simply not being made with anything like the consistency required to make boxing a satisfying sport. Prospects were being protected in order to build their names (a legitimate tactic that went far too far), and boxers like Mayweather, Jones, Hopkins, Calzaghe, et al were taking the path of least resistance (for which one cannot blame them, given the risks they take, but they should have been forced into attractive fights to a far greater degree -- I'm looking at you, HBO and Sky). I just got sick and frustrated and drifted away.

For a sporting event hyped like this is, the two best fighters at their peaks.

World cup finals are rarely attacking, goal-laden affairs, and it's true that a big sporting event doesn't have to be exciting to be good. Nor is there any obligation to make it exciting. I think that the point, though, Spud, is that this was two fighters clearly past their peaks, and it showed, with Mayweather relying on Hopkins-like tricks (which are awesome to behold for someone like me, but I'm in a fairly unique subset of even boxing fans) to suck the life out of the fight and pot shot, and Pacquiao clearly slower of hand and foot and shorn of the power of his 2008-2010 vintage.

Now it's true that you might get a Champions League final between two teams managed by reactive, rather than proactive, managers -- say Ancelotti and Mourinho -- that isn't an attacking thriller. But at least you would know that they were the best two teams in Europe of that year.

Further, in the past, there have been plenty of superfights involving men who were past their best (Hagler Leonard, Leonard Hearns, and the Thrillia spring to mind), but this was like Leonard Hearns II without there ever having been a Leonard Hearns I.

On balance, I'd say that Mayweather has been bad for boxing, as Roy Jones was (only worse). He could have been its Michael Jordan, the standard-bearer for a period in which the sport revolutionised its standing and popularity. He had the talent to be. Instead, he is a repugnant personality and has been allowed to match himself far too easily by HBO and, ultimately, we the fans. That has deprived us of probably five superfights. And that's symptomatic of the sport.

I was more than happy that I paid £19.95 or whatever it was for the event.

My limited boxing knowledge gave me a clue what the fight would be like prior to the event and so its no good me bleating the fight was sh*t now.

I do however care about boxing. Whilst we all knew what the main event was going to be like I agree the undercard was poor.

Not me. I said all along it was going to be an absolute stinker. Not just here, but to anyone who discussed the "event" with me. I can see quite a few other forum members felt the same way. I blame the cynical, shameless promoters involved.

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of floyd vs manny, this "reporter" character seems a classless, confrontational sillybilly. I can only assume he doesn't get laid nearly enough to get that frustrated.

Some people take the "state of the sport" far to seriously.

This fight was never a superfight,5 years ago when Pacman was steaming through everyone in his path was the time to have it.People are forgetting the 2 defeats pacman had not so long ago.I must admit i haven't watched all of the first Bradley fight so can't comment, but the ko by Marquez was always going to leave it's mark.If anyone was expecting fireworks then they were watching the wrong fight,it did however make headlines and was a talking point for a while which can only be good and at least there was no issues with dodgy decisions, but yes it was a fight built up by the media, lots of people made lots of money selling this fight as something it isn't and never was going to be,it got the general public talking but i'd be surprised if anyone was impressed by it,especially people who don't appreciate pure defensive boxing skills.I haven't seen the fight yet and can't say i'm in any hurry to either.
