I see myself as a committed boxing fan and because of this will not shell out for the PPV of the Brook card, what's going on with SKY and Hearn is not good for the sport.

It's a more intriguing bill than Saturday's, but I get your point. I'm going anyway. Going with a friend of Brook's and a guy who boxed Gavin, plus a few Josh fans whereas I'll be cheering Selby. I want Mitchell to get beat but the lads will be supporting him. Should be a good night.

If we want to continue with the sport after Saturday night then we must come to terms with a future that will be filled with Floyd Mayweather duplicates. Money has taken the blueprint designed by Roy Jones and elevated his subscription channel, sanctioning body sponsored method of low risk, high reward mega fights to a level that was once, not long ago, impossible.

Every fighter, manager and promoter knows that Greatness is now something that can be constructed - and we're all the worse off for it.

Steady on you facebook wanker. Can you explain to me why "we" need casual fans to be absorbed in the sport? Are you some needy little Cu*t who lacks the self esteem to enjoy a sport without your facebook bumboys showing their approval.

i think you`d be better off on the current scene you prick. My name is cockend.

I don't agree. The casual fans are very important to the survival of the sport and it remaining as a major sport.

And that lame fight was a dreadful advert for world class boxing. The clued up Boxrec member may have known it would be a cagey 12 rounder (I have never witnessed an exciting Maywether fight) but the hype would've convinced the casual fan that this fight was going to a barnstormer.

There are going to be a lot of p1ssed off PPV buyers who are not hardcore boxing fans. And especially knowing how much both were paid, will leave a bad taste in the mouth that neither really tried to dominate and there was zero excitement.

I am a bit embarrassed as a boxing fan.
I've not seen the fight, I thought about purchasing it so that I could watch it at my leisure the following night because of work but a) I had no idea of what time the replays were scheduled for - in hindsight I guess I could have set it to record - and I had little confidence I'd be able to avoid the result for almost 24hours so I could enjoy it........however, I'm happy for Floyd to win as boringly as he likes. Who cares? If I could get a "W" against Manny Pacquiao or Ricky Hatton or ODLH - any of these top guys - and not really get punched, I'd be doing it. He has distinguished himself at every single step of his career - so if he wants to roll away and slip and jab and move all night, I'm happy for him :TU:

What I find interesting is that boxing is characterised as a violent sport, and if you tell some people you're a boxing fan you may as well admit to taking part in fox hunting. Yet it's the casual fan, brought in with the hype that is dissatisfied that the fight wasn't violent enough for their tastes.

Not sure i understand the OP. Most of the boxing fans i know were pretty much unanimous that it wouldn't match the hype. Its mayweather after all. Only one or two of them bought it. I told a few 'casuals' down the pub not to bother.

Not sure boxing fans can be held responsible for the hype around the fight and how much it affects ppv sales.

i think there existed a possibility, that either fighter might end the contest in a similar way to how they both beat Hatton. Mayweather by boxing his lugs off and timing him coming in - or Pacman finding him with a hammer shot straight from a bad place - I don't think it was a "nailed on" Floyd points win - or like some annoying little mug punter on my facebook page "free money".

I think what contributed to Mayweather's longevity is not just his skills, I think he has a lot of pride and professionalism and I reckon behind closed doors and out on the road the man must put in hours and hours of very, very hard work. I've seen open training sessions on youtube, and you can tell that he doesn't take short cuts or cut corners.

Its amazing that we all watch the same fight and see and feel different things; to me Floyd was much better and seemed in his comfort zone, I had imagined the Manny would at the very least cause some discomfort or make Floyd fight hard, he didn't really do that.

Great point. I don't care if people didn't enjoy it, I did and, generally speaking, there's undercards to take care of those who just want to see people get smashed up.
What did you enjoy about an artist stinking the joint out, for a fight that should have happened years ago. A fight which wasn't accessible to the general public, but available at a lofted price to those who coughed on Ppv. I'm just at a loss to understand some of you. It's like the Walking Dead of boxing rationale.

Larry Merchant post fight interview:

Fighthub: Larry, what did you think of Mayweathers performance?
LM: It was a brilliant stinking performance.
Fighthub: Who do you want to see Mayweather fight next?
LM: I dont care, what do i want to watch that again for.

I tend to agree to an extent. There is no doubting Mayweathers talent, he boxed a defensive Masterclass, i was not bored watching the fight (i will get that in there before anyone accuses me of not being a true boxing fan 8) ) but at the same time i thought Mayweather was far to cautious at times and should have engaged more. I dont need to know who would win a fight between the two if it was held in a phone box but i do want to see some proper fighting action, not 12 rounds of manouvaring and occassional pot shoting. To non boxing and casual boxing fans that fight had to be a major let down.

Fair play if your Mum and cousin watched the fight with you. Not sure if you're being funny, but I'll take it at face value. The fight was desperately disappointing though as a mainstream spectacle, whether you appreciate Floyd's artistry or not. And for me, that's such a huge shame when the sport, our sport, captured the attentions of every man and his dog on a bank holiday weekend.

Hi Brian, sorry but could you humour me for a second. In your original post you said "we" have to make a stand and that "we" were shown up or embarrassed (or something along those lines, forgive me if i misquote please). Could you please clarify who "we" are? Im trying to read between the lines a bit here (and maybe reading others views have misled me from your post) but i think you mean "we" as in reporters and the fellows who run boxing?

If thats the case i am well onboard with your thinking. I think the business of boxing gets in the way of the sport of boxing all too often. Its a valid point which is difficult to disagree with.

However, iif you mean "we" as in the boxing community here on boxrec or "true boxing fans" (whatever they are) then how would you expect a punter to change things?

Thanks for your patience.

Hey Jack. Look, there's probably holes in my argument. BUT, the overriding point I'll make is what happened on Saturday was fundamentally detrimental to the longterm well being of Boxing. Most reporters, at least the non-football posse, should have been more forthright beforehand by stating that the fight was likely to disappoint instead of just being pleased to rub shoulders with the A and B listers. Most knew it was going to be dull.

The core boxing fans, which I consider myself to be, should have boycotted the PPV or done more. Would it have made a difference in the grand scheme of things? I doubt it but the fight irritated me as soon at it was announced. We were fed mutton dressed as lamb and the taste was just as bitter when the 'action' got underway.

I have all Mayweathers fights from the first Castillo fight onwards on tape. I knew what I'd be getting with Mayweather but honestly, he could have done more and he had the ability to stop Manny. I also am in somewhat agreement with the OP: for the casual fan, this may be the only boxing they see this year. After that defensive display which most casuals won't really appreciate, they won't have much interest in buying another PPV or subscribing to boxing. That's not good for the sport. And Mayweather does have it in him to be exciting. I thought he was downright destructive against Gatti (really planting his feet and getting purchase on his punches)and the Corley fight was really exciting - he was letting six punch combinations go in that one. However, not all the blame can be with Floyd. Pacquiao, after getting hit clean with some tasty right hands early, was reluctant to fully commit throughout the bout. I haven't seen the punch stats but he threw far less than we're accustomed to from him. Shoulder injury or no, that was not a good performance by him, judging him by the high standards he's set for himself.

Mayweather seems to be getting all the criticism although he done what he always does, it was Pacquiao who was the let down. I am to a certain extent in agreement with the people who say they dont care about the neutrals. I enjoy watching skilled fighters, I enjoy watching Mayweather at his best. I do however understand that neutrals want to see a bloodfest but why should boxing fans apologise for their ignorance. Some of these neutrals are among the same people who go to shows and watch their local fighter smash Latvian push overs and think it was a great night because they seen a few knockdowns, thats more damaging to boxing than upsetting people who stayed up until 5am to complain about a fight when they were probably too drunk to focus on the tv. (Or was that just me)

Would anyone listen to me if I complained about being bored watching the superbowl when I dont understand the game or dont watch any other game of the season? No, they would just tell me that I havent got a clue what im talking about. Just because everyone thinks they know how to punch someone on the face they think they understand boxing.

World cup finals, champions league finals, fa cup finals, olympic 100m Sprint final.... Big events that the real fans miss out on when it comes to tickets. Big events that people feel cheated watching when there are offside goals, dodgy sending offs or drug dopers winning the medals. I dont hear the apologies for these events but I suppose these people paid £20 to watch a fight they have been excited about for 8 weeks and we as boxing fans need to worry about them although we looked forward to the fight for 6 years.

It was a huge event that im glad happened, a huge event that went quite like how I had expected it to and an event that I would get excited about again if there were to be a rematch.

This. Great that they're watching and interested, but they bang on like they know what they're talking about, then whinge when they don't get to see an all out war, it's like turning up to a game of football expecting it to finish 8-6.

I go further and say that chasing casuals is whats wrong with boxing. They are the reason behind idiotic SKY PPV cards, reason of all those a-listers like Chavez, Cotto, Froch, ducking and dodging competition. Its casuals that pay for mismatches like, Garcia v Salka and Leo Santa Cruz v construction worker. What we need is a system that satisfies the real boxing fans not pactards and flomos.

Terry,

His name is Brian Moore. He is a respected boxing Journalist. He and his negativity is likely the exact reason boxing will remain a niche sport. He is also lightsoot. Which means very little to me. But he is clearly correct. Actually he is in some parts, but we all know the fight should have happened 5 years ago, much like Lennox & Tyson, Leonard & Hagler, Tyson & Holyfield....
