[Ambling Alp II]

Here is an update on the Boxrec Hall of Fame:

On November 15,2012, Frankie Genaro,Azumah Nelson,Lew Tendler, and Midget Wolgast were elected.

12 votes were cast; 9 votes were needed for election. Genaro recieved 11 votes, Nelson got 10, and Tendler and wolgast each got 9. We are now up to 124 fighters that have been elected.

Pryor has been a controversial figure on this Forum. There is wide difference of opinion of how good he was. You can vote for him on our next election. We have been doing two a year. The next one is in May. Watch for the thread about it.

This looks at times like a P4P selection process rather than a Hall of Fame process.

I don't care how many votes are cast, but it needs to be based on those qualities
that made a difference. If we look at the history of the two boxers that made
a difference were GEORGE DIXON and JAMES J. CORBETT. Any International type
of boxing hall of fame that does not have these two in can't be a true hall of fame.

As expected, there is an unfair focus on heavyweights and modern boxers which
does not make sense because how many new or interesting new things has anyone
that fought after 1959 added to boxing to make them a standout for hall of fame
consideration.

NOW, of course they are in, but they should have been in a lot earlier.

Re: Aaron Pryor, I might even be persuaded to vote him next time. Not because I believe he gets in for his abilities.....but I can't argue that he was not "famous".

Have I mentioned? I'm not a big Pryor fan? I did? Ok then.

Harry Wills is my nominee. Defeated Sam langford something like 15 out of 18 bouts and was the top contender for the heavyweight crown for 10 years between 1915 through 1925 but didn't get a shot mainly due to Tex Rickard lack of interest in a bi racial bout. Should have fought both Big Jess Willard and jack Dempsey for the heavyweight title.

Wow, it had only been 7 and half years?
I ran it for a while after you left. After several elections and all the really obvious guys were in, there started to be logjams and it started to look like no one would get the 75% needed. To combat that, we established rules that for every other election, a voter had to vote for 25 fighters, and they had to vote for someone who had received at least 2 votes in the previous election.

This worked fairly well for quite a while. Finally, it started to get stale. The interest started to wane and there no longer would be very much debate about who should get in, and little discussion following an election. I finally decided that it wasn't worth the trouble anymore.

It did work well though. We had 20 elections and over 100 fighters were elected. I think we did a much better job than the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Obviously everyone has certain fighters that they thought should have made it that didn't; but there isn't much debate that those who did make it are worthy.

If you look through who did make it, you can see that there wasn't much bias. The different weight classes, eras, and parts of the world are fairly represented.

It was a lot of fun.

interesting hof, however, doesn't anyone think that some of the old timers really don't
belong there. I mean, isn't there a cutoff date, some going back hundred years. the old timers
couldn't compare to the fighters of the 50s or 60s. why have guys like fitzsimmons in the hof.
you realize what Marciano would do to guys like him. we cant date ourselves by believing
all the hogwash that has to do with fighters who fought over 100 yrs ago. just my opinion.

Pep gets a pass from many for having an horrific accident that left his entire body virtually broken. Nothing wrong with rating Sandy ahead of him, but pep was clearly past his prime.

What ? No Les Darcy ??? come on lads, he was invincible and no fighter in history had achieved so much by age 21 as he did, in fact his last fight he was still just 20 years old. It is time the great Australian was recognised here for his undeniable greatness, he destroyed enough great fighters to be in any boxing hall of fame

Mike Tyson and Floyd Patterson both accomplished more than Darcy in the same amount of time. There are others as well.

I was gunna call BS on Slapsie Maxie being in the Boxrec HOF, then i looked up his record. Worthy of his place, just imagine that carreer. He even fought down here.
I did notice though, and its not a criticism, his KO record over 250 fights was around 6%

Was just thinking about this. It was a lot of fun. If a fighter made it, he was certainly worthy; it is extremely hard to get 75% of the vote.

Actually Terry McGovern did...he had two titles and had knocked out the lightweight champion all before he was 21...he is pretty much the standard bearer!

You had to be retired for 10 years before being eligible. Chavez's last fight was in 2005, which means he was not eligible until 2015. We stopped voting in 2012. I am sure he would have been elected had we continued voting.
