SRR/FMJr Dissected
Floyd claims he's better than Sugar.
Robinson the taller guy with the longer reach. Could fight using a varying array of tactics. Could fight defensively and offensively, and was incredible at both. Floyd.... he's one of the best defensive fighters ever. However, he doesn't have as many tools in his arsenal. Sugar, with his skillset, size, and variety of weapons beats Mayweather.
I don't even think it's fair for Floyd to make such a claim seeing as how inactive he is compared to the likes of Robinson.
I'd like to hear from some of the true connoisseur of the site how they see this taking place. And if Mayweather has a right to make such a statement.

The great original Sugar Ray was faster and hit harder.
The great Pretty Boy Floyd has better defense.
None of the two are masters fighting on the inside.
Sugar Ray had better chin, I believe. Floyd had been rocked, but not consistently.
Both are complete boxers, though.

I could name at least 10 fighters more complete than the great Sugar Ray RobinsonClivePatrickLyons wrote:Sugar Ray Robinson could even KO you when he was moving backwards same has he could if he was moving forward its been said

Re: SRR/FMJr Dissected
Robinson had a tendency at MW to sometimes stand and trade with guys he could easily out box, and no doubt he did this because he had tremendous power, and a very solid chin. At any weight Mayweather is out of his league with SRR. At best Floyd might survive to the final bell by going safety first the entire bout, otherwise Robinson probably stops him some time after the 10th.

SRR is probably the best boxer who ever lived. I had a good friend who used to post on a lot of boxing sites called Joe Rein. He was a fabulous bloke and saw pretty much all the great champions from the 50s onwards and he had no hesitation in saying that SRR was easily the best. Sadly he's no longer with us but I'm sure he'd be happy with my sticking my oar into the debate and bigging up SRR. SRR went something like 128-1-2 before he lost to turpin. He was incredible.

Re: SRR/FMJr Dissected
Are Duran and Pedroza on that list ?

I am not going to leave you guys hanging. To me, the great Sugar Ray Robinson was a great and complete fighter, but not as the most complete you guys want him to be.
Here in my view, these cats were more complete than SRR:
Ezzard Charles
Sugar Ray Leonard
Roberto Duran
Eusebio Pedroza
Salvador Sanchez
Mike McCallum
Marvin Hagler
Eder Jofre
Joe Gans
Ismael Laguna
Miguel "Happy" Lora
l have named you 11. I have not seen the great Charley Burley fight to its entirety. It will not surprise me if he was more complete than the Sugar Man, too. That is 12 boxers that are more complete than he was.
l may find some more.

Re: SRR/FMJr Dissected
What criteria are you using for a complete fighter?
I look at an almost equal balance of offense, defense, speed, power, chin, reflexes, fundamentals...
Using this criteria, it's hard to beat Robinson.

If you look at SRRs fights, you will see that he was not a great inside fighter. He was a rare combination of power and speed, but lacked inside fighting abilities.Impractical Poster wrote:What criteria are you using for a complete fighter?

Can he take a punch? Yes
Can he hit hard enough?Yes
Can he box in the outside? Yes, very well
Did he had unbelievable speed? Yes
Can he fight well inside? He was not that good in that department
Did he had heart and will and determination? Absolutely
Did he had stamina? Yes
Don't get me wrong. He was a superb fighter. But he was not the most complete fighter that I have seen on film

Out of curiosity, why do you think McCallum and Hopkins more complete than SRR?

They were better inside fighters than the original great Sugar Man. But the Sugar Man accomplished more than they ever did.Impractical Poster wrote:Out of curiosity, why do you think McCallum and Hopkins more complete than SRR?

Re: SRR/FMJr Dissected
I understand your reasoning Elmer, but given that in the other aspects you make Robinson is significantly better in most or all, the "complete" thing doesn't feel important.

Re: SRR/FMJr Dissected
Joe Rein, his real name, posted on ESB under the name of John Garfield. A great boxing writer was Rein who used to inhabit Stillman's GymTomasino wrote:cfang wrote:SRR is probably the best boxer who ever lived. along with myself in the 1940s....
Re: SRR/FMJr Dissected
Yes he wrote for a number of publications and in later life wrote for the sweet science. He was a really top guy and if you search for him online you'll see so many comments from people who were very fond of him. He trained at stillman's in the 50s. Saw Marciano train and was chums with Roach and Manny and used to go to the wildcard gym a lot.
I never met him as I'm over here in the UK but we emailed each other a lot for about a decade. He loved his movies and we used to have great chats about films and of course boxing. A gent Mr Rein was. Sadly missed.
