Where does Mayweather sit in the all time list

Post by Batley18 »

There are a lot of people out there who weren't a big fan of the fight, but i could only marvel at the quality of Floyd last night. He made the other big fighter of the generation look absolutely ordinary. Mayweather has beaten a lot of great fighters, but where does he sit in the all time last?

Ray Robinson, Ali, and Leonard Are always mentioned, does he sit in that group? I certainly think he is a top 5 of all time.

Where does everyone else place him?

sadly, after last night, he's not part of the conversation anymore.

At welter alone, I can't imagine anyone saying that he is up there with Leonard. Sucks, because I wanted him to be up there :(

who cares where he is on a atg list. its like saying, where is wlad on a atg heavyweight list. i totaly do not care, even if he was the #1 heavyweight ever.

you know why? because i dont care for boring boxers, if its floyd, ward, wlad, i just dont like watching them, i dont like there style, winning or being high on a p4p list means nothing to me, that when you arent capable of brining some excitemant, some enjoymant.

Somewhere around #20 and I think that's being generous.

Floyd is among the greatest to ever do it. He's proved his superiority to the peers of his era and that's all you can ask from a fighter. People will say you have to be exciting to be considered a all-time great, but that doesn't necessarily reflect on whether they would beat Floyd or not, so that's just peoples opinion.. Who cares, Floyd is great and the best boxer on the planet.

Am I missing something.

He easily beat his so called nemesis in a long awaited & highly anticipated matchup & without breaking sweat & that is a reason to drop his mythical ATG ranking? :-?

Surely it is Pacquiao that is the disappointment, as Mayweather just did what he has done since 1997 & Pacquiao did very little.

I thought he 'could' have put himself in the category of a Leonard last night. I hoped and thought that he'd even knock Pac down for an 8 count and also win decisively. He definitely won (in my view and 90% of others) but it wasn't a dominant performance. It wasn't a showcase bout for Floyd. So, I think his performance dropped him from a comparison with a Leonard.
An ATG boxer closes the show on his biggest night of career. Floyd didn't necessarily need a KO to do that, but needed to land some hard shots and bring the fight to Pac more. Boxing is 'hit and not be hit', and Floyd mastered the 'not be hit' part last night, but not the 'hit' part.

I'd compare that to Leonard's 2nd fight with Duran. Now, that was a beautiful display of boxing on the biggest stage.

Lol, I would say it was pretty impressive for a 38 yr old. SRL was shot at 34. Maybe if Manny quit like Duran half way through you would have been impressed?

Leonard fought like Mayweather Jr for the first seven rounds of the Duran rematch.

I don't want to sound like I'm knocking Leonard; I'm not, but he never hurt Duran once during any of their fights, not even the farcical third fight in 1989, when Duran just turned up a for a late career payday.

In fight 2, SRL was extremely cautious & had Duran not stropped out like menopausal woman, SRL probably would have won a comfortable but unexciting decision, much like Mayweather did last night.

This fight imo hurt Floyds standing he didn't have to stink the joint out as bad as he did.

Its hilarious cuz Floyd has to be hands down the most selfish boxer of all time he truly doesnt give a fuuck about his own fans. Its all about him which hes even mentioned several times.

He put himself into the pro ranks to obviously win but also entertain, he's been horrible at it and the saddest part of it is he doesnt have to be he's skilled enough to win excitingly alotta the times.

This fight was so huge yet such a let down to the whole boxing world. This fight will hurt our sport big time for the next few yrs just wait and see.

Floyd did what he had to in order to win. It would be stupid to take extra chances against a puncher like Pac, when he can simply outbox him like he did. He is as sharp and slick as he is because he smartly avoided all out wars.

Put your blame on Pacquiao, who is supposed to be the second best boxer on the planet, for not have the skill or the will to force Floyd to fight. I personally was hoping Pac would have done that, but it is he that failed to perform and entertain, not Floyd.

I agree to an extent yes pac had no desire or hunger to push it like most believed he would.

But no the blame has to go to both Floyd did not liik good either yes he won but dud it in a horribly dull fashion and just because thats his style dont make it right.

Floyd for me could disappear from boxing forever and trust me when i tell you the boxing world will miss him one bit, same goes for Manny.

Ofcourse the flomos and pactards will disagree

Leonard may not have 'hurt' Duran but put on a boxing clinic... not just eeking out rounds with superior defense and a few jabs. Go back and watch that fight, then this one. If you think the boxers had the same intensity, then we just will have to agree to disagree.

I also definitely blame Pac for the bad fight, but a true great would've just picked it up and stole the show. There's no one (outside of a few hardcore Floyd fans) who are talking today about this dominant performance last night.

There's an old saying "to be the champion, you must beat the champion". NEITHER guy fully went out their to be the champion. Instead both were just trying to do enough to win. That, in simple terms, is why Floyd will not be considered up there next to Leonard, etc.

PS- it's hard to write this, as I wanted to write that he just witnessed greatness, but I will take my lumps and fully admit that we didn't.

One of the best ever, he sits right at the top table with SRL, SRR, whoever you care to mention.

I agree but I'll never re-watch any of his fights. Floyd is great and he's also mind mind numbingly boring to watch. In 50 years time people will still re-watch the original FOTC because it was a fantastic fight. They will not re-watch the snooze fest we all witnessed last night, that is the legacy of Floyd.

Top 40. And don't tell me I'm be revisionist when I say last night didn't affect his legacy too much. I've been saying Pac's been slipping considerably since 2011.

Look, Floyd is a great boxer and has been able to run up an incredible record against thus era. That is undeniable.

But, to be discussed as the best of the best, you need to be able to be a masterful boxer AND be able to finish people. Floyd hasnt had a legit finish in almost 8 years.

I guess Willie Pep sucker in your opinion? No power and defensive genius.
Come on knock outs are great but master class boxing deserves the same respect.

No, I would agree that he's very good..... But not one of the best ever.

Not when there are others that had maybe slightly less defensive skills, but far superior offense. Some fighters could do both.

Most experts have Pep in their top 5. Others in their top 10.

Another that most experts have in their top 20 with no power is Pernell Whitaker.
But according to you they do not belong because of lack of power. Boxing skills are trumped by their master skills. This makes no sense care to explain?

The ability to "finish" people is not a prerequisite of greatness.

If you believe it is, then quantify your claim with five examples?
Just in the Welterweight division

Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, Jose Napoles, and younger Tommy Hearns were all stellar boxers, who also accumulated stoppages.

Ray Leonard is probably the best, somewhat recent example.
He hurt and stopped Benitez, Hearns, Kalule. He was able to finish a much bigger man in Lalonde. Admittedly, he never came close to hurting Hagler, but he was far more offensive in that fight than Floyd normally is.
You can be a great basketball player if you are all offense or an incredible defender, but to be one of the best of all time, (like a Jordan or Bryant or Chamberlain) you've got to do both.

Same with boxing.
